About CRESSI
Overview
CRESSI is an Italian family-owned manufacturer specialising in scuba diving, freediving, snorkelling, spearfishing, and swimming equipment. Established in Genoa, Italy, in 1946, it ranks among the world’s longest-operating specialist diving equipment companies. Its origins trace back to the late 1930s when brothers Egidio Cressi and Giovanni Battista “Nanni” Cressi began handcrafting masks and spearguns.1
The brand remains notable for retaining family ownership while growing from a small Genoese workshop into an international watersports label. CRESSI emphasises in-house product development, manufacturing expertise, sea testing, and long-term reliability.2

History
Origins in Genoa
The history of CRESSI predates its formal incorporation, beginning in 1938. Driven by a passion for the sea, Egidio and Nanni Cressi started producing their own underwater gear because existing products were inadequate for their needs.
Their early workshop was essentially a home-based operation in Genoa where they handcrafted diving masks and spearguns. Historical accounts note that some of the earliest masks were constructed using recycled inner tubes.4
Although Egidio had previously worked in banking, he eventually dedicated himself entirely to the underwater world. The brothers adopted a practical methodology—using equipment in the sea, identifying weaknesses, and redesigning accordingly—which became a foundational element of the CRESSI philosophy.5
1943–1946: From workshop to company
One of the earliest significant products was the Sirena mask, handcrafted in 1943. With various updates, it remained in the company catalogue for over three decades.6
CRESSI was formally established in Genoa in 1946. In the post-war period, the company focused primarily on equipment for underwater fishing and diving.7
In 1947, the brand introduced the Aro AR47 oxygen rebreather, demonstrating an early interest in technical diving equipment.8
Major innovations
CRESSI holds historical significance due to several influential product introductions that shaped the diving industry.
Pinocchio mask
In 1952, CRESSI launched the Pinocchio mask, which featured an integrated nose pocket to facilitate equalisation. It became one of the company’s most renowned products, remaining in the catalogue for decades and is described by CRESSI as one of the most successful diving masks in history.9
Rondine fins
The Rondine fins were introduced in 1953. Company records identify them as a pioneering floating-fin design that subsequently influenced the development of modern diving fins.10
Regulators
CRESSI also contributed to the evolution of scuba regulators. The Polaris 4 Professional regulator, released in the 1960s, utilised a two-stage configuration designed for robustness and low maintenance requirements.11
Optical diving masks
In 1965, CRESSI opened one of the first workshops specialising in optical masks, enabling divers with visual impairments to use corrective lenses within their underwater masks.
Early buoyancy-compensation technology
A significant milestone occurred in 1970 with the introduction of Equi-Vest. CRESSI describes this as the world’s first manufacturer-produced jacket-type system integrated with a scuba cylinder and supplied with air from the regulator’s first stage. It is regarded as an early precursor to the modern BCD (buoyancy compensator device).
Current product portfolio
CRESSI distinguishes itself through a product portfolio that spans a broad range of aquatic activities.

Design philosophy
CRESSI positions itself as a technical equipment manufacturer with a deep connection to the sea rather than a fashion or lifestyle brand. Its philosophy centres on three core principles:
Manufacturing
The company prioritises manufacturing expertise, preferring to develop products internally from initial design through detailed engineering and production.16
Testing in real conditions
Considerable emphasis is placed on testing products in the sea rather than relying solely on laboratory or theoretical development. This approach dates back to the founders, who personally used and modified their equipment based on underwater experiences.
Evolution rather than novelty
CRESSI tends to maintain successful product concepts while continuously updating them. For instance, the Pinocchio mask has been part of the brand’s story for generations, while modern products like the Quantum mask incorporate newer technologies.17
Notable products
Several products are closely associated with the CRESSI name, illustrating the evolution from early handcrafted gear to modern digitally integrated equipment:18
- Sirena: One of the company’s earliest masks, dating to 1943.
- Pinocchio: The iconic nose-pocket mask introduced in 1952.
- Rondine: A historically significant fin design from 1953.
- Polaris: A regulator series linked to CRESSI’s regulator technology development.
- Equi-Vest: An early buoyancy-compensation jacket from 1970.
- Quantum: A modern mask focusing on field of vision and anti-fog performance.
- Cartesio: A contemporary dive computer.
- Michelangelo: A modern dive computer aimed at recreational diving.
Italian identity and global presence
Despite its international reach, Genoa and the Ligurian coast remain central to the identity of CRESSI. The region’s maritime tradition provided the founders with a natural testing environment, and the company frequently links its engineering culture to this Mediterranean heritage.19
CRESSI states that it continues to manufacture a significant proportion of its products in Italy while maintaining an international organisation to serve customers globally.20 Today, the brand sells products internationally with offices and commercial operations serving various markets. Its comprehensive range covers practically the entire recreational underwater ecosystem, from scuba and freediving to swimming and watersports, positioning it as one of the few companies capable of manufacturing across all these categories.
Ownership and family leadership
CRESSI remains entirely family-owned, tracing its leadership through successive generations. Company materials identify Antonio Cressi as a key modern leader and Marco Cressi as part of the third generation involved in management.21
This ownership structure supports the brand’s positioning as a business where history, manufacturing culture, and product development remain interconnected, distinguishing it from conglomerate-owned competitors.
Brand image and reputation
The modern brand identity of CRESSI is associated with Italian heritage, technical engineering, reliability, innovation, and practical sea testing. In the early 2020s, the company underwent a visual and strategic refresh intended to modernise its appearance while affirming that its fundamental mission has remained unchanged since 1946.
CRESSI is generally positioned as a mainstream-to-premium specialist watersports manufacturer rather than a luxury fashion brand. Its diverse price points cater to a wide customer base:
- Beginners: Snorkelling sets, swimming goggles, and entry-level dive equipment.
- Recreational divers: Masks, fins, regulators, BCDs, and computers.
- Experienced divers: Technical-oriented equipment and high-end regulators/computers.
- Freedivers and spearfishers: Specialised long fins, masks, wetsuits, and accessories.
80th Anniversary
The year 2026 marks the 80th anniversary of CRESSI. The company is using this milestone to highlight the continuity between its early Genoese workshop and its current international operations, showcasing the progression from handmade masks to advanced underwater products.
To commemorate the occasion, CRESSI introduced “Dive Yellow,” a limited-edition collection referencing the company’s history and its traditional use of yellow in its visual identity.
Historical significance
From a historical perspective, CRESSI emerged during the formative years of modern recreational scuba diving. Its formal founding in 1946 followed closely after Jacques Cousteau and Émile Gagnan patented the Aqua-Lung in 1943.
Consequently, CRESSI has existed throughout virtually the entire history of modern recreational scuba diving. Its development is intertwined with the evolution of spearfishing, freediving, snorkelling, recreational scuba, buoyancy control, masks, fins, regulators, dive computers, and modern aquatic sports.
Summary
CRESSI is an 80-year-old Italian underwater-equipment company that evolved from two brothers crafting masks and spearguns in Genoa into a global, family-owned watersports manufacturer. Its primary strengths lie in its heritage, engineering experience, extensive product range, strong ties to freediving and spearfishing, and continuous family ownership.
The brand’s enduring philosophy dictates that equipment should be designed for actual water use, tested in real conditions, and continuously improved—a principle established by Egidio and Nanni CRESSI in the 1930s that remains central to the company today.
