History
Foundation (1986)
Edimax was established in June 1986 in Taipei under the original name Edimax International Co., Ltd. The company began with paid-in capital of NT$5 million, focusing initially on computer peripherals and hardware such as interface cards, controller cards, keyboards, and related components.[1]
Transition to Networking (1990s)
The company gradually shifted its focus toward the networking sector. In 1991, it introduced an NE2000-compatible network interface card (NIC), marking a pivotal step towards its future specialisation. By 1994, Edimax had formally entered the networking industry. The following year, it renamed itself Edimax Technology Co., Ltd. and established a dedicated R&D department for networking technology, while also beginning to market products internationally under the EDIMAX brand.[2]
Manufacturing and Expansion
A significant transformation occurred in 1998 when Edimax established a manufacturing facility in Taiwan’s Wugu Industrial Park and added an automated surface-mount technology (SMT) production line. This move signalled a transition from trading to manufacturing and technology development. During this period, the company obtained ISO 9001 certification and established its U.S. subsidiary.[1]
Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, Edimax expanded globally through subsidiaries and offices across Europe, North America, and Asia, developing a distribution network covering Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Australia.[2]
Public Listing
Edimax is publicly traded on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under stock code 3047. Financial documentation records the company’s listing as commencing in 2001.[1]
Products and Solutions
Edimax has expanded its portfolio significantly over several decades, categorised broadly into the following segments.
Consumer Networking
Historically well known for home and small office products, Edimax offers Wi-Fi routers, wireless adapters, range extenders, Ethernet switches, Powerline networking products, network adapters, access points, and smart-home networking devices. These products are typically positioned around ease of deployment and practical connectivity.[2]
Business and Enterprise Networking
The Edimax Pro family addresses professional requirements, including enterprise access points, managed switches, PoE equipment, wireless infrastructure, and centralised network management systems. For instance, Edimax Pro access points are designed to integrate with centralised management functionality suitable for SMB and enterprise deployments.[2]
Ethernet and PoE
Wired networking remains a core component of the portfolio, comprising Ethernet switches, Gigabit networking gear, PoE switches and injectors, media converters, and industrial Ethernet equipment. This allows Edimax to compete in infrastructure-oriented networking beyond consumer Wi-Fi.
Surveillance
The company has developed IP and network cameras alongside related technologies, historically targeting home, small business, and surveillance applications.[2]
Smart Home and IoT
Edimax entered the smart home market with smart plugs, connected devices, environmental sensors, and home automation products controlled via smartphones. Its EdiLife ecosystem integrated networking with smart home applications and received Taiwan Excellence recognition.[1]
AIoT and IIoT
Recently, Edimax has emphasised AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) and IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things). This reflects a shift from connecting computers and phones to integrating people, devices, machines, sensors, networks, and data. Current solutions target smart networking for industrial, business, and home environments.[2]
Product Portfolio Structure
The EDIMAX portfolio encompasses the following categories:
- Consumer Networking: Wi-Fi Routers, Wi-Fi Adapters, Range Extenders, Ethernet Switches, Powerline Networking

Corporate Identity and Philosophy
Edimax distinguishes itself through a historical emphasis on R&D, manufacturing, and proprietary branding rather than functioning solely as a generic electronics label. Corporate values include quality service, professional R&D, and innovation.[1] The company’s evolution from selling computer hardware to developing proprietary networking technology places it within Taiwan’s broader technology-manufacturing ecosystem.
QSII Philosophy
Edimax has historically operated under the QSII concept, representing:
- Quality
- Service
- Innovation
- Integrity
These principles underpin a brand identity centred on reliable connectivity, practical technology, and accessible networking products.[1]
Awards and Recognition
Edimax has received numerous accolades for technology and product design.
Taiwan Excellence
Products have received continuous Taiwan Excellence recognition from 2016 to 2025, accumulating 32 awards during that period.[1]
International Design Awards
Specific products have garnered international acclaim; for example, the Edimax Pro CAP1750 enterprise access point received a Red Dot award for product design. Additional recognition includes iF Design Awards and COMPUTEX d&i Awards.[1]
Brand Value
In 2014 and 2015, Interbrand named Edimax one of the Top 35 Most Valuable International Taiwanese Brands, evaluating the overall brand strength rather than individual products.[1]
Global Presence
While headquartered in Taiwan, Edimax maintains an international footprint with offices, subsidiaries, distributors, and partners across multiple regions, including the United States, Europe, China, India, Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Middle East. Recent corporate descriptions cite more than 300 partners worldwide providing sales and technical services.[1]
Market Position
Edimax operates as a specialist networking company rather than a general consumer electronics giant. Its strengths lie in Wi-Fi equipment, networking adapters, Ethernet switches, wireless access points, SMB networking, PoE, and IoT connectivity. This positions it distinctly from competitors such as TP-Link, D-Link, Netgear, ASUS, or Ubiquiti.
The portfolio spans both consumer/SOHO and professional/industrial applications, offering a broader technology scope than brands focused exclusively on home Wi-Fi.[2]
Edimax Pro
Edimax Pro is the dedicated professional product family designed for SMEs, offices, schools, hotels, retail environments, and enterprise wireless networks. Key features distinguishing it from consumer equipment include centralised management, VLAN support, PoE, enterprise-grade wireless functionality, and scalability. The Network Management Suite enables centralised control of multiple access points without requiring separate hardware controllers.[1]
Evolution of Connectivity
Edimax’s chronological development mirrors the broader evolution of connectivity:
- 1986: Computer peripherals
- 1990s: Network adapters and networking
- 2000s: Wi-Fi and network infrastructure
- 2010s: Smart home and IP surveillance
- 2020s: AIoT, IIoT, and industrial networking
While the types of connected devices have changed, the fundamental objective of connecting systems and devices has remained consistent.
Manufacturing and Development
Edimax employs a vertically integrated approach encompassing design, R&D, manufacturing, marketing, distribution, and technical support. The establishment of automated SMT production lines in 1998 marked a definitive move into manufacturing, allowing the company to maintain control over product development and branding.[1]
Headquarters and Corporate Structure
Edimax relocated to its current headquarters in Neihu, Taipei, in 2016, coinciding with its 30th anniversary. Neihu is a key technology and business district in Taipei.
The principal entity is Edimax Technology Co., Ltd. International expansion led to the establishment of subsidiaries including Edimax USA, Edimax Netherlands, and Edimax BVI. The broader Edimax Group has diversified beyond traditional retail networking into enterprise, industrial, and telecommunications activities.[1]
Strategic Direction
As of 2026, Edimax’s strategy extends beyond traditional routers and adapters to emphasise Smart Networking + AIoT + IIoT. Solutions now target homes, businesses, industrial environments, and connected infrastructure, addressing the modern requirement to connect IoT sensors, industrial equipment, cameras, access-control systems, and cloud services rather than merely linking PCs to the internet.[2]
