History
Founding (1962)
Burt and Diana Cutler founded Educational Insights in 1962. The company originated when the founders developed Learning to Read with Phonics, a resource created to help their daughter build reading skills. This initial product embodied the company’s founding philosophy that children learn most effectively when educational concepts are engaging and interactive. From its inception, Educational Insights focused on producing materials that bridged the gap between traditional schooling and playful exploration.
Growth and Expansion
Over subsequent decades, Educational Insights expanded beyond early literacy into a comprehensive range of educational toys and games. The company developed products covering science exploration, mathematics, language and literacy, problem-solving, engineering concepts, creativity and arts, imaginative play, and social-emotional learning. The brand became known for creating products that encouraged independent exploration rather than rote memorisation.
Acquisition by Learning Resources (2006)
In 2006, Learning Resources, another major educational toy company, acquired Educational Insights. This acquisition allowed Educational Insights to continue operating as a distinct brand while leveraging the resources and distribution network of the larger group. Today, Educational Insights remains part of the Learning Resources family of brands alongside other education-focused product lines.
Brand Philosophy
Educational Insights is built around the concept of learning through play. The company maintains that toys can serve purposes beyond entertainment by helping children develop critical thinking, creativity, fine motor skills, communication abilities, confidence, independence, and scientific curiosity. The brand collaborates with teachers, parents, education specialists, and inventors to design products that connect play experiences with specific developmental goals.
Product Categories
STEM Toys
Educational Insights maintains a strong presence in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning products. Examples include science experiment kits, observation tools, engineering construction toys, coding-related activities, and discovery-based learning products. These items aim to introduce children to scientific thinking through hands-on exploration.
Science & Exploration Products
One of the company’s historically significant product lines is GeoSafari, which introduced children to geography, biology, astronomy, and scientific observation through interactive learning tools.2 GeoSafari products became one of the most recognisable educational technology lines from Educational Insights.
Brain Games and Puzzles
The company produces logic and strategy games designed to strengthen pattern recognition, spatial reasoning, memory, and problem-solving skills. A notable example is Kanoodle, a series of portable puzzle games focused on creative problem-solving.3
Early Learning Toys
For younger children, the brand develops products supporting alphabet recognition, counting, colour and shape identification, fine motor development, and early science concepts. These products are specifically designed for preschool and early elementary learners.
Sensory and Creative Play
Educational Insights also creates sensory and creativity-focused products such as modelling compounds, art activities, open-ended creative toys, and imagination-based play sets. These products are intended to encourage experimentation and self-expression.

Educational Approach
Educational Insights distinguishes itself from many traditional toy companies by designing products around developmental outcomes rather than entertainment alone. The company’s approach emphasises hands-on learning where children interact physically with materials, and self-directed discovery that allows children to experiment and find solutions independently. Academic concepts are integrated naturally into games and activities to facilitate skill-building through play, while successful problem-solving during exploration helps build confidence.
Target Audience
Children
The primary audience comprises preschool through elementary-age learners who benefit from interactive educational play.
Parents
Families seeking toys that combine entertainment with meaningful developmental value.
Teachers and Schools
Educators looking for classroom resources that support curriculum goals and active learning methodologies.
Awards and Reputation
Educational Insights has established a reputation as an award-winning educational toy company. Its products have received recognition from parents, educators, and toy industry organisations for successfully combining learning value with engaging design.1
Market Position
Educational Insights occupies a unique position between traditional toy manufacturers and educational resource companies. Unlike purely academic learning companies, it focuses on making educational concepts enjoyable and accessible. Conversely, unlike conventional toy brands, its products are intentionally designed around child development and learning objectives. The brand competes in the educational toy market alongside companies such as Learning Resources, Melissa & Doug, and other STEM and learning-focused toy makers.
Legacy
After more than six decades in operation, Educational Insights remains recognised as a company that blends education and entertainment. Its core idea—helping children learn through curiosity, experimentation, and play—has remained consistent since its founding in 1962. The brand’s lasting influence stems from treating toys not merely as sources of fun, but as tools that help children develop the confidence and skills necessary for lifelong learning.
