History
Sensodyne was first introduced in 1961 as one of the earliest toothpastes specifically developed to relieve tooth sensitivity. The original formula contained strontium chloride, an ingredient intended to reduce the pain caused by exposed dentin. [1]
The brand was originally developed and marketed by Block Drug Company, a pharmaceutical company founded in New York. In 2000, Block Drug was acquired by SmithKline Beecham, which later became GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). As GSK expanded its consumer healthcare business, Sensodyne grew into one of its flagship oral care brands. [1]
In July 2022, GSK spun off its consumer healthcare division into a new independent company called Haleon, making Sensodyne one of Haleon’s leading global brands. [1]
Purpose
Sensodyne’s primary purpose is to help relieve and prevent tooth sensitivity, a condition that causes short, sharp pain when consuming hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and beverages. [2]
The brand’s mission is to provide everyday protection against sensitivity while also offering the benefits expected from a modern toothpaste, including:
-
Cavity prevention
-
Plaque control
-
Fresh breath
-
Gum health
-
Enamel protection
-
Teeth whitening (selected products)
How Sensodyne Works
Tooth sensitivity typically occurs when the protective enamel or gum tissue is worn away, exposing the dentin beneath. Tiny channels within the dentin allow external stimuli to reach the nerves inside the tooth, resulting in pain. [2]
Different Sensodyne products use different technologies to reduce sensitivity:
Potassium Nitrate
Potassium nitrate works by calming the nerve inside the tooth, reducing its response to painful stimuli over time. [2]
Stannous Fluoride
Stannous fluoride creates a protective barrier over exposed dentin, helping block the pathways that lead to the tooth’s nerve while also protecting against cavities. [2]
NovaMin Technology
Some Sensodyne Repair & Protect products contain NovaMin, a calcium sodium phosphosilicate bioactive glass that helps form a mineral layer over exposed dentin, supporting the natural repair process of sensitive areas. Availability varies by country. [2]
