History
Mungyo has an unusually long history for an art-materials brand. The company was founded on August 15, 1946, as Mungyo Blackboard Company (λ¬Έκ΅ννμ¬) in Bosu-dong, Jung-gu, Busan. Its original business was making blackboards, rather than artist materials.[2]
In 1952, Mungyo began producing chalk, establishing the connection with writing and drawing materials that would become central to the company.[2] A major development came in 1966, when the company was renamed Mungyo Industrial Company. Around this period, it also entered artistic materials: the company’s Korean history records that it obtained a patent related to artists’ pastel production and began manufacturing painting pastels.[2]
The company subsequently expanded its manufacturing activities:
- 1974: Factory moved from Busan to Eobang-dong, Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do.
- 1979: Mungyo acquired a plaster factory and began plaster production.
- 1986: Mungyo brought a French modern-pastel exhibition to Korea.
- 1987: It began sponsoring the Korean Pastel Association, a relationship its history says is ongoing.
- 1998: It began producing whiteboard markers and permanent markers.
- 2001: It expanded into glue-stick manufacturing.
- 2003: It established a factory in Shanghai, China.
- 2007: It established a new factory and logistics warehouse in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do.
- 2013: It received an Asia Design Excellence award at Paperworld Frankfurt.[1]
Although Mungyo is now strongly associated with art supplies, its roots are actually in school equipment, chalk, and manufacturing.
The pastel connection
Pastels are arguably the most distinctive part of Mungyo’s modern identity. The company produces both oil pastels and dry pastels, with its current catalog including:
- Soft Oil Pastels
- Standard Oil Pastels
- Metallic Oil Pastels
- Fluorescent Oil Pastels
- Student Oil Pastels
- Handmade Soft Pastels
- Soft Pastels
- Semi-Hard Pastels
- Drawing Pastels
- Square Pastels
- Round Pastels
- Watercolor Crayons
- Pastel papers and accessories[1]
Mungyo describes its pastel range as emphasizing rich, sophisticated tones, softness, warmth, and tactile response. This helps explain why the brand is particularly recognizable among people interested in pastel drawing, illustration, sketching, mixed media, and oil-pastel artwork.
Mungyo’s oil pastels
Mungyo offers a range from relatively accessible/basic oil pastels to more specialized products. Its current catalog lists a Soft Oil Pastel (MOPV) as a flagship/best product, alongside basic, metallic, fluorescent, semi-jumbo and student varieties. This gives the brand a fairly broad positioning: it isn’t exclusively a professional fine-art manufacturer, nor is it exclusively a school-supply company. It spans student β hobbyist β serious artist use.
Dry pastels
Mungyo also has a substantial dry-pastel portfolio. Its current catalog includes:
- Handmade Soft Pastels (MPHM)
- Soft Pastels (MPV)
- Round Soft Pastels (MPA)
- Semi-Hard Pastels (MPL)
- Drawing Pastels
- Standard Square Pastels (MPS)
- Square Soft Pastels (MP)
- Isabelle Edition pastels
The handmade soft pastels are particularly notable because they move Mungyo beyond the perception of being merely a mass-market stationery manufacturer.
Beyond pastels
Although pastels are probably the brand’s signature artistic category, Mungyo is considerably broader. Its current product structure covers:

- Watercolor
- Acrylic
- Coloring tools
- Paint-related products

Mungyo also lists marking, cleaning, and special-use products under its household category.
Mungyo is better understood as a diversified Korean writing, art, educational and creative-materials manufacturer than simply an βoil pastel brand.β
Corporate development
Mungyo’s corporate structure has changed several times. In 2002, the chalkboard business was separated from Mungyo Chemical and Mungyo School Supplies was established, while a new carbonated-chalk factory was completed and Mungyo Corporation was established.[2]
In 2005, the dental and medical plaster business was spun off as DK MUNGYO Corp.[2] In 2018, portions of the glue-stick and injection-molding businesses were separated into MUNGYO ONS Corp.[2] Then, in 2023, MUNGYO Corporation merged with DK MUNGYO Corp. according to the company’s official history.[2]
The company also moved its chalk factory to Bogor, Indonesia, in 2022, indicating that its manufacturing footprint extends beyond Korea.[2]
International presence
Mungyo has developed an international presence through both its products and manufacturing operations. One indication is the company’s establishment of a Shanghai factory in 2003. Another is its participation in international stationery and creative-industry events, including Paperworld Frankfurt and Paperworld Shanghai.
Its products are now sold in markets outside Korea, particularly through art-supply and stationery channels. The international-facing Mungyo website itself is available in English and organizes the company’s products for global customers.
Awards and recognition
Mungyo has received recognition both for its products and its manufacturing/design activities. Some notable examples documented by the company include:
- 1973: Gold medal at the National Quality Control Competition.
- 1983: Gold medal at the National Saemaul QC Competition.
- 2012: Selected as βExtraordinary Stationeryβ at Paperworld Shanghai.
- 2013: Received Asia Design Excellence at Paperworld Frankfurt.[1]
- 2025: At Germany’s Creativeworld Creative Impulse Award, Mungyo’s Acrylic Paint Stix won 1st place for Product of the Year, while Bath Crayon won 2nd place for Children’s Product of the Year.
The 2025 awards are particularly interesting because they demonstrate that the company is continuing to develop new product categories rather than relying solely on its traditional pastel and chalk business.
Brand identity
Mungyo’s current identity is built around color, creativity, accessibility, and tactile art-making. Its slogan, βCOLOR YOUR LIFE,β is deliberately broad. Rather than positioning itself solely as a high-end fine-art brand, Mungyo addresses several audiences: professional and aspiring artists, students, children, teachers, hobbyists, crafters, and general stationery users.
This creates an interesting position in the art-materials market:
Mungyo sits somewhere between traditional Korean educational-material manufacturing and modern international art-supply branding.
Its historical connection to chalk and school equipment gives the company a practical, industrial heritage, while its pastel range gives it a recognizable fine-art identity.
Mungyo and Korean art culture
One particularly interesting detail is Mungyo’s relationship with the Korean Pastel Association. The company says it began sponsoring the association in 1987, and lists this sponsorship as continuing. It also organized/introduced a French modern-pastel exhibition in Korea in 1986, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Korea-France diplomatic relations.[2]
This suggests that Mungyo’s relationship with pastels isn’t simply a product-category decision. The company has historically participated in promoting pastel culture and education in Korea.
Manufacturing heritage
A defining characteristic of Mungyo is that it has historically been a manufacturer, rather than simply a brand that outsources products and puts its name on them. Its history includes dedicated factories for chalk, plaster, educational materials and other products, as well as manufacturing operations in Korea, China and Indonesia.[2]
This helps explain the unusually wide range of products under the Mungyo name. The company has essentially evolved from:
blackboards β chalk β educational materials β pastels/art materials β markers/paints β broader creative and specialty products.

What makes Mungyo distinctive?
If you compare Mungyo conceptually with other art-material brands, several characteristics stand out.
First, its age. A company originating in 1946 has considerably more manufacturing history than many contemporary art brands.
Second, its chalk-and-school heritage. Mungyo didn’t begin as an artist-pastel specialist; artistic materials grew out of a much broader educational-materials business.
Third, its emphasis on pastels. Pastels have become one of the company’s most recognizable artistic specialties, encompassing both oil and dry varieties.
Fourth, its price/market breadth. Its catalog includes products for children and students alongside professional-oriented products such as handmade soft pastels and professional soft oil pastels.[1]
Finally, its Korean identity. Unlike some global art brands that originated in Europe or North America, Mungyo is a distinctly Korean manufacturer whose history is intertwined with Korea’s postwar development of educational and industrial materials.
Mungyo today
As of 2026, Mungyo presents itself as a broad creative-materials company rather than only a pastel manufacturer. Its official catalog spans art, education, children’s products, markers, chalk, boards, adhesives, clay and household/special-use products.
The company’s recent product recognition also shows a continued push into newer creative formats, particularly products such as Acrylic Paint Stix and children’s coloring products.
In one sentence
Mungyo is a Korean creative-materials manufacturer founded in 1946 as a blackboard maker, which evolved through chalk and educational supplies into a diversified art-and-stationery company internationally recognized particularly for its oil pastels, dry pastels, markers, paints, crayons and other coloring products.
