Farm Fresh was incorporated as The Holstein Milk Company Sdn. Bhd. on 24 March 2010. It subsequently adopted the name Farm Fresh Berhad in 2021 prior to becoming a public company.[1]
History
Origins
The development of Farm Fresh is closely linked to co-founder Loi Tuan Ee. Raised in Perak with an interest in agriculture, Loi spent years in the corporate and packaging sectors before transitioning to farming. He initially experimented with various agricultural ventures involving goats and dragon fruit before focusing on dairy.[2]
In 2009, Loi and his brother, Loi Tuan Kin, established a dairy business by importing 60 Holstein Jersey cows from Australia and setting up a farm in Mawai, Johor. Their objective was to produce fresh dairy products locally rather than relying on reconstituted or powdered milk, laying the foundation for what would become Farm Fresh.
Early challenges
Establishing a commercial dairy operation in Malaysia presented significant hurdles due to the tropical climate, which differs markedly from traditional dairy regions. Logistics, financing, and distribution also posed difficulties for a nascent company. Consequently, Farm Fresh invested heavily in cattle genetics, farm management, and production systems adapted specifically to local conditions.[2]
The “grass-to-glass” concept
A defining competitive characteristic of Farm Fresh is its “grass-to-glass” business model. Rather than focusing solely on manufacturing or marketing, the company participates in multiple stages of the value chain:
Cows → Farms → Fresh milk → Processing → Packaging → Distribution → Consumers
Operations broadly cover:
- Dairy farming
- Animal breeding and herd management
- Milking
- Milk processing
- Product development
- Packaging
- Warehousing
- Distribution
- Retail and home dealers
- Exports
This vertical integration provides greater control over quality, supply, production, and distribution, which the company cites as a primary competitive advantage.[4]
Farming operations
From its original Mawai farm, Farm Fresh has expanded significantly. Its 2025 annual report described the group as operating seven farms and five processing facilities across Malaysia, Australia, and the Philippines, with a portfolio of 216 SKUs across multiple categories.[6]
While Malaysian operations include the rearing of both dairy cows and goats, Australian operations focus on dairy cows as well as products such as milk, yoghurt, butter, jams, and sauces.[3]
Cattle genetics
Farm Fresh has developed expertise in cattle genetics, including ownership of gene banks associated with the Australian Friesian Sahiwal (AFS) breed. This breed is particularly relevant for maintaining productivity in hot and humid tropical environments. The company combines genetics with specialized animal husbandry and farm management techniques to improve herd health and milk yield.

Brand positioning
Farm Fresh positions itself around freshness and natural dairy. Historically, a key differentiator was its emphasis on fresh milk over products based primarily on powdered or reconstituted milk. Many products are also positioned around the absence of preservatives, artificial colourings, and flavourings.[4]
This positioning can be summarised as: Fresh + local farming + natural ingredients + direct control of the supply chain. This approach has helped distinguish Farm Fresh from multinational dairy companies operating in the region.
Distribution network
Farm Fresh utilises a multi-channel distribution system that extends beyond supermarkets:
- Hypermarkets and supermarkets
- Convenience stores
- Mini-markets
- Cafés and food-service businesses
- HORECA (hotels, restaurants, and cafés)
- E-commerce
- Regional distributors
- Home dealers
A distinctive element of its strategy is the Home Dealer Programme, which engages local entrepreneurs as stockists and agents. This model facilitates access to suburban and rural consumers while providing income opportunities for micro-entrepreneurs. In FY2025, this network generated RM47 million in gross income for stockists and dealers.
International expansion
While fundamentally a Malaysian company, Farm Fresh has increasingly pursued regional ambitions. As of 2025, it operated five processing facilities across Malaysia, Australia, and the Philippines.[6]
The company also sells products in Singapore and has targeted broader Southeast Asian expansion. In FY2025, Farm Fresh entered the Philippine market with a new production facility, marking a significant step in its regional strategy. By 2026, the company had also highlighted expansion into Cambodia, demonstrating an intent to build a regional dairy footprint.
Listing on Bursa Malaysia
Farm Fresh became a publicly listed company in 2022. Its IPO was priced at RM1.35 per share, and it debuted on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia on 22 March 2022. At listing, the company had an approximate market capitalisation of RM2.5 billion, making it one of the significant Malaysian IPOs of that period.[5]
Trading under the ticker FFB (5306), the listing provided capital for expansion while subjecting the company to increased public scrutiny regarding financial performance, governance, and sustainability.
Financial growth
Since listing, Farm Fresh has experienced substantial growth. Revenue increased from approximately RM501.9 million in FY2022 to RM1.1157 billion in FY2026. Profit after tax rose from RM78.6 million in FY2022 to RM129.8 million in FY2026.[3]
| Financial year | Revenue | Profit after tax |
|---|---|---|
| FY2022 | RM501.9m | RM78.6m |
| FY2023 | RM629.7m | RM49.9m |
| FY2024 | RM810.4m | RM63.3m |
| FY2025 | RM981.2m | RM107.3m |
| FY2026 | RM1.116b | RM129.8m |
FY2026 marked a milestone as Farm Fresh exceeded RM1 billion in annual revenue for the first time.[3]
Sustainability
Sustainability is integral to Farm Fresh’s business strategy, encompassing several key areas:
Waste management
The company recycles farm dairy effluent and other operational waste.
Renewable energy
Farm Fresh has introduced biogas technology, using cow manure to generate renewable energy at its farms.[6]
Water conservation
Rainwater harvesting and groundwater systems are utilised to reduce dependence on municipal water supplies.
Packaging
The proportion of products using recyclable and sustainably sourced packaging has been increasing.
Animal welfare
Considerable emphasis is placed on animal husbandry and welfare. According to FY2025 sustainability reporting, Malaysian farms have achieved Certified Humane® accreditation.
Rural communities
Farms and processing facilities provide rural employment, while the home dealer system offers entrepreneurial opportunities to local communities.
Relationship with Khazanah Nasional
A significant chapter in the company’s growth involved Khazanah Nasional Berhad, Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund. Investment backed by Khazanah helped expand production capacity and establish the Muadzam Shah Farm in Pahang, which became fully operational in 2014.[3]
This support was critical given the substantial upfront investment required for land, cattle, infrastructure, milking systems, processing plants, refrigerated logistics, and distribution. Farm Fresh subsequently expanded through further acquisitions and investments in Malaysia and Australia.
Business strategy
Farm Fresh’s strategy rests on several pillars:
- Control the supply chain: The grass-to-glass model ensures oversight of the production process.
- Build a Malaysian brand: A strong identity as a homegrown dairy company distinguishes it from price-only competitors.
- Expand beyond milk: Progressive diversification into yoghurt, plant-based beverages, milk powder, butter, ice cream, sauces, and functional beverages.

- Develop a broader FMCG platform: Evolving from a dairy producer into a multi-category food and beverage company.
Competitive position
Operating in a market that includes major multinationals and imported brands, Farm Fresh relies on several key advantages:
- Vertical integration: Control over significant portions of the farm-to-consumer chain.
- Strong local brand recognition: A powerful identity as a homegrown Malaysian entity.
- Fresh-milk positioning: Differentiation from reconstituted or powdered milk products.
- Product innovation: Consistent introduction of new categories, including lactose-free milk, plant-based beverages, and functional products.[1]
