History
Early years (1909–1930s)
Permatex was founded in 1909 by Constant A. Benoit Sr. The inaugural product was a shellac-based compound designed to bond bicycle tyres to rims. As the automobile industry expanded, the company shifted its focus towards automotive applications.[1]
A significant turning point occurred in 1915 when Benoit attended a 24-hour automobile endurance race at Sheepshead Bay, New York. After observing repeated engine gasket failures, he provided an experimental gasket cement that enabled a racing vehicle to continue running. This event helped establish Permatex as a supplier of automotive sealing products.[1]
During the 1930s, Permatex gained recognition through motorsports. Its Form-A-Gasket products were used in racing applications, helping to build the company’s reputation for reliability under demanding conditions.[1]
Expansion and Corporate Changes
Mid-20th century growth
Following the death of founder Constant Benoit, leadership passed to his son, Pete Benoit. In the 1950s, the company moved manufacturing operations from Brooklyn, New York, to Kansas City and later relocated its headquarters to Florida.[1]
During this period, Permatex expanded its product range beyond traditional gasket compounds into automotive chemical maintenance products.
Acquisition by Loctite
In 1972, Permatex was acquired by Loctite Corporation. Under Loctite ownership, Permatex continued developing automotive chemical products, including silicone-based gasket technologies.[1]
Return to independence
In 1999, Permatex was purchased by private investors and expanded its product portfolio. The company introduced new products, acquired additional brands, and strengthened its position in automotive maintenance chemicals.[1]
Acquisition by ITW
In 2005, Permatex became part of Illinois Tool Works (ITW), a major global manufacturing company founded in 1912. Under ITW, Permatex became part of a larger portfolio of specialty chemical and industrial product brands.[1][2]
