About Aeropress
Overview
AeroPress is a coffee equipment brand best known for its manually operated coffee maker, the AeroPress Coffee Maker, a portable brewing device that uses immersion brewing combined with gentle air pressure to produce coffee quickly. Since its launch in 2005, AeroPress has become one of the most recognizable names in specialty coffee, valued for its simplicity, consistency, durability, and versatility.
Originally created by engineer and inventor Alan Adler, the AeroPress has developed a global following among home brewers, baristas, travelers, campers, and professional coffee competitors.

History
Origins
The AeroPress story began with Alan Adler, an inventor and Stanford engineering lecturer who had previously designed sporting products, including the famous Aerobie flying ring.
Around 2003, Adler became dissatisfied with conventional home coffee makers. He believed they often brewed coffee at temperatures that were too high and for too long, resulting in bitterness. His goal was to create a coffee maker capable of producing a smooth, rich cup in under two minutes.
Over approximately two years, Adler studied coffee extraction, built more than 30 prototypes, and refined the design before introducing the AeroPress at Coffee Fest Seattle in November 2005. 1
Company Evolution
The company behind AeroPress has undergone several changes:
- 1984: Alan Adler founded Superflight, Inc.
- 2005: The company became Aerobie, Inc., reflecting the popularity of its Aerobie products.
- 2005: AeroPress coffee maker officially launched.
- 2021: AeroPress was acquired by Tiny, a Canadian holding company focused on long-term ownership of consumer brands. The acquisition accelerated product development and international expansion. 1
The AeroPress Coffee Maker
The AeroPress is a manual coffee brewer consisting of two plastic cylinders that fit together like a syringe.
Brewing involves:
- Adding coffee grounds.
- Pouring hot water.
- Stirring briefly.
- Allowing a short immersion period.
- Pressing the plunger.
The pressure forces brewed coffee through a paper or metal filter into a cup.
Unlike espresso machines, the AeroPress does not generate true espresso pressure (typically around 9 bars). Instead, it produces a concentrated coffee with a smooth body and low bitterness.
Brewing Method
The AeroPress combines several brewing techniques:
- Immersion brewing
- Pressure-assisted extraction
- Paper or metal filtration
Because users can control nearly every brewing variable, the AeroPress is highly adaptable.
Common variables include:
- Coffee dose
- Water temperature
- Grind size
- Brew time
- Stirring technique
- Press speed
- Filter type
This flexibility has made the AeroPress one of the most experimented-with coffee brewers in the specialty coffee community.
Design Philosophy
Alan Adler designed the AeroPress around several engineering goals:
- Fast brewing
- Reduced bitterness
- Low acidity
- Easy cleaning
- Portability
- Consistent extraction
The brewing process typically takes 1–2 minutes, significantly faster than many immersion methods.

World AeroPress Championship
One of the most distinctive aspects of the brand is the World AeroPress Championship.
Founded in 2008 in Oslo, Norway, the competition celebrates creativity rather than strict adherence to a single brewing recipe.
Competitors receive identical coffee beans but are free to use their own:
- Grind size
- Water recipe
- Brewing method
- Timing
- Technique
The championship has expanded from three competitors in its inaugural event to thousands of participants across more than 170 regional events worldwide, making it one of the largest coffee brewing competitions globally. 1
