History
Faultless traces its origins to entrepreneur Major Thomas G. Beaham, who arrived in Kansas City in 1887. After acquiring a formula for a dry white laundry starch from Bosworth Manufacturing, he established the Faultless Starch Company.
The company’s first product, Faultless Dry White Starch, became popular because it eliminated the lengthy boiling process required by traditional starches, making laundry work easier for households during the late nineteenth century. [2]
Growth and Popularity
Faultless quickly became a well-known household name throughout the American Midwest and Southwest. Besides clothing care, consumers found many alternative uses for the starch, including:
-
Finishing lace and embroidery
-
Household textile care
-
Skin irritation treatment (historically)
-
Baby powder substitute (historically)
-
Bath powder (historically)
These additional uses contributed significantly to the brand’s early popularity. [1]
Faultless Starch Books
One of the brand’s most distinctive marketing campaigns involved the Faultless Starch Books, educational booklets attached to packages of starch during the late 1890s through the 1930s.
Sales representative John Nesbitt distributed these books throughout Texas and the Indian Territory. The booklets contained stories, reading lessons, and educational material, and historians note that many children learned to read using them when schoolbooks were scarce. Today these booklets are collectible historical items. [1]
Company Evolution
The original manufacturing plant in Kansas City’s West Bottoms was destroyed during the devastating 1903 flood and later rebuilt nearby.
