History
Foundation
The business began in 1963 when married couple Handoko Subali and Elizabeth Halim started a home industry in Bandung.[1] Initial capital was reportedly only Rp10,000, used to purchase a sewing machine and a sepeda kumbang, a bicycle commonly used for transport at the time.[1]
Elizabeth Halim utilized her sewing skills to produce the company’s first major product, a travel bag.[2] Rather than relying on conventional retail channels, the founders personally marketed their goods from shop to shop around Bandung. The positive market response encouraged them to expand production, establishing early foundations built on entrepreneurship, self-production, and direct selling.[2]
Early growth and industrialization
As demand grew, Elizabeth expanded its catalogue beyond travel bags to include women’s bags, which eventually became its defining category. In its early years, production did not follow a modern factory model; instead, materials were distributed to independent or semi-independent home-based sewers who returned finished goods. This system allowed the company to scale output despite limited machinery and capital.[2]
Over time, operations became increasingly industrialized. Approximately two decades after its founding, Elizabeth established a dedicated manufacturing facility in Cimahi, West Java.[2]
Origin of the name
The name “Elizabeth” was chosen for its simplicity and memorability, and because it was the name of co-founder Elizabeth Halim.[2] According to the brand’s management, Halim was also fond of the international beauty brand Elizabeth Arden, which further influenced the naming decision.[2] Despite its international resonance, Elizabeth is entirely Indonesian in origin.
Brand development
Elizabeth’s evolution spans several distinct phases:
- 1963: Commencement as a home industry producing travel bags in Bandung.
- 1960s–1970s: Expansion of production capabilities and retail presence alongside growing demand.
- Subsequent decades: Establishment of women’s handbags as the core product category.
- Later expansion: Diversification into a broader fashion lifestyle brand offering shoes, clothing, luggage, wallets, and accessories.
- Digital era: Adoption of omnichannel retail through official online stores and digital commerce platforms alongside physical outlets.[1]
This trajectory marks a significant shift from a specialized bag manufacturer to a comprehensive fashion and lifestyle brand.
Products
Elizabeth’s current portfolio extends well beyond its original travel bags.
Bags
Bags remain central to the brand’s identity. The assortment includes women’s handbags, shoulder bags, sling bags, backpacks, work bags, men’s bags, school bags, travel bags, and luggage.[1] The historical association with women’s handbags continues to define the brand.
Accessories and apparel
The product line has diversified to include:
- Wallets: Small leather goods and fashion accessories.[1]
- Shoes: Women’s footwear, including shoes and sandals.[1]
- Clothing: Women’s fashion items such as blouses and other apparel.[1]
- Watches and eyewear: Timepieces and sunglasses for both men and women.[1]
Brand identity and design philosophy
Elizabeth positions itself around fashionability, practicality, accessibility, and durability. The company emphasizes quality and integrity in design and materials while incorporating contemporary trends.[1] A key characteristic is the balance between classic design elements and evolving fashion trends.
Rather than positioning itself exclusively as a luxury house, Elizabeth focuses on products that are practical, fashionable, relatively affordable, suitable for everyday use, and appealing to multiple generations. This approach has contributed to the brand’s longevity in the Indonesian market. News agency ANTARA has attributed this endurance to the brand’s ability to maintain continuity in product design while adapting to changing times.[3]
The design identity is broadly described as classic, feminine, practical, and trend-aware. Management has stated that the brand observes trends across various segments of the fashion market rather than following only premium labels.[2] Instead of frequent reinvention, Elizabeth maintains a recognizable core while updating silhouettes, colours, materials, hardware, patterns, and seasonal collections.
Target market
Elizabeth primarily serves the mass-market to affordable fashion segment. Its traditional customer base consists largely of Indonesian women seeking handbags that combine everyday functionality with stylish design. However, diversification into men’s bags, luggage, clothing, shoes, eyewear, watches, and school bags has broadened its appeal.[1] Various sub-brands further allow the company to differentiate offerings for specific consumer groups.
Sub-brands
Elizabeth operates several sub-brands to address distinct market segments:
- Emsio by Elizabeth: Targets a specific consumer segment while maintaining the parent company’s focus on accessible fashion.[1]
- Lorica by Elizabeth: Created for a different market demographic within the broader portfolio.[1]
- Pink Kiss by Elizabeth: Addresses another particular consumer segment.[1]
- Delco by Elizabeth: Functions as the men’s-oriented fashion line, offering backpacks, sling bags, clutches, and belts. Its design language combines classic, trendy, and masculine styling.[1]
Retail network and manufacturing
Retail presence
A major competitive advantage for Elizabeth is its extensive physical retail network. The company reports having more than 90 stores throughout Indonesia,[1] with media reports in 2024 citing 98 branches.[2] Historically, the brand grew through brick-and-mortar retail rather than as a digital-first entity. Today, it employs an omnichannel strategy combining physical stores, an official online store, and digital commerce platforms.
Manufacturing
Manufacturing remains integral to the brand’s identity. The production facility in Cimahi, West Java, represents the transition from a home-industry model to a larger manufacturing organization. Reports indicate the factory provides significant employment, including for women workers.[2] Unlike many contemporary fashion labels that rely solely on importing, Elizabeth retains its manufacturing heritage, rooted in the founders’ personal involvement in production.
Awards and recognition
Elizabeth has received numerous awards over its decades of operation, reinforcing its status as a long-established local fashion brand in Indonesia. Recognitions include:
- 21 Kartini Indonesia
- Upakarti
- Top Brand
- Indonesia Living Legend Award
- The Best Industry Marketing Champion 2020[1]
60th Anniversary
In 2023, Elizabeth celebrated its 60th anniversary.[1] The commemoration included a special collection inspired by founder Handoko Subali and the sepeda kumbang he used to sell bags in the company’s early days. The campaign featured a large bag-shaped pop-up store, for which the brand received a MURI (Museum Rekor Indonesia) record. The bicycle symbolism highlights the company’s journey from a single-machine home industry to a nationwide fashion business.
Significance in Indonesian fashion
Elizabeth occupies a distinctive position in the Indonesian fashion landscape as a legacy local brand. Its history spans multiple generations, combining traditional retail heritage, locally developed manufacturing, and contemporary affordable fashion. Unlike newer labels that emerged primarily through social media or e-commerce, Elizabeth built its customer base through decades of physical retail and repeat patronage before adapting to digital commerce.
Key factors contributing to its distinctiveness include:
- Longevity: Continuous operation since 1963.[1]
- Category association: Handbags remain central to its identity despite diversification.
- Local heritage: An authentically Indonesian brand originating in Bandung.
- Accessible positioning: Focus on affordable fashion rather than luxury.
- Physical distribution: Extensive store network providing visibility across Indonesian cities.
- Adaptability: Successful expansion into new categories and digital retail while retaining core identity.
- Multi-generational appeal: Relevance maintained through a blend of classic styling, affordability, and updated designs.[1]
