What is Kuhn Rikon?
Kuhn Rikon is essentially a premium Swiss cookware company built around engineering and functional design. Unlike brands whose identity is primarily based on fashion or lifestyle, Kuhn Rikon’s historical reputation comes from solving practical cooking problems through mechanical and manufacturing innovations.
Its most famous example is the DUROMATIC® pressure cooker, introduced in 1949. The company says its design combined a spring valve and bayonet locking system, making pressure cooking quieter, faster and safer than many conventional designs of the period.
The DUROMATIC became so strongly associated with pressure cooking in Switzerland that the brand name itself became commonly used as a generic term for a pressure cooker 2.
A surprisingly old history
There are actually two different dates relevant to Kuhn Rikon’s history:
- 1819 — the Rykon spinning mill was established on the site.
- 1899 — the site became associated with metalworking and cookware production.
- 1926 — Heinrich Kuhn acquired the company and established the business that became the modern Kuhn Rikon.
- 2001 — the company officially adopted the name Kuhn Rikon AG.
- 2026 — the company celebrates 100 years since Heinrich Kuhn’s acquisition 3.
So, saying simply “Kuhn Rikon was founded in 1926” is useful but somewhat incomplete. The physical industrial site has more than two centuries of history, while the Kuhn family’s company history begins in 1926.
Origins: from textile mill to cookware
The story begins in the Töss Valley.
In 1819, a spinning mill called the Rykon spinning mill was established. The valley was an important location for textile manufacturing because the Töss River could provide water power for industrial machinery.
During the nineteenth century, however, the textile industry went through major changes. By 1899, the site had transitioned from textile production to metalworking.
The Kindlimann family established a factory producing items including:
- copper cookware
- iron-sheet cookware
- cauldrons
- pans
- cooking utensils
Locally, the factory became known as “Pfanni.”
This transition is important because Kuhn Rikon’s modern identity ultimately grew out of this combination of Swiss metalworking and cookware manufacturing.
Heinrich Kuhn and the beginning of modern Kuhn Rikon
The decisive moment came in 1926.
Heinrich Kuhn, a Swiss engineer who had previously worked as a mining engineer in Alsace, acquired the struggling cookware company Thiriet & Cie. in the Töss Valley.
The acquisition was a major personal risk: Kuhn invested his savings and borrowed additional money to purchase and rebuild the business 4.
He renamed the company Heinrich Kuhn Metallwarenfabrik. This is the direct predecessor of today’s Kuhn Rikon AG.
The first major innovation: DURO cookware
One of Heinrich Kuhn’s earliest innovations was developed in response to a major technological change in the home: the electric stove.
Traditional cookware had been designed largely for open fires and conventional heating. Electric hotplates, however, worked much better with cookware having a flat, even base.
Kuhn developed the DURO cookware range specifically for electric hobs. The company used aluminium and developed specialized manufacturing techniques to create lightweight cookware with flat bottoms. It also introduced early heat-resistant handles.
This was an early example of what would become a recurring Kuhn Rikon philosophy: new kitchen technology requires new cookware technology. That philosophy continues to characterize the company.
The DUROMATIC revolution
If there is one product responsible for Kuhn Rikon’s international reputation, it is the DUROMATIC® pressure cooker.
Launched in 1949, the DUROMATIC was developed by Jacques Kuhn, Heinrich Kuhn’s son. The design incorporated a spring valve and bayonet locking mechanism. According to Kuhn Rikon, this resulted in a pressure cooker that was quieter, more efficient and safer, while reducing cooking times by roughly one-third compared with conventional cooking methods 5.
This became a landmark product for the company.
Why was it so important?
Pressure cookers were already known before DUROMATIC. Kuhn Rikon’s contribution was to make the technology more practical and user-friendly.
The DUROMATIC became a major Swiss-market product, an important export product, a technological flagship, and a recognizable symbol of Swiss cookware engineering.
By 2009, Kuhn Rikon reported that more than 10 million DUROMATIC pressure cookers had been sold since their 1949 introduction.
DUROMATIC and Swiss culture
The importance of DUROMATIC in Switzerland goes beyond sales. The word “Duromatic” became so closely associated with pressure cooking that it is commonly used in Switzerland almost as a generic name for a pressure cooker.
