History
Coach was founded in 1941 by six leather artisans working in a Manhattan loft. Inspired by the softness and durability of a well-used baseball glove, the craftsmen developed a unique glove-tanned leather that became one of the brand’s defining materials.
In 1961, entrepreneurs Miles Cahn and Lillian Cahn purchased the company. Under their leadership, Coach expanded beyond a small leather workshop into a nationally recognized leather goods manufacturer.
A major turning point came in 1962, when designer Bonnie Cashin joined Coach as its first lead designer. Cashin introduced vibrant colors, practical silhouettes, exterior pockets, and the now-iconic brass turn-lock hardware, helping transform Coach into a modern American fashion brand.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Coach rapidly expanded through department stores and standalone boutiques. Under creative director Reed Krakoff (1996–2013), the brand evolved from a traditional leather company into a global lifestyle brand.
Since 2013, creative director Stuart Vevers has modernized Coach by blending vintage Americana with contemporary fashion, introducing collections that appeal to younger consumers while maintaining the brand’s heritage. [3]
