About Technos
Overview
Technos is a watch brand with Swiss origins and a distinct Brazilian identity. Founded by the Gunzinger watchmaking family in Switzerland, the brand’s official trademark registration dates to 1924. It subsequently became an internationally exported Swiss watch name, achieving particular success in Japan and Brazil. Today, Technos is primarily associated with the Brazilian watch industry and is operated by Brazilian interests, although it retains its historical Swiss heritage.[1]

Corporate histories sometimes cite conflicting dates regarding the brand’s arrival in Brazil. The Brazilian group records 1956 as the start of its representation and import business via Centauro Importadora, while consumer-facing histories describe the brand arriving in 1958 through businessman Mário Goettems.[1][3]
Origins in Switzerland
The history of Technos begins with the Gunzinger family, a watchmaking dynasty in the Swiss Jura region. In 1900, Melchior Gunzinger established M. Gunzinger-Hug in Welschenrohr, in the canton of Solothurn. The enterprise produced watches and gradually developed into a significant local manufacturer.[2]
Melchior’s son, Joseph Gunzinger, subsequently took over the business. In 1920, the company was reorganized as Gunzinger Frères / Gunzinger Bros. Four years later, Joseph registered the Technos trademark, and the company began producing and exporting watches under this name.[2]
The name Technos is derived from the Greek word technē, which relates to skill, craft, art, and technical knowledge. This etymology was considered particularly appropriate for a traditional watchmaking company.[1]
Distinction between founding and trademark dates
It is necessary to distinguish between the establishment of the manufacturing business and the creation of the brand:
- 1900: The Gunzinger watchmaking company was established.
- 1920: Joseph Gunzinger reorganized the company as Gunzinger Frères.
- 1924: Technos became a registered watch trademark, and the first Technos-branded watch was launched.[1]
Consequently, while the watchmaking business dates to 1900, the Technos brand name specifically dates to 1924.
Early 20th-century expansion
Technos expanded considerably during the interwar period. By approximately 1930, the Swiss factory reportedly employed around 360 people, with Japan and China already serving as important export destinations. The company subsequently extended its international business into Asian, European, and American markets.[1]
Following World War II, Technos benefited from renewed global demand for Swiss timepieces. Its combination of Swiss manufacturing, relatively accessible pricing, and international distribution facilitated the development of a substantial export business.[1] Japan eventually emerged as one of the brand’s most critical markets.
Significance of the Japanese market
Japan occupies a significant place in the history of Technos. During the post-war period, the brand developed prestigious collections specifically for the Japanese market, including:
- Borazon
- Skymaster
- Skylight
- Skydiver
- Sky Chief
Historical accounts highlight the Borazon collection as an innovation associated with durability and resistance.[1] The Japanese market was also pivotal because the subsequent rise of Japanese quartz watches presented a major challenge to Technos and other traditional Swiss manufacturers.
The quartz crisis
The quartz crisis of the 1970s marked a turning point for the company. As Japanese manufacturers introduced increasingly accurate and inexpensive quartz watches, the global market shifted fundamentally, placing enormous economic pressure on traditional Swiss mechanical watch companies.
When Technos was sold to General Watch Co. in 1970, it reportedly employed about 450 people and exported globally, particularly to Japan and Brazil. However, within several years, the company experienced a sharp decline. By 1976, Japan was reportedly the only market still generating significant orders.[2]
In 1977, the company moved to Biel/Bienne, operating within a restructuring involving other Swiss watch firms. This period marked the beginning of Technos’ transformation from a traditional Swiss manufacturer into a brand whose future would be shaped largely outside Switzerland.
Transition to Brazilian ownership
Brazil is arguably the most important chapter in modern Technos history. The brand grew rapidly in the country during the 1960s and 1970s. By 1973, Brazil had become the principal representative market for Technos, with sales exceeding one million watches per year.[1]
Unlike typical export relationships, Brazil eventually became the centre of the brand’s identity and business operations. In 1982, the Brazilian operation established a watch assembly and distribution facility in Manaus, in the Amazon region.[3] Corporate history describes the company as becoming a 100% Brazilian brand around this period, with its own factory in Manaus.[1]
The Brazilian operation ultimately acquired the rights to the Technos trademark. While corporate history places the acquisition of worldwide brand rights in the 1990s, other accounts describe the transfer occurring in stages, with remaining worldwide rights acquired in 2002.[3] Consequently, Technos is best described as a brand that began as a Swiss watchmaker but evolved into a Brazilian-owned entity while retaining its Swiss historical heritage.