That’s a significant indication of brand strength. It’s comparable to situations in which a brand name becomes synonymous with an entire product category. For Kuhn Rikon, the DUROMATIC effectively became the Swiss pressure cooker.
The Kuhn family
Kuhn Rikon has remained strongly associated with the Kuhn family.
First generation
Heinrich Kuhn acquired the company in 1926 and established the foundation for modern Kuhn Rikon.
Second generation
Henri Kuhn and Jacques Kuhn developed the company after Heinrich’s death in 1932. Their responsibilities were divided roughly between sales, marketing and administration (Henri) and engineering, product development and manufacturing (Jacques). This partnership was extremely important in turning Kuhn Rikon into a successful cookware manufacturer.
Third generation
The business subsequently passed into the next generation, with Hans-Heinrich Kuhn and Dr. Wolfgang Auwärter-Kuhn becoming involved in management.
Fourth generation
In 2012, members of the fourth generation — including Philipp Kuhn, Dorothee Auwärter, Christian Kuhn and Willi Auwärter — joined the board of directors.
This makes Kuhn Rikon a particularly good example of a multigenerational Swiss family enterprise.
DUROTHERM: another major innovation
Kuhn Rikon’s innovations were not limited to pressure cookers. In 1975, the company introduced DUROTHERM®, a double-walled cookware system.
The concept was to allow cookware to perform three functions:
- Cook
- Serve
- Keep food warm
Kuhn Rikon says DUROTHERM was patented worldwide and subsequently received gold medals at inventor exhibitions in Geneva and Vienna.
The technology was particularly distinctive because of the difficulty of manufacturing functional double-walled cookware.
“Form follows function”
During the 1970s, Kuhn Rikon increasingly embraced the principle of combining aesthetic design with practical functionality. The company developed cookware that could go from stove to dining table to food-warming stage rather than requiring food to be transferred between multiple vessels.
This philosophy eventually influenced products such as DUROTHERM, HOTPAN, and other serving-oriented cookware. The famous red DUROMATIC lid also became an important visual identifier for Kuhn Rikon products.
International expansion
Although deeply Swiss, Kuhn Rikon is not merely a domestic Swiss brand. The company began building an international presence through subsidiaries and export markets.
United Kingdom — 1980
Kuhn Rikon established its first foreign subsidiary in England.
Spain — 1982
A Spanish branch followed. Pressure cookers became particularly popular in Spanish kitchens, where pressure cooking is well suited to dishes involving beans, stews and similar foods.
United States — 1988
Kuhn Rikon Corporation USA was established, giving the brand a stronger presence in one of the world’s largest cookware markets. The company describes the United States as one of its important markets.
Swiss manufacturing
One of the most important aspects of Kuhn Rikon’s identity is Swiss manufacturing. The company continues to manufacture cookware in Rikon, Switzerland, and emphasizes Swiss production, engineering and quality control.
Kuhn Rikon says its manufacturing involves carefully selected raw materials, in-house design and development, specialized production lines, CAD/CAM technology, toolmaking, and continuous process optimization.
This is central to its premium positioning. In simple terms, Kuhn Rikon sells cookware as engineered Swiss equipment rather than simply kitchen decoration.
Product categories
Today, Kuhn Rikon’s portfolio is much broader than pressure cookers.
Pressure cookers
The DUROMATIC® family remains the brand’s signature product. These are aimed at fast, efficient pressure cooking while retaining the engineering heritage that made the original product famous.
Frying pans
Kuhn Rikon produces both coated and uncoated frying pans. The company particularly promotes uncoated pans for high-temperature searing and durability 6.
Pots and cookware
The range includes conventional pots and pans alongside more specialized cookware.
Double-walled cookware
DUROTHERM® remains one of the company’s distinctive technologies.
Food-warming cookware
HOTPAN® was introduced in 2006 as a modern interpretation of the company’s cook-serve-keep-warm philosophy. Kuhn Rikon says it can retain food warmth for up to two hours and reduce electricity consumption in appropriate use cases 7.
Kitchen utensils
The brand also produces a wide range of everyday kitchen tools and accessories.
Design philosophy
Kuhn Rikon’s design philosophy can be summarized as Swiss engineering plus functionality plus durability plus visual simplicity.
