History
Foundation and early years
Xtrfy was established in 2013 in Landskrona, Sweden. From its inception, the company positioned itself distinctly from mainstream consumer electronics brands by emphasizing competitive gaming and direct collaboration with professional players. Product development was conducted at its offices in Skåne, Sweden, based on the philosophy that professional players possess valuable practical knowledge derived from thousands of hours of equipment use.[1]
A significant element of Xtrfy’s early identity was its relationship with the Ninjas in Pyjamas (NiP) Counter-Strike organization. This association helped establish Xtrfy as a brand focused specifically on esports rather than general gaming.[2]
Early product development
Xtrfy initially gained recognition for its gaming mice and keyboards before expanding into a broader ecosystem. Notably, the company’s first keyboard, introduced in 2013, utilized CHERRY MX switches. This technological intersection preceded the eventual acquisition of Xtrfy by CHERRY by a decade, making the later corporate combination historically significant.[3]
Design philosophy
The core concept behind Xtrfy is encapsulated in its tagline, “Built on experience.” The company maintains that its products are developed alongside professional esports players, prioritizing practical experience over technical specifications alone.[1]
Esports-first approach
Xtrfy categorizes gaming peripherals as sports equipment rather than standard computer accessories. The stated philosophy is that peripherals such as mice and keyboards should actively enhance a player’s performance at a competitive level.
Collaboration with professional players
Feedback from professional players is integral to the development process. Rather than creating products internally and subsequently marketing them to esports athletes, Xtrfy involves players during the development and testing phases to ensure the equipment meets competitive standards.
Swedish design heritage
Product development remains centered at the company’s facilities in Landskrona, Sweden. Xtrfy has consistently emphasized its Swedish origins and design identity as a key differentiator.[1]
Lightweight gaming mice
The brand became particularly recognizable for its lightweight gaming mice. The Project 4 initiative marked a pivotal moment with the introduction of the M4, an ultralight gaming mouse that defined the brand’s fourth generation. This focus on weight reduction, sensor performance, shape, and competitive ergonomics became a central aspect of Xtrfy’s identity.
Product portfolio
Over time, Xtrfy developed a comprehensive ecosystem for PC gaming peripherals.
Gaming mice
Mice represent the most significant category in Xtrfy’s lineup. The company has produced multiple generations of competitive gaming mice, including the M3, M4, and M8 lines. The M4 served as the starting point for Project 4, an initiative aimed at creating a new generation of gaming products. The M8 Wireless subsequently represented another evolution of the ultralight philosophy and was among the products presented during the launch of CHERRY XTRFY in 2023.[3]
Keyboards
Xtrfy develops mechanical gaming keyboards primarily for competitive players. The K-series features products designed around mechanical switches, compact layouts, and gaming-specific functions. The K5 series was highlighted during the 2023 CHERRY XTRFY launch.[3]
Mousepads
Mousepads form a complementary part of the ecosystem, with surfaces engineered to pair with Xtrfy’s gaming mice.
Headsets and audio
Expanding beyond traditional input devices, Xtrfy introduced gaming headsets and microphones to provide a complete competitive gaming lineup. The current CHERRY XTRFY ecosystem encompasses mice, keyboards, microphones, and headsets.
Accessories
The portfolio includes various accessories and mouse-related equipment, aiming to provide a cohesive setup rather than isolated products.
Relationship with esports
Esports serves as the defining characteristic of the Xtrfy brand. The company has historically collaborated with professional players and teams to develop and validate its products, establishing credibility within the competitive PC gaming community, particularly in Counter-Strike.
This relationship dates back to the company’s founding. In 2026, CHERRY XTRFY announced a renewed partnership with Swedish Counter-Strike legend Emil “HeatoN” Christensen, whose association with Xtrfy originated during the company’s early involvement with Ninjas in Pyjamas.[1]
Xtrfy’s objective extends beyond equipping professionals; the aim is to make professional-grade performance accessible to regular gamers.
Acquisition by CHERRY
In January 2023, German computer peripheral manufacturer CHERRY SE completed the acquisition of Xtrfy Gaming AB and Built on Experience AB, the entities associated with the Xtrfy brand. The reported enterprise value was approximately €7 million.[4]
The acquisition strengthened CHERRY’s position in the gaming and esports sectors, particularly in Europe and North America, while providing access to Xtrfy’s esports network and peripheral expertise. For Xtrfy, the integration offered access to CHERRY’s larger technological, manufacturing, and distribution infrastructure.
CHERRY XTRFY era
In April 2023, CHERRY formally introduced CHERRY XTRFY as its unified gaming brand. Rather than maintaining Xtrfy as an independent subsidiary, CHERRY merged the two identities under a new visual and commercial framework. The combination was described as integrating German engineering and hardware expertise with Swedish design, Xtrfy’s esports experience, and both companies’ gaming networks.[3]
The modern CHERRY XTRFY differs from the original independent entity. While the original Xtrfy was a standalone Swedish esports peripheral company founded in 2013, the current iteration operates within CHERRY, combining esports heritage with broader component expertise. The legal entity remains Cherry Xtrfy AB, based at Rattgatan 7, Landskrona, Sweden.[1]
CHERRY describes the resulting ecosystem as including customizable keyboards, high-speed mice, microphones, and headsets, distributed through international channels, online platforms, and consumer electronics retailers.
Brand identity
The Xtrfy identity is defined by five core principles:
- Competitive performance: Products are engineered to meet the demands of esports and competitive PC gaming.
- Player involvement: Professional gamers serve as a primary source of product development feedback.
- Lightweight and ergonomic design: Emphasis is placed on low weight, shape, and competitive handling, particularly in mice.
- Swedish design heritage: The brand maintains its connection to Landskrona and Swedish product development traditions.
- Accessibility of professional equipment: The goal is to make professional-level equipment available to regular gamers, not exclusively to professionals.[1]
Industry significance
Xtrfy represents a player-driven esports hardware model within the gaming peripherals industry. Unlike manufacturers that treat gaming as one category among many, Xtrfy built its identity around competitive gaming from its inception. Its trajectory illustrates the professionalization of gaming hardware, moving from professional player testing to esports equipment and finally to the consumer market.
The acquisition by CHERRY added a further dimension, combining Swedish esports expertise with German peripheral and component expertise to form the modern CHERRY XTRFY brand.
