History
Origins
The story of BlenderBottle begins with a relatively simple problem: protein shakes were difficult to mix without leaving lumps.
According to the company’s history, Steve Sorensen frequently traveled for work and was following a diet that involved protein shakes. Frustrated by the difficulty of mixing protein powder while traveling, he experimented with a simple piece of wire purchased from a hardware store. He formed the wire into what became the original BlenderBall® wire whisk.
Steve and his wife, Kim, recognized that the small wire whisk could be combined with a bottle to create a more effective portable mixing system. They subsequently founded BlenderBottle Company in 2000.
The concept was deceptively simple: instead of putting a conventional mechanical mixer inside a bottle, the user could place a free-moving wire whisk inside the container and shake it. The movement of the BlenderBall helps break up powder and distribute it throughout the liquid.
The BlenderBottle Classic
The company’s breakthrough product became the BlenderBottle Classic™, which established the characteristic format that would become closely associated with shaker cups.
BlenderBottle says the Classic was introduced in 2004 and subsequently became one of the most recognizable products in the shaker-cup category. The company later described the Classic as the world’s best-selling shaker cup.[1]
The product’s success helped transform the shaker bottle from a relatively basic piece of sports equipment into a recognizable consumer product category.
Expansion
After establishing the Classic, BlenderBottle expanded beyond its original shaker design. Its portfolio came to include products such as:
- Classic™ — the company’s original-style shaker.
- SportMixer® — a shaker designed around sports and active use.
- ProStak® — a shaker incorporating separate storage compartments for supplements, snacks and other items.
- GoStak® — modular containers for carrying powders, supplements and snacks.
- Radian® — a line emphasizing premium materials and insulated or glass construction.
- Pro Series™ — a more contemporary shaker line.
- Various hydration bottles, tumblers, accessories and replacement components.
The expansion reflected a broader strategy: BlenderBottle increasingly positioned itself not simply as a “protein shaker” company but as a fitness, hydration and active-lifestyle brand.
The BlenderBall®
The BlenderBall® is arguably the most important piece of BlenderBottle’s intellectual and product identity.
It is a small, free-moving wire whisk placed inside the bottle. When the bottle is shaken, the ball moves through the liquid and helps break up protein powder, powdered supplements and other ingredients.
The company states that its BlenderBall whisk is made from polished 316 stainless steel, sometimes described as surgical-grade stainless steel.
This mechanism became the defining difference between BlenderBottle and conventional bottles. Instead of relying solely on shaking a liquid inside a container, the BlenderBall creates an additional mechanical mixing action.
BlenderBottle has protected the technology and associated designs through numerous patents, designs and trademarks in the United States and internationally.
Classic™ Shaker
The Classic™ remains one of BlenderBottle’s flagship products.
The current Classic incorporates the company’s traditional BlenderBall mixing system while adding newer design features. According to the current product specification, the bottle includes:
- Rounded base intended to improve mixing
- BlenderBall® wire whisk
- SpoutGuard™ for covering the drinking spout
- Measurement markings
- Dishwasher-safe construction
- BPA- and phthalate-free materials
- Multiple capacity options, including 20 oz, 28 oz and 45 oz versions
The current product is therefore considerably more refined than the original shaker, while retaining the basic concept that made the brand famous.
Product philosophy
BlenderBottle’s product philosophy centers on portable convenience.
The company describes its mission as going beyond simply selling bottles, with an emphasis on simplifying everyday life and challenging conventional product designs.
This philosophy can be seen in the development of products such as ProStak. Rather than carrying a shaker and separate containers for supplements, the ProStak combines mixing and storage into one portable system.
In other words, the brand’s design philosophy can broadly be summarized as:
Identify a small everyday inconvenience → engineer a simple physical solution → integrate it into a portable consumer product.
Materials and manufacturing
BlenderBottle says its products are designed in the United States and manufactured in China. Its corporate offices are in Lehi, Utah.
Different product families use different materials. For example, BlenderBottle states that the Classic uses #2 HDPE and #5 polypropylene, while some SportMixer and GoStak products use BPA-free Eastman Tritan plastic.
