Notably, this product was previously marketed as Desitin Rapid Relief; the brand states it was renamed Daily Defense while retaining the same formulation.[1]

Desitin Maximum Strength Original Zinc Oxide Paste

This product serves as the brand’s heavy-duty diaper rash treatment. It contains 40% zinc oxide, which Desitin describes as the maximum level available without a prescription. The product has a substantially thicker paste consistency than the everyday cream and is specifically positioned for severe, stubborn, or overnight diaper rash.[1]

The 40% zinc oxide formulation gives Maximum Strength its characteristic thick, opaque white appearance and strong barrier properties.

Desitin Multipurpose Ointment

Multipurpose Ointment offers broader application than the dedicated diaper rash products. It is a petrolatum-based skin protectant designed to help protect irritated or chafed skin and provide protection for minor cuts, scrapes, and burns, as well as diaper rash.[1]

Unlike the two principal zinc oxide products, the current U.S. product comparison indicates that Multipurpose Ointment contains no added zinc oxide.[1]

The fundamental concept behind Desitin is barrier protection. Diaper rash can be aggravated when delicate skin is repeatedly exposed to moisture, urine, stool, friction from the diaper, and resulting irritation or inflammation. A barrier cream or paste creates a layer over the skin that helps reduce direct contact between the skin and these irritants.

Desitin recommends applying its diaper rash products liberally after cleaning and drying the diaper area. Educational materials from the brand emphasise keeping the area clean and dry and reducing prolonged exposure to wet or soiled diapers.[1]

Zinc oxide is arguably the defining ingredient of the modern Desitin brand. The current U.S. range illustrates the brand’s product strategy clearly:

This distinguishes Desitin from general-purpose moisturisers or cosmetic baby care brands. Its core identity aligns more closely with an OTC therapeutic skin-protection brand. Communication generally revolves around three key concepts:

1. Prevention: Protecting skin before a rash develops.
2. Treatment: Relieving existing diaper rash irritation.
3. Barrier protection: Keeping moisture and irritants away from vulnerable skin.

For diaper rash, the general Desitin approach follows a specific protocol: clean, dry, apply barrier product, and change diapers frequently. The brand recommends changing wet or soiled diapers promptly, cleaning the diaper area, allowing it to dry, and applying the product liberally.[1]

For the Daily Defense product specifically, Desitin states it can be applied at each diaper change, particularly before periods when prolonged wetness is expected, such as overnight.[1]

Desitin products are intended for external use only. For example, Daily Defense labelling advises avoiding contact with the eyes and discontinuing use if the condition worsens, lasts more than seven days, or clears and returns within a few days. It is also important to distinguish ordinary diaper rash from other causes of redness or irritation. Not every rash is appropriately treated with a barrier cream; persistent, severe, or unusual rashes warrant medical evaluation. A significant historical distinction exists regarding the name. DESITIN Arzneimittel GmbH, based in Hamburg, Germany, is a separate pharmaceutical entity. Its corporate history traces back to companies founded in 1919 in Hamburg and 1922 in Berlin, and it states that its first product, Desitin Ointment, remains available today.[2]

The German company eventually concentrated heavily on central nervous system medicines, particularly treatments relating to epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease.[2] Consequently, the word “Desitin” can refer to two related-looking but distinct contexts:

• Desitin® in the U.S.: Primarily a consumer baby care and diaper rash brand.
• DESITIN Arzneimittel GmbH in Germany: An independent pharmaceutical company with a broader pharmaceutical portfolio.

Desitin’s identity is closely tied to the long-established use of protective ointments for irritated skin.
