History
The history of Colgate began in 1806, when William Colgate established a small business producing starch, soap, and candles on Dutch Street in New York City. The company initially had no connection to oral care and focused mainly on household products.
In 1873, Colgate introduced one of its earliest toothpaste products, sold in glass jars. This marked the company’s entry into the oral care industry. At the time, toothpaste was not commonly packaged for convenience, making it a relatively premium product.
A major innovation came in 1896, when Colgate introduced toothpaste in a collapsible tube, making it easier, cleaner, and more convenient to use. This packaging became the industry standard and helped popularize toothpaste among consumers worldwide.
During the early 20th century, the company expanded internationally. By the 1920s, Colgate had established operations across Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. In 1928, Colgate merged with Palmolive-Peet Company, forming Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Company, which later became Colgate-Palmolive Company in 1953.
Over more than two centuries, Colgate has evolved from a soap manufacturer into one of the world’s leading oral health companies.
