History
1994 — Foundation
BergHOFF’s story begins in 1994, when Belgian entrepreneur Raf Vanthoor established a company called Euro-Household.
The original business concentrated on supplying private-label products. Vanthoor soon recognized that this was a highly competitive market, so he decided to create an independent brand of his own.
That brand became BergHOFF.[2]
The company’s early customers were primarily German, and Vanthoor persuaded them to transition from private-label products to the new BergHOFF brand.[2]
1995 — Expansion beyond Western Europe
In 1995, BergHOFF made an important international move by exhibiting at a trade show in Eastern Europe.
The company’s initial range was remarkably small: three cookware sets, two cutlery sets and one knife block. Despite the modest assortment, the exhibition attracted significant interest and resulted in BergHOFF’s first orders from Eastern Europe.[2]
1997 — Building an international distribution network
By 1997, BergHOFF was expanding rapidly into former Eastern Bloc markets, initially including Poland and Ukraine.
The company adopted an interesting distribution strategy: rather than allowing numerous competing distributors in each market, Vanthoor decided to work with one reliable partner per country. The network subsequently expanded throughout Eastern Europe and later into markets including France, Spain and the United States.[2]
2000 — BergHOFF Worldwide
In 2000, the company’s corporate name was changed to BergHOFF Worldwide NV, aligning the company more closely with its consumer brand.
This period marked an important transition from primarily sourcing products toward developing its own products.[2]
2004 — Own product development
By 2004, BergHOFF says it had moved to offering only its own products.
The company also began developing its own boutiques and expanding its international presence.[2]
2008 — Strategic change
A significant change occurred in 2008, when Hilde Rutten took over BergHOFF Belgium.
The Belgian operation changed strategy: instead of concentrating on its own retail stores, it shifted toward a wholesale model, serving multiple market segments and expanding its geographic focus across the Benelux.[2]
2010s onward
BergHOFF continued developing its international distribution network while increasing emphasis on design, innovation and sustainability.
The company’s design operation, BergHOFF Studio, became an important part of its product-development approach, bringing together product designers, creatives and marketing specialists at its Belgian headquarters.[1]
Today, the Belgian business reports 500+ products, 60+ countries, 35+ shop-in-shops and 150+ awards.[2]
What does BergHOFF make?
BergHOFF is primarily a kitchen and cookware brand, rather than simply a cookware manufacturer.
Its portfolio encompasses several categories.
Cookware
This is arguably the brand’s core category.
Products include:
- Frying pans
- Saucepans
- Cooking pots
- Dutch-oven-style cookware
- Stockpots
- Cookware sets
- Specialty cooking vessels
BergHOFF’s philosophy is to combine practical cooking performance with visual design, rather than treating cookware purely as utilitarian equipment.[1]
Knives
BergHOFF also produces kitchen knives and knife collections, including:
- Chef’s knives
- Santoku knives
- Utility knives
- Paring knives
- Knife sets
- Knife blocks
Knives were actually part of the company’s very first product assortment in the 1990s.[2]
Kitchen tools
The portfolio extends to everyday cooking utensils and accessories, such as preparation and serving tools.
The idea is to allow BergHOFF to cover more of the complete cooking experience, rather than selling isolated cookware pieces.[1]
Tableware and serving
BergHOFF also operates in products that bridge the gap between the kitchen and dining table, including cutlery and serving-related products.
Cutlery was another category included in the brand’s original 1995 assortment.[2]
BBQ and outdoor cooking
The broader BergHOFF portfolio also includes BBQ-related equipment and accessories, extending its positioning beyond indoor cooking.
Product philosophy
A useful way to understand BergHOFF is through its combination of three concepts:
Design + functionality + accessibility.
BergHOFF describes itself as wanting to create sustainable, innovative and high-quality products at an affordable price, rather than positioning itself exclusively as a luxury cookware company.[1]
Its products therefore tend to emphasize:
- Contemporary aesthetics
- Ergonomics
- Practical functionality
- Space efficiency
- Material selection
- Ease of everyday use
- Product versatility
- Sustainability
This is an important part of the brand’s identity: BergHOFF wants cookware to look good enough to be part of the kitchen environment while remaining practical for everyday cooking.
BergHOFF’s collections
BergHOFF currently describes three major collections:
Leo
Leo is positioned around approachable, contemporary kitchen products intended for everyday cooking.
It represents much of BergHOFF’s consumer-friendly design philosophy.
Essentials
The Essentials collection focuses on fundamental kitchen products and cooking equipment.
The emphasis is on practical items that form the foundation of a kitchen.
DiNA
DiNA represents another part of BergHOFF’s design-oriented range and contributes to the company’s effort to serve different cooking styles and customer requirements.
BergHOFF describes these three collections as a way of catering to customers ranging from beginners to more experienced cooks and from smaller to broader budgets.[1]
Design
Design is arguably one of the most distinctive aspects of BergHOFF.
The company doesn’t present design simply as decoration. Its stated approach is to integrate aesthetics and functionality into the product-development process.
BergHOFF Studio, located at the company’s Belgian headquarters, brings together creatives, marketers, product designers and graphic designers to develop products and packaging.[1]
The company also says its products have received numerous international design awards; its Belgian operation currently cites 150+ awards.[2]
Some third-party and company materials specifically reference awards such as Red Dot and iF Design recognition.[3]
This gives BergHOFF a somewhat different identity from conventional cookware brands whose main selling points are simply material thickness, cooking performance or professional heritage.
