History
1969: Founding
The history of McDavid began with Dr. Robert F. McDavid Jr., who engineered a protective knee brace designed specifically for football players. The company identifies this product as the first widely used protective knee brace in the sport.[1] Unlike traditional sporting goods manufacturers, McDavid approached athletic equipment from a clinical sports-medicine and injury-prevention perspective.
1980: Incorporation and Early Growth
Following a period of grassroots expansion, McDavid Knee Guard Inc. was incorporated in Illinois in 1980. During the early 1980s, the company focused on supplying products directly to sports teams and medical institutions.[2] The product portfolio subsequently expanded beyond knee protection to include ankle guards and various other supports.
1986–1989: Expansion of Protection Line
McDavid broadened its offerings with products such as the A101 Ankle Guard. In 1989, the company introduced the Cowboy Collar, a neck-protection device designed for American football. This release marked a significant milestone in McDavid’s evolution into a specialized protective-equipment manufacturer.[2]
1990s: Integration of Performance Apparel
Throughout the 1990s, McDavid diversified its catalog to include knee braces, stabilizers, ankle and back supports, and moisture-management clothing. In 1991, the brand introduced compression apparel to international markets, signaling a strategic shift from traditional bracing toward a combination of protection and performance apparel.[2]
2000s: Introduction of HEX® Technology
A pivotal development occurred in the early 2000s with the launch of HEX® technology. McDavid released its HEXPAD series in the United States in 2004. Rather than utilizing conventional bulky padding, HEX technology employs small hexagonal foam elements integrated directly into apparel. This design allows the padding to move fluidly with the athlete while providing essential impact protection.[1][2]
By the late 2000s, HEX products had gained widespread adoption across professional basketball, professional football, and collegiate sports.[2]
2015: Merger with Shock Doctor
In 2015, McDavid merged with Shock Doctor to form United Sports Brands.[1] This merger brought together two complementary brands under one corporate organization:
- McDavid: Specialized in sports protection, braces, compression, and performance apparel.
- Shock Doctor: Focused on protective equipment, particularly mouthguards and related gear.
Despite the corporate consolidation, McDavid continues to operate as a distinct consumer brand.
Product Categories
McDavid’s product line is organized into four primary categories.
Sports Medicine
This category reflects the company’s original identity and includes knee braces, knee and ankle supports, wrist and elbow supports, back supports, and injury-prevention products. The SportMed line focuses on supporting vulnerable joints and reducing injury incidence while allowing athletes to maintain mobility.[2]
Protective Equipment
McDavid is widely recognized for its impact-protection apparel, which integrates protection directly into clothing rather than requiring external hard-shell gear. Typical products include padded compression shorts and shirts, knee and arm sleeves, and protection for the elbows, shins, hips, and tailbone.
HEX® Technology
HEX® is the brand’s signature innovation, consisting of closed-cell foam padding arranged in a hexagonal pattern and bonded to moisture-management fabric. This configuration allows the material to conform to the athlete’s body.[1][2] Current configurations include:
- HEX VIZ: Lighter and more flexible protection.
- HEX Original: The standard impact-protection design.
- HEX FORCE: Enhanced durability for high-abrasion environments.
- HEX HIGH IMPACT: Firmer, higher-strength protection.[2]
This technology is particularly prevalent in sports involving frequent falls or collisions, such as basketball, where players can utilize padded compression apparel for hip and thigh protection without traditional bulky equipment.
Performance & Recovery Apparel
This category encompasses compression shorts and tights, performance shirts, recovery apparel, and support garments. Technologies such as Cross Compression™ and Targeted Compression™ are designed to enhance circulation and aid in post-activity recovery.[2]
Signature Innovation: HEX® and TEFLX®
HEX® technology addressed the limitation that traditional protective equipment is often bulky and restrictive. By distributing protection across a flexible garment composed of individual hexagonal cells, McDavid created equipment that offers impact protection while retaining an athletic fit.[1][2]
The company later developed TEFLX®, also associated with HEX TUF® products. While standard HEX is designed for body-to-body contact, TEFLX provides greater resistance to abrasion, shearing, and tearing. This makes it suitable for sports like basketball and volleyball, where athletes frequently encounter hard playing surfaces.[2]
Sports Applications
McDavid products are utilized across a diverse range of athletic disciplines, including:
- Basketball
- American football
- Soccer
- Rugby
- Volleyball
- Baseball
- Handball
- Hockey
- Running and training
- General fitness
Historically, the brand maintains its strongest association with contact and collision sports, where joint stabilization and impact protection are critical.
Brand Philosophy and Positioning
McDavid operates with a philosophy centered on three interconnected pillars:
- Protection: Reducing the likelihood and severity of sports-related impacts.
- Performance: Ensuring protection does not compromise movement through lightweight, flexible, and moisture-wicking designs.
- Recovery: Providing apparel and products that facilitate a return to training and competition.[2]
Unlike mainstream sportswear companies that focus on lifestyle fashion, McDavid positions itself as a specialized brand at the intersection of sports medicine, injury prevention, protective equipment, performance apparel, and recovery. Its target market includes professional, collegiate, youth, and amateur athletes, as well as athletic trainers, coaches, and sports medicine professionals.
Global Presence
Although founded in the United States, McDavid has developed a significant international footprint with operations covering North America, Europe, and Japan.[2] Japan has been a particularly important market; products entered the country in the late 1980s, leading to the establishment of a dedicated Japanese operation. McDavid supports have seen significant adoption in Japanese rugby, American football, baseball, and basketball.[2]
Corporate Structure
McDavid began as an independent entity focused on sports medicine. Following the 2015 merger with Shock Doctor, it became part of United Sports Brands.[1] It is important to distinguish between McDavid as the consumer-facing brand and United Sports Brands as the broader corporate parent organization.
