Fuji Xerox was a Japanese multinational company specializing in document management, office printing, digital printing, workflow automation, and business solutions. For nearly six decades, it operated as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of photocopiers, laser printers, multifunction devices (MFDs), and enterprise document solutions across the Asia-Pacific region. In 2021, the company was renamed FUJIFILM Business Innovation Corp., marking the end of the Fuji Xerox brand after the conclusion of its long-standing partnership with Xerox. [1]
History
Formation (1962)
Fuji Xerox was established in 1962 as a 50:50 joint venture between Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd. (now FUJIFILM Holdings) and Rank Xerox, the European subsidiary of Xerox Corporation. The partnership combined Xerox’s pioneering photocopy technology with Fujifilm’s manufacturing expertise and strong presence in Asia. The company’s first product was the Fuji Xerox 914, based on the famous Xerox 914 copier. [1]
Expansion
During the 1960s and 1970s, Fuji Xerox expanded rapidly throughout Asia-Pacific by establishing regional offices, manufacturing facilities, and distribution networks. The company entered the Philippine market in 1965 and later expanded into Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, China, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam. [1]
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Fuji Xerox invested heavily in research and development, quality control, and environmentally sustainable manufacturing. It became recognized for producing highly reliable office equipment while pioneering document workflow technologies. [1]
Innovation
Fuji Xerox became known for several technological innovations, including:
-
Digital multifunction printers (MFPs)
-
High-speed production printing systems
-
Laser printing technologies
-
Electronic document management
-
Cloud-based document services
-
AI-assisted workflow automation
-
Secure enterprise printing
-
Managed print services (MPS)
The company also emphasized environmental sustainability through recycling programs, energy-efficient products, and remanufacturing initiatives. [1]
Ownership Changes
Originally, Fuji Xerox was jointly owned by Fujifilm and Xerox.
Over time, Fujifilm gradually increased its ownership:
-
1962: 50% Fujifilm / 50% Rank Xerox
-
2001: Fujifilm increased ownership to 75%
-
2019: FUJIFILM Holdings acquired Xerox’s remaining 25% stake, making Fuji Xerox a wholly owned Fujifilm subsidiary. [1]
This acquisition ended one of the longest-running technology joint ventures in the office equipment industry.
Rebranding
On April 1, 2021, Fuji Xerox officially changed its corporate name to FUJIFILM Business Innovation Corp.
The rebranding reflected:
-
the expiration of the technology agreement with Xerox,
-
full ownership by Fujifilm,
-

-
increased focus on IT services, cloud solutions, workflow automation, AI, and business process optimization.
After the rebrand, the company began marketing products globally under the Fujifilm brand rather than Fuji Xerox. [1]
