History
Origins (1998–2001)
In the late 1990s, Microsoft noticed that gaming consoles were becoming powerful entertainment systems that could eventually compete with Windows PCs. A small team of Microsoft engineers proposed building a console using DirectX technology, initially calling it the DirectX Box, which was later shortened to Xbox.
Microsoft officially announced the Xbox in 2000 and released the first console on November 15, 2001 in North America. The launch title that defined the platform was Halo: Combat Evolved, which became one of gaming’s most influential franchises. [3]
