History
1920: Foundation
The origins of New Era trace back to Buffalo, New York, in 1920. Ehrhardt Koch, a 37-year-old German immigrant and skilled hat maker, sought to improve traditional hat manufacturing through superior craftsmanship and production techniques.
With financial assistance from his sister Rose, Koch founded the business that would eventually become New Era Cap. Initially, the company focused on fashionable headwear rather than athletic gear. In its first year of operation, it reportedly produced approximately 60,000 Gatsby-style caps.3 Consequently, the company did not begin as a baseball-cap manufacturer; this transformation occurred later.
1930s: Entering baseball
Koch’s son, Harold Koch, joined the family business in 1932. He identified two significant market shifts: demand for traditional fashion hats was waning, while professional baseball was gaining popularity.
In response, New Era began developing baseball caps. In 1934, the company produced its first professional baseball cap for the Cleveland Indians (now the Cleveland Guardians). This milestone marked the beginning of New Era’s enduring relationship with professional baseball and became a pivotal turning point in the company’s history.4
1940s: Survival during World War II
Manufacturing during World War II was challenged by shortages of fabric and other raw materials. The Koch family adapted by sourcing surplus plain fabrics from New York’s garment district.
According to the company’s historical accounts, the family even dyed some of this fabric at home using a washing machine to match the specific colors of local baseball teams.5 This ability to maintain production during wartime helped establish New Era’s reputation for adaptability and resilience.
The 59FIFTY
Birth of an icon
Arguably the most significant product in New Era’s history is the 59FIFTY. In 1954, Harold Koch redesigned the fitted baseball cap, creating the silhouette now known as the 59FIFTY. Designed as a structured, high-quality fitted cap, it was initially associated primarily with professional baseball.6
While materials, manufacturing techniques, and performance features have evolved over decades, the basic design has remained remarkably consistent. New Era notes that the modern 59FIFTY retains much of the design and construction principles established in the 1950s.7
Cultural significance of the 59FIFTY
The 59FIFTY eventually transcended its role as sports equipment to become a form of identity and self-expression. A fitted cap could communicate:
- Support for a specific baseball team
- Geographic origin or hometown pride
- Connection to a particular city
- Affiliation with hip-hop or street culture
- Fashion preferences and personal style
This evolution from sports uniform to fan merchandise to fashion object to cultural symbol is central to the brand’s success. In 2024, New Era celebrated the 70th anniversary of the 59FIFTY.8
Relationship with Major League Baseball
New Era’s partnership with Major League Baseball (MLB) is perhaps the most critical factor in the company’s development. By 1950, New Era was reportedly the only independent cap maker supplying major-league teams, including the Brooklyn Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, and Detroit Tigers.9
The relationship expanded significantly in subsequent decades. In 1993, New Era became the exclusive supplier of on-field caps for MLB. This agreement transformed the 59FIFTY from a standard baseball cap into an authentic representation of professional baseball, allowing fans to purchase essentially the same style worn by players. This concept of “authenticity” became a major competitive advantage for the brand.
New Era and streetwear
The brand’s transformation into a lifestyle label accelerated during the 1990s. A defining moment occurred in 1996 when filmmaker and cultural figure Spike Lee requested a red New York Yankees cap to coordinate with his outfit for the World Series. As the Yankees traditionally wore navy caps, this request was unconventional.
New Era, MLB, and the Yankees ultimately approved the special order. This event demonstrated that a team cap could function independently of traditional sports uniform boundaries. New Era credits this episode with helping push the 59FIFTY toward streetwear and lifestyle culture.10
During this period, New Era caps began appearing not only on athletes and fans but also on hip-hop artists, musicians, actors, filmmakers, skateboarders, and fashion personalities. The cap became integrated into everyday wardrobes rather than being reserved solely for sporting events.
The New Era Flag
One of the brand’s most recognizable visual elements is the small flag logo embroidered on the wearer’s left side. This flag became a crucial component of New Era’s modern identity and eventually appeared on professional on-field caps as well. Historical records identify 1997 as a key development point for the Flag logo, with the company noting its appearance on MLB on-field caps in 2016.11
Unlike prominent front-facing team logos, the New Era flag is deliberately subtle. This design choice ensures brand recognition even when a cap features another organization’s logo on the front. For instance, a Yankees cap may display the NY logo on the front while bearing the New Era flag on the side.
Expansion into other sports
While baseball remains fundamental to New Era’s identity, the company has expanded into other major American sports leagues.
NFL
In 2012, New Era became the official sideline cap supplier for the National Football League (NFL).12
NBA
In 2016, New Era became the official on-court cap supplier for the National Basketball Association (NBA). This period was historically significant as it granted New Era exclusive headwear rights across MLB, NFL, and NBA simultaneously, broadening the brand’s audience beyond baseball fans to include followers of football and basketball.