The company established an in-house product design department in 2005 to accelerate product development and strengthen its design language. This helped move the brand beyond traditional cookware engineering into contemporary product design.
HOTPAN was the first product to emerge from this new design department and subsequently received international design awards 8.
What does “Swiss” mean for Kuhn Rikon?
“Swiss Made” is a major part of the brand’s positioning. For Kuhn Rikon, Swiss identity is associated with precision manufacturing, engineering, durability, functional design, manufacturing expertise, quality control, and long-term product development.
The company has produced cookware in Rikon for more than a century, and its current materials emphasize the combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern production technology.
It is therefore closer in brand philosophy to Swiss engineering companies than to purely fashion-oriented cookware labels.
The Tibet connection
One of the most unusual aspects of Kuhn Rikon’s history is its connection to the Tibetan community in Switzerland.
In 1964, Switzerland accepted around 1,000 Tibetan refugees. Henri and Jacques Kuhn helped some Tibetan families by providing employment and accommodation 9.
The Kuhn brothers subsequently helped establish the Tibet Institute Rikon, which opened in 1968. The institute became an important spiritual and cultural center for Tibetans living in Switzerland and surrounding countries.
The connection is therefore not merely symbolic: Tibetan workers and their descendants have historically been part of the Kuhn Rikon workforce and community. This gives the company an unusual social history compared with most cookware manufacturers.
The company name
The modern name Kuhn Rikon combines:
- Kuhn — the family that acquired and developed the company
- Rikon — the Swiss locality where the company is based
The official company name today is Kuhn Rikon AG. The name Kuhn Rikon AG was adopted in 2001, replacing the older corporate name Heinrich Kuhn Metallwarenfabrik.
Kuhn Rikon’s position in the cookware market
Kuhn Rikon occupies an interesting position. It is not primarily a mass-market cookware brand. Its strongest identity is as a premium, engineering-oriented Swiss cookware manufacturer.
Its brand reputation is especially strong around pressure cooking, Swiss engineering, durability, functional design, and specialty cookware. The DUROMATIC gives the company an especially strong technological heritage.
What makes Kuhn Rikon different?
Several characteristics distinguish it from ordinary cookware brands.
1. Genuine engineering heritage
The company historically developed its own cookware technologies rather than simply branding generic products.
2. Strong flagship product
DUROMATIC is not just one product among thousands. It is arguably the defining product of the brand.
3. Retains Swiss manufacturing
At least part of the company’s cookware production remains in Rikon, Switzerland, which is central to its premium positioning.
4. Family-owned
The Kuhn and Auwärter families have remained closely involved across multiple generations.
5. Unusually deep industrial history
The company’s story goes from textile manufacturing to metalworking to cookware to pressure-cooking technology to modern kitchen design.

Brand philosophy in one sentence
Kuhn Rikon is a century-old Swiss family cookware company whose identity is built around turning engineering innovation into practical, durable kitchen equipment.
Brand positioning
A useful way to visualize its position is:
Mass-market cookware
↓
Affordable / generic / high-volume
Mid-range premium cookware
↓
Design + materials + brand
Kuhn Rikon
↓
Swiss engineering + specialized technology + functionality + manufacturing heritage
Ultra-luxury cookware
↓
Craftsmanship / prestige / culinary luxury
So Kuhn Rikon is premium, but its premium status comes more from engineering and functionality than from luxury branding.
Why the brand is particularly famous for pressure cookers
There are many cookware manufacturers that make pressure cookers. Kuhn Rikon is unusual because pressure cooking is essentially part of the company’s corporate DNA. The DUROMATIC dates back to 1949, has undergone decades of development, and became deeply embedded in Swiss cooking culture.
That’s why when someone talks about a high-quality Swiss pressure cooker, Kuhn Rikon is one of the first brands that comes to mind.
Current identity in 2026
As of 2026, Kuhn Rikon is celebrating 100 years since Heinrich Kuhn acquired the company in 1926. The company presents itself as a leading Swiss manufacturer of cookware and kitchen utensils, with international subsidiaries and a continuing emphasis on Swiss production.
So although the brand is historically associated with pressure cookers, modern Kuhn Rikon is better understood as a broad premium Swiss kitchenware company whose product portfolio encompasses cookware, frying pans, pressure cookers, kitchen tools and specialized cooking/serving systems.
