History
Founding and early years (1953–1960s)
Rothco began in 1953 when Milton Somberg became involved with the family business, then known as Morris Rothenberg & Son.[1] The company originally operated as a small surplus dealer on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, focusing on used clothing, textile goods, and World War II military surplus items.[1]
During the post–World War II period, military surplus clothing and equipment became widely available in the United States. Rothco built its early reputation by sourcing and distributing these surplus goods to civilian customers, outdoor enthusiasts, and retailers.
As military surplus supplies became less predictable, Rothco adapted by shifting from primarily reselling surplus items towards designing and manufacturing its own military-inspired clothing and equipment.
Expansion and growth
By the late 20th century, Rothco had evolved into a major supplier of military-style products. The company expanded beyond surplus clothing into manufactured apparel and gear based on military functionality, including field jackets, cargo pants, combat-style uniforms, tactical bags, utility equipment, and outdoor accessories. The brand’s designs were influenced by military requirements such as durability, storage capacity, weather resistance, and practicality.
In the 1970s, Milton Somberg’s son Howard joined the company and helped guide its expansion. Under Howard Somberg’s leadership, Rothco increased product development, expanded facilities, and strengthened its position in military, tactical, work, and outdoor markets. The company later established a larger headquarters and distribution operation in Ronkonkoma, New York. Rothco continues to operate as a family-owned business.[1]
Brand identity
Rothco’s identity is built around the concept of military heritage combined with civilian practicality. Unlike purely fashion-oriented brands, Rothco focuses on functional designs originally inspired by military uniforms and equipment. Key characteristics of the brand include rugged construction, utility-focused designs, affordable pricing, military-inspired aesthetics, wide product availability, and functional outdoor and work applications.
The brand is often associated with the visual language of olive drab military colours, camouflage patterns, cargo pockets, field jackets, tactical accessories, and workwear silhouettes.
Product categories
Military clothing
Military apparel remains Rothco’s core category. Popular products include BDU (Battle Dress Uniform) pants, cargo pants, combat shirts, military jackets, flight jackets, parkas, tactical vests, and military-style uniforms. Rothco’s clothing often reproduces classic military designs adapted for civilian use.[2]
Tactical gear
Rothco produces equipment aimed at tactical users, security personnel, outdoor users, and enthusiasts. Examples include tactical bags, MOLLE-compatible equipment, utility pouches, belts, gloves, holsters, and load-bearing equipment.
Outdoor and survival equipment
The company also produces outdoor products inspired by military field equipment, including backpacks, camping accessories, survival tools, outdoor clothing, and field gear.
Influence on fashion and streetwear
Although Rothco began as a military supply company, its products have become influential in casual fashion and streetwear. Military-inspired clothing—especially cargo pants, camouflage garments, and field jackets—has repeatedly entered mainstream fashion trends.
Rothco gained attention among streetwear consumers because its products offered authentic military styling at accessible prices compared with designer interpretations of military clothing.[3] The brand has been worn and referenced in fashion communities that value utility aesthetics, workwear style, vintage military looks, oversized silhouettes, and functional clothing.
Signature products
M-65 Field Jacket
Inspired by the classic U.S. military field jacket design, the M-65 represents one of the most recognisable military outerwear styles.
BDU Cargo Pants
Rothco’s BDU pants are among its most popular products, known for multiple cargo pockets, a loose military-inspired fit, durable fabrics, and camouflage options.
Canvas Bags
Military-style canvas bags are another long-running product category connected to Rothco’s surplus heritage.
Customer base
Rothco serves a broad range of customers, including military enthusiasts, outdoor adventurers, hunters and campers, security personnel, law enforcement communities, workers needing durable clothing, streetwear consumers, and collectors of military-inspired products.[1]
Reputation
Strengths
Rothco is commonly recognised for its long history in military apparel, large product selection, affordable pricing, practical designs, and strong availability through retailers.
Criticism
Some users note that Rothco products are designed primarily for commercial and recreational markets rather than always meeting the exact standards of issued military equipment. Quality can vary depending on the product category, with some items emphasising affordability over premium materials.
Cultural significance
Rothco represents the crossover between military utility and civilian lifestyle. Its products demonstrate how military equipment designs can move beyond their original purpose and influence outdoor culture, workwear, street fashion, hip-hop fashion, and utility clothing trends. The brand’s longevity comes from maintaining a recognisable military identity while adapting to changing consumer interests.[3]