Product range
Although synonymous with caps, New Era is no longer exclusively a hat manufacturer. Its contemporary product line includes:
Headwear
- 59FIFTY: Structured fitted cap (flagship silhouette)
- 9FIFTY: Adjustable snapback
- 9FORTY: Adjustable, typically curved-brim cap
- 39THIRTY: Stretch-fit cap
- Bucket hats
- Trucker caps
- Beanies
- Seasonal headwear varieties
Apparel
The brand produces clothing items such as T-shirts, hoodies, jackets, sweatshirts, jerseys, shorts, and pants.
Accessories
Depending on the market, offerings include bags, cap storage solutions, cap-care products, small accessories, and other lifestyle merchandise. For example, New Era’s Philippine operation lists fitted, snapback, stretch, and adjustable caps alongside specialized care and storage products.13
Design philosophy
New Era’s identity combines sport authenticity with cultural relevance. Core design characteristics include:
- Structured silhouettes: The 59FIFTY features a firm crown and flat visor, providing its distinctive profile.
- Team identity: Professional team logos remain among the most recognizable design elements.
- Fitted sizing: Unlike typical adjustable caps, the 59FIFTY is produced in specific fitted sizes.
- Branding: The small New Era flag serves as a consistent brand signature.
- Limited editions and collaborations: Frequent partnerships with sports teams, artists, entertainment properties, and fashion brands allow the basic cap silhouette to serve as a canvas for diverse cultural identities.
Collaborations
Collaboration is integral to New Era’s modern strategy. The company partners with organizations and personalities across professional sports, music, entertainment, fashion, streetwear, pop culture, film, television, anime, and gaming.
A notable historical example is the relationship between New Era, Spike Lee, MLB, and the New York Yankees that developed in the 1990s. More recently, in 2026, New Era partnered with Timberland and MLB teams on a limited-edition collection combining caps with boots, illustrating the brand’s continued movement between sports and lifestyle fashion.14
Globalization
Originally a Buffalo-based manufacturer, New Era has evolved into a global entity. During the 2000s, the company expanded internationally, establishing operations in markets including Europe, Japan, and Australia.15
Today, products are sold in more than 80 countries, supported by over 500 licenses across sports, fashion, music, and entertainment.16 New Era is no longer simply an American baseball-cap company; it is a global lifestyle brand representing various sports teams, cities, countries, entertainment franchises, and cultural communities.
New Era in the Philippines
New Era maintains an official presence in the country through New Era PH. The local operation positions the brand as a headwear label rooted in sports that also influences street and lifestyle culture. The official Philippine online store is operated by Authentic Caps Distribution, Inc., which holds exclusive distribution rights for New Era caps in the Philippines.17
This local infrastructure supports the brand’s popularity in the Philippines, where baseball caps are widely incorporated into casual and streetwear outfits regardless of the wearer’s interest in American sports.
Corporate identity
New Era remains closely associated with the Koch family, which has been involved across multiple generations. Chris Koch, Ehrhardt Koch’s great-grandson, became president in 1993 and CEO in 2001. In 2006, the company moved its corporate headquarters back to downtown Buffalo.18
The family-business aspect is central to the New Era narrative: a company founded by a craftsman in 1920 developed into an international brand without abandoning its Buffalo origins.
Cultural significance
New Era played a pivotal role in changing perceptions of the baseball cap. Originally a functional part of a baseball uniform, the cap evolved through New Era’s influence into a representation of team identity and eventually a piece of fashion and personal identity.
This evolution explains New Era’s unique position between sportswear and streetwear. A New Era Yankees cap, for example, can simultaneously represent the New York Yankees, New York City, baseball, American sports culture, hip-hop culture, streetwear, fashion, and the wearer’s personal identity. This multi-layered meaning has sustained the brand’s cultural relevance for over a century.
Brand positioning
New Era occupies four overlapping markets:
- Sports: Official league and team relationships provide credibility and authenticity.
- Streetwear: The 59FIFTY’s influence in hip-hop and street culture established the baseball cap as a fashion item.
- Lifestyle: Caps are worn casually regardless of attendance at games or fandom.
- Pop culture: Collaborations connect the brand with movies, music, artists, and entertainment franchises.
Competitive advantage
New Era’s primary competitive advantage is authenticity. While many brands manufacture baseball caps, New Era’s history is deeply embedded in professional sports. Having manufactured professional baseball caps since 1934, developed the 59FIFTY in 1954, served as an MLB on-field supplier, and expanded into NFL and NBA headwear, the brand successfully transferred sports credibility into streetwear and fashion.19
Unlike brands that simply apply sports logos to fashion hats, New Era’s fashion credibility stems from its products’ origins as authentic sports equipment.
