History
Founding and early years (1993–1999)
Finis was created from an idea developed by John Mix after he encountered a monofin while studying abroad in Austria. A monofin is a single-bladed swimming fin inspired by marine animal movement and is used to develop dolphin kicking technique and underwater propulsion.[2]
After Olympic swimmer Pablo Morales won the 100-metre butterfly gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, he and Mix reunited for a swim session where they discussed the potential of the monofin as a training tool. The two decided to create a company focused on improving swimming technique, leading to the formation of Finis in 1993.[1]
The company’s first product was the FINIS Monofin, followed by one of its most influential inventions: the Swimmer’s Snorkel. Introduced in the mid-1990s, the centre-mounted snorkel allowed swimmers to focus on body position, stroke mechanics, and technique without the distraction of breathing timing.[2]
Product Development and Innovation
Finis built its reputation by creating training products that addressed specific technical challenges in swimming.
Swimmer’s Snorkel
The FINIS Swimmer’s Snorkel became one of the company’s signature products. Unlike traditional snorkels used for diving, the swimming version places the tube in front of the face, allowing swimmers to maintain proper alignment while practising strokes. It became widely adopted by competitive swimmers and coaches.[2]
Tempo Trainer
The Tempo Trainer is an underwater electronic metronome designed to help swimmers control stroke rate and rhythm. It allows athletes to practise consistent pacing and improve efficiency.[2]
Zoomers Fins
Finis developed the Zoomers training fin line to help swimmers improve kick technique, leg strength, and propulsion.[2]
SwiMP3 and underwater audio technology
In 2005, Finis introduced the SwiMP3, one of the first underwater music players using bone conduction technology. The device allowed swimmers to hear audio underwater without traditional earphones.[2]
Agility Paddles
Finis introduced strapless hand paddles designed to encourage correct hand positioning and improve stroke mechanics. The Agility Paddle later received recognition for its design innovation, including a Red Dot Design Award.[2]
Smart Goggle
In 2021, Finis launched the Smart Goggle, a technology-focused swim goggle featuring a heads-up display that provides swimmers with real-time workout information such as distance and time while swimming.[2]

The company’s vision is to help more people enjoy swimming, from beginners learning water safety to elite athletes competing internationally.[2]

Finis products are commonly found in competitive swim programmes because many tools are designed specifically for instruction and skill development.[2]

Brand Identity
Name meaning
The name “Finis” has two symbolic meanings:
- Latin meaning: “the end” or “completion”
- Swimming reference: “fin,” representing the company’s first product, the monofin
The brand connects this idea with swimmers’ pursuit of personal goals and reaching their own “finish line.”[3]
Market Position
Finis occupies a unique position in the swimming industry. While brands such as Speedo and Arena are widely recognised for racing suits and competitive swimwear, Finis is particularly associated with technical training innovation.
Its reputation is built around:
- Coach-approved training tools
- Swimming technique education
- Engineering-based product design
- Accessibility for swimmers at all levels
