About Jockey
Jockey is an American apparel brand best known for its underwear, socks, sleepwear, loungewear, activewear, and casual clothing. Founded in 1876, Jockey has grown into one of the world’s most recognized innerwear brands, with products sold in more than 120 countries. The company is headquartered in Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA, and operates under Jockey International, Inc. [1]
History
Jockey traces its origins to S.T. Cooper & Sons, a hosiery business established in 1876 by Samuel Thrall Cooper in St. Joseph, Michigan. The company initially manufactured high-quality socks for lumber workers, addressing the need for more durable and comfortable hosiery. As demand grew, the business expanded into underwear manufacturing and relocated to Kenosha, Wisconsin. [2]
In 1900, the company became Cooper Underwear Company, focusing on men’s undergarments. One of its earliest innovations was the Kenosha Klosed Krotch union suit, a patented closed-crotch design that became highly successful in the early 20th century. [3]
The company’s defining moment came in 1934, when sales executive Arthur Kneibler was inspired by a postcard depicting a bikini-style swimsuit worn in Europe. This inspired the creation of the Jockey brief, which introduced a revolutionary Y-shaped front fly and offered greater support and comfort than traditional underwear. [4]
The Jockey Y-Front brief debuted in 1935 and became an instant commercial success. On its first day at Marshall Field & Company in Chicago, the initial stock sold out within hours, establishing Jockey as a household name in men’s underwear. [5]
The company changed its name from Cooper’s, Inc. to Jockey Menswear, Inc. in 1971, and then to Jockey International, Inc. in 1972, reflecting the global recognition of the Jockey brand. [6]