Notable models and collections
Skydiver
The Skydiver is one of the most recognizable names in the brand’s history. Introduced in Brazil in 1985/1986, the collection became central to the Technos identity due to its sporty styling, water resistance, robust construction, aviation aesthetic, and accessible pricing.[1] The Skydiver name remains strongly associated with the brand in Brazil.
Vintage mechanical models
Technos produced numerous historically significant mechanical and automatic watches:
- Star Chief: Introduced in 1963, this model featured automatic movements with date displays and substantial water resistance.[4]
- The King: Launched in 1964, this robust automatic model featured monobloc cases with water resistance reaching 250–300 m, depending on the specific variant.[4]
- The Queen: A ladies’ counterpart to The King, introduced during the 1960s.[4]
- Sky Chief: Associated with aviation and designed for pilot requirements, emphasizing readability and precision. Historical records place its introduction in 1940.[1]
- Borazon: A line historically associated with enhanced durability and resistance.[1]
Modern product range
Adapting to the transition from mechanical to quartz technology, the modern company developed a broad product range beyond traditional Swiss mechanical manufacturing. The current catalogue includes watches for everyday wear, formal use, sports, diving, chronograph-style designs, and connected smartwatches. This positions the brand differently from high-end Swiss maisons such as Rolex or Patek Philippe.
Technos Connect
Technos entered the connected-watch market with Technos Connect in 2015.[1] In 2022, the company introduced the Technos Connect Sports in partnership with Flamengo, described as its first smartwatch dedicated to a Brazilian football club.[1]
Centenary celebration
Technos celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2024, based on the 1924 registration of the trademark. For the centenary, the company produced a limited, numbered model inspired by its original Swiss heritage. The anniversary watch featured a Swiss automatic movement, sapphire crystal, 42 mm case, 50 m water resistance, and a transparent caseback.[1] This release underscored that while modern Technos is Brazilian, the company continues to leverage its Swiss origins as a key component of its historical identity.
Manufacturing and modern identity
Modern Technos should not be classified simply as a “Swiss Made” watch brand. While its roots are Swiss, the contemporary company is strongly Brazilian. Corporate materials describe the brand as having been born in Switzerland and subsequently becoming Brazilian.[1] The company operates manufacturing and testing infrastructure in Brazil, with its official site describing a comprehensive watch laboratory where testing is performed according to quality standards.[1]
For buyers and collectors, it is essential to distinguish between eras: a vintage Technos from the mid-20th century may be a genuine Swiss-manufactured watch, whereas a contemporary Technos is generally part of the Brazilian watch industry.
Corporate structure and distribution
The modern brand operates within Grupo Technos, a Brazilian watch group. The group positions Technos as a major Brazilian watch brand emphasizing broad distribution and accessibility.[3] Products are distributed through more than 12,000 points of sale in Brazil, illustrating the scale of the brand in its home market.[3]
Design philosophy and market position
Historically, Technos has occupied the space between traditional watchmaking and mass-market accessibility. Recurring themes in its design language include sportiness, durability, technical styling, accessible pricing, Swiss heritage, Brazilian cultural identity, and practical utility.[1]
The brand’s historical importance stems not from ultra-luxury status, but from its unusual trajectory: from a Swiss family watchmaker to an international Swiss brand, then to a major Japanese and Brazilian export brand, and finally to a Brazilian-owned company. This makes Technos a notable case study in the globalization of the watch industry.
Collector interest
Vintage Technos watches can be of considerable interest to collectors, particularly unusual models, early automatics, chronographs, diving watches, and pieces with distinctive movements or case designs. Collectors may encounter examples with Swiss-made markings, mechanical or automatic movements, unusual case constructions, and specific Japanese or Brazilian market variations.
However, age and provenance are critical factors. A 1960s Technos “The King” belongs to a different horological context than a contemporary quartz model. The brand name alone does not determine technical or collectible value.
Comparison of Swiss and Brazilian eras
| Characteristic | Vintage Swiss Technos | Modern Brazilian Technos |
|---|---|---|
| Historical origin | Switzerland | Brazil |
| Brand era | Mainly 1924–1970s for Swiss production | Modern era |

| Swiss Made | Often, depending on model | Generally not equivalent to vintage Swiss production |
| Main markets | Japan, Brazil, Europe and others | Primarily Brazil/Latin America |
| Collector interest | Often higher for unusual/vintage models | More consumer-oriented |
| Identity | Swiss watchmaking | Brazilian watch brand with Swiss heritage |