Sustainability
Sustainability has become increasingly prominent in BergHOFF’s current positioning.
The company says its product-development process considers environmental impact from the beginning and uses a 3R strategy—reduce, reuse and recycle—as part of its design thinking.[1]
BergHOFF Belgium currently highlights:
- Recycled stainless steel
- Recycled aluminum
- PFAS-free coatings
- FSC-certified packaging
- More responsible material choices
- Efforts toward climate-neutral operations
BergHOFF Belgium also reports being an EcoVadis Silver-certified company and an SDG Champion, with a stated goal of moving toward climate-neutral operations by 2030.[2]
These claims are best understood as part of the company’s current sustainability strategy, rather than meaning that every historical BergHOFF product uses recycled or PFAS-free materials.
Manufacturing and supply chain
One interesting aspect of BergHOFF’s history is that it developed as an internationally oriented brand rather than a purely Belgian manufacturing company.
From its early years, the company worked with manufacturing partners internationally. Historical accounts describe significant production relationships in China and the development of manufacturing capabilities there.[4]
This is important when interpreting the phrase “Belgian brand.”
BergHOFF’s Belgian identity primarily relates to its origin, company, design and product-development heritage. It should not automatically be interpreted to mean that every BergHOFF product is manufactured in Belgium.
In other words:
Belgian-designed / Belgian-founded does not necessarily mean Belgian-made.
The actual country of manufacture can vary by product and collection, so the product’s packaging or specification sheet is the appropriate source for a particular item’s manufacturing origin.
Global distribution
BergHOFF has pursued an international business model almost from its beginning.
The company says its products are distributed through a worldwide network, and BergHOFF Belgium currently reports a presence in 60+ countries.[1][2]
Rather than relying exclusively on company-owned stores, the brand has historically worked heavily through:
- Distributors
- Retailers
- B2B partners
- Kitchen specialists
- Shop-in-shop concepts
- Private-label projects
This distribution strategy has been an important part of how a relatively small Belgian-origin brand achieved international reach.
BergHOFF Creations
An interesting lesser-known part of the company is BergHOFF Creations.
This is the company’s private-label/custom-product division.
Through BergHOFF Creations, the company works with retailers and other businesses to develop customized cookware and kitchenware, including product specifications, materials, certifications, packaging and branding.[1]
So BergHOFF is not only a consumer-facing brand. It also operates as a product-development and sourcing partner for other businesses.
That capability comes directly from its origins: the company itself began in the private-label business before creating the BergHOFF brand.[2]
Brand positioning
A simplified positioning map would look something like this:
| Segment | Typical positioning |
|---|---|
| Budget cookware | Basic functionality, low price |
| BergHOFF | Design + functionality + accessible pricing |
| Premium cookware | Higher materials, craftsmanship and brand prestige |
| Luxury cookware | Heritage, premium materials, craftsmanship, prestige |
BergHOFF therefore sits in an interesting middle ground.
It generally tries to offer more design and product sophistication than generic mass-market cookware, while remaining more accessible than many premium/luxury cookware brands.
Its own description of this philosophy is essentially affordable quality and design.[1]
What makes BergHOFF distinctive?
Several characteristics differentiate the brand.
Belgian design identity
The brand’s Belgian origin is an important part of its identity and marketing.
Design-led cookware
BergHOFF treats cookware and kitchenware as designed consumer products rather than purely functional hardware.
Broad product ecosystem
Instead of specializing exclusively in one product—such as frying pans or knives—it covers cookware, knives, utensils, tableware and other kitchen categories.
International orientation
The company developed an international distribution network relatively early in its history.
Accessible premium positioning
BergHOFF tries to occupy the space between inexpensive generic cookware and high-priced premium brands.
Sustainability focus
Its current product development increasingly emphasizes recycled materials, PFAS-free coatings and more responsible packaging.[1][2]
BergHOFF vs. other cookware brands
BergHOFF’s identity is somewhat different from brands such as Le Creuset, All-Clad, Zwilling, Tefal or WMF.
It isn’t primarily built around centuries-old cookware heritage, nor is it exclusively a technical cookware specialist.
Instead, its proposition is closer to:
“Well-designed kitchen products for everyday consumers.”
Its breadth is one of its strengths: a customer can theoretically build a fairly complete kitchen ecosystem around the brand.
Its relative weakness, depending on the consumer, is that someone specifically looking for ultra-premium craftsmanship, traditional manufacturing heritage, or professional restaurant cookware may prefer a specialist premium brand.
Ownership and corporate development
The company’s history is closely associated with its founder Raf Vanthoor.
Another important figure is Hilde Rutten, who acquired BergHOFF Belgium in 2008 and subsequently led its development in the Benelux market.[2]
The history therefore isn’t simply that of a cookware label; it is also the story of a Belgian entrepreneurial company that evolved from private-label trading → branded products → international distribution → product design and development → broader kitchen solutions.
BergHOFF today
As of 2026, BergHOFF presents itself as an international kitchen-design brand with:
- 30+ years of experience
- Distribution in 60+ countries
- 500+ products reported by BergHOFF Belgium
- 150+ awards reported by BergHOFF Belgium
- Multiple product collections
- An in-house design operation
- A growing sustainability program
- Both consumer products and private-label/B2B capabilities[1][2]
Its current official description emphasizes sustainable, innovative and high-quality kitchen products at accessible prices, with design and functionality at the center of the proposition.[1]