The company also states that its products are BPA-free and that its products are protected by multiple U.S. and international patents.[1]
Branding
BlenderBottle’s branding is strongly associated with:
- Fitness
- Sports nutrition
- Protein supplementation
- Gym culture
- Hydration
- Convenience
- Portability
- Product innovation
The company underwent a significant branding update in 2013, including a new logo, packaging, marketing materials and website. At the time, the brand used the tagline “Mix It Up”, connecting the physical mixing function of the products with an energetic fitness-oriented lifestyle.
The brand’s visual identity has historically emphasized bold colors, athletic imagery and highly recognizable bottle silhouettes.
Corporate structure
Although the consumer-facing name remains BlenderBottle, the business is now part of Trove Brands.
Trove Brands, LLC is the corporate entity associated with BlenderBottle. BlenderBottle’s own current contest rules explicitly identify Trove Brands, LLC as the owner of the BlenderBottle brand.
The evolution can therefore be simplified as:
Steve & Kim Sorensen → BlenderBottle Company → broader Trove Brands organization
The Sorensen family remains closely associated with the business and its development.
Global presence
BlenderBottle has expanded substantially beyond the U.S. market.
The company’s current “About Us” information states that its products are available in more than 90 countries and more than 60,000 retail stores. It also says its U.S. team numbers more than 150 people, while its global operations help employ more than 1,000 people.[1]
This represents a substantial evolution from the company’s beginnings as a home-based operation in Utah.
Intellectual property
Intellectual property has played an important role in BlenderBottle’s business strategy.
The company maintains patents, design registrations, trademarks and trade dress associated with products and technologies including:
- BlenderBall®
- BlenderBottle®
- Classic™
- Classic™ lid
- ProStak®
- GoStak®
- Radian®
- SportMixer®
- SpoutGuard™
- Twist n’ Lock™
- Other product technologies and designs
The company has also pursued legal action to protect its patents, trademarks and product designs, illustrating the importance of proprietary product design to its competitive position.
Position in the shaker-bottle market
BlenderBottle is particularly significant because it helped standardize the modern protein-shaker format.
Before BlenderBottle’s rise, shaker cups were generally simple containers designed primarily for manually mixing powdered drinks. BlenderBottle’s combination of:
bottle + wire whisk + leak-resistant lid + measurement markings + portable design
became a highly recognizable formula.
The Classic’s distinctive form subsequently became influential throughout the sports-nutrition accessory market. BlenderBottle itself has described the Classic as a product that helped shape the appearance and design of competing shaker cups.
Consequently, BlenderBottle is not merely a bottle manufacturer. It is better understood as a company that helped establish the modern sports-nutrition shaker as a mainstream consumer product.
Target customers
BlenderBottle’s traditional core customer is the fitness and sports-nutrition consumer, particularly people who consume:
- Protein powder
- Pre-workout drinks
- Post-workout supplements
- Meal-replacement powders
- Other powdered nutritional products
However, its product range has expanded the potential audience to include runners, travelers, outdoor enthusiasts, students, office workers and general consumers interested in portable hydration.
Brand strengths
Several factors explain BlenderBottle’s longevity:
1. Simple product innovation
The original insight was extremely simple: a loose wire whisk could dramatically improve mixing. The company built an entire product category around that concept.
2. Strong product recognition
The Classic’s shape and BlenderBall have become strongly associated with the BlenderBottle name.
3. Broad distribution
The brand has developed an extensive retail and international distribution network, reaching tens of thousands of stores.
4. Intellectual-property protection
Patents, trademarks and trade dress provide important protection around key aspects of the brand’s products.
5. Product diversification
BlenderBottle gradually expanded from one core shaker concept into a broader portfolio of hydration, storage and active-lifestyle products.
Brand significance
From a business and design perspective, BlenderBottle is an interesting example of incremental innovation producing a major consumer brand.
The underlying invention wasn’t technologically complicated. The BlenderBall is essentially a shaped piece of stainless-steel wire. What made it commercially powerful was the recognition that a very small engineering improvement could solve an everyday problem for millions of consumers.
The company then reinforced that invention through:
product design + branding + patents + retail distribution + fitness culture.
That combination transformed a simple mixing accessory into an internationally recognized brand.
