History
Foundation and textile origins
The history of Kowa began in 1894 when Kanesaburo Hattori established the Hattori Kanesaburo Wholesale Store in Nagoya. The enterprise originally traded in cotton fabrics, including Chita cotton and tie-dyed products.[1]
In 1912, the business was reorganised as Hattori & Co., Ltd. The company subsequently expanded beyond textile trading into manufacturing, establishing a cotton-fabric factory in Nagoya in 1914 followed by spinning operations. It also developed an early international orientation, opening its first overseas representative office in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1935.[1]
Creation of the Kowa identity
A significant turning point occurred in 1939 when the trading division was separated from the spinning division. The trading entity became Kaneka Hattori & Co., the direct predecessor of today’s Kowa Company.[1]
The name “Kowa” was adopted as part of the corporate identity in 1945. According to official company records, this name embodied hopes for Japan’s post-war reconstruction and prosperity. During the post-war period, Kowa initiated a major diversification process.[1]
Expansion into optics and pharmaceuticals
Kowa entered the optical industry in 1946 through Kowa Optical Works, initially manufacturing eyeglass lenses and opera glasses before expanding into projection lenses, spotting scopes, and telescopes.[1]
In 1947, the company established Kowa Chemical Works, marking its entry into the pharmaceutical sector. This division eventually became one of the organisation’s most critical business areas. In 1949, Kowa launched COLGEN KOWA, its first cold medicine, which became one of the most recognisable consumer healthcare products in Japan. The portfolio subsequently grew to include Q&P KOWA, CABAGIN KOWA, UNA KOWA, KERATINAMIN KOWA, and VANTELIN KOWA.[1]
In 1960, the company officially changed its name to Kowa Company, Ltd., establishing the corporate title used today.[1]
Major business areas
Pharmaceuticals and healthcare
Pharmaceuticals remain a defining pillar of Kowa. The company develops and manufactures both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medicines, with a healthcare portfolio covering gastrointestinal conditions, pain and inflammation, dermatological issues, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, and ophthalmology.[1]
Historically significant consumer brands include:
- COLGEN KOWA: Cold and allergy-related medicines
- CABAGIN KOWA: Gastrointestinal medicine
- VANTELIN KOWA: Topical analgesic and anti-inflammatory products
- UNA KOWA: Anti-itch products
- KERATINAMIN KOWA: Urea-containing dermatological products
- Q&P KOWA: Healthcare and vitamin products
In the prescription pharmaceutical space, Kowa has marketed products such as LIVALO for hypercholesterolemia and PARMODIA (pemafibrate) for dyslipidemia.[1]
Ophthalmology
Ophthalmology represents a key intersection of Kowa’s optical and medical device expertise. The company has developed diagnostic technologies including retinal cameras, launching the Kowa RC retinal camera in 1962. Later innovations included the Laser Flare Cell Meter FC-1000.[1]
Kowa also operates in ophthalmic pharmaceuticals; in 2014, it launched GLANATEC, a treatment for glaucoma and ocular hypertension. This combination of pharmaceuticals, diagnostic equipment, and optical technology distinguishes Kowa within the sector.[1]
Optical technology
Dating back to 1946, Kowa’s optical activities have encompassed spotting scopes, binoculars, lenses, cameras, imaging technologies, ophthalmic equipment, and industrial machine-vision systems.[1]
A notable milestone was the launch of Kowa’s first spotting scope in 1952. Originally developed for shooting-sports observation, the product gained international recognition and was used during the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. Today, the technology portfolio extends to vision systems, factory automation, and security-related vision equipment.[1]
Trading business
Unlike many contemporary pharmaceutical firms, Kowa retains a substantial general trading business rooted in its nineteenth-century origins as a textile wholesaler. Operations cover textiles, machinery, construction materials, chemicals, commodities, import and export, domestic distribution, and intermediate trading.[1]
This dual identity means Kowa functions partly as a traditional Japanese trading company and partly as a manufacturer and technology firm.
Industrial and machine-vision technology
Kowa’s modern technology activities extend beyond traditional optics to include factory automation, security vision units, robot-system integration, optical hardware development, camera and lens technology, embedded systems, software, and AI-related development. This reflects an evolution from original optical-engineering capabilities toward modern industrial imaging and automation.[1]
Textiles and lifestyle
Textiles remain part of Kowa’s historical DNA. Although no longer primarily known as a textile manufacturer, the company maintains businesses associated with textiles and lifestyle products. In 2003, it launched TENERITA, an organic-cotton lifestyle brand, demonstrating how historical textile expertise has been adapted for newer consumer-oriented ventures.[1]
Hospitality
Kowa has diversified into the hospitality industry, acquiring Nagoya Kanko Hotel in 1999. The company subsequently developed luxury hospitality activities under the ESPACIO brand. In 2019, Kowa opened ESPACIO THE JEWEL OF WAIKIKI in Hawaii, its first overseas super-luxury hotel.[1]
Environment and energy
In recent years, Kowa has emphasised health and the environment as strategic themes. Current activities include energy-saving and energy-generation solutions, environmentally friendly architecture, and green-energy initiatives. The company is exploring areas such as green hydrogen and ammonia while developing businesses around sustainability and “Planetary Health.”[1]
Brand identity
Kowa functions as both a corporate name and a consumer-facing brand. For consumers, particularly in Asian markets, the name is closely associated with healthcare products such as COLGEN KOWA, CABAGIN KOWA, VANTELIN KOWA, and UNA KOWA. At the corporate level, however, the Kowa name represents a diversified group spanning health, optics, technology, trading, lifestyle, and environmental sectors rather than solely a pharmaceutical manufacturer.[1]
Frog mascot
One of Kowa’s most enduring branding elements is its frog mascot, which first appeared in a newspaper advertisement in 1949 and became strongly associated with COLGEN KOWA. The mascot celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2009 and remains a distinctive symbol of Kowa’s consumer healthcare identity.[1]
International presence
Although fundamentally Japanese, Kowa has maintained an international presence since the early twentieth century. Following the establishment of its first overseas office in Bombay in 1935, the company expanded into Europe, Asia, and North America.[1]
Key international milestones include:
- Kowa Europe GmbH: Established in 1986
- Kowa Asia Ltd.: Established in 1989
- Kowa Research Institute, Inc.: Established in the United States in 1997
- Kowa Pharmaceuticals America, Inc.: Established following the acquisition of ProEthic Pharmaceuticals in 2008
Kowa operates internationally through a combination of subsidiaries, research organisations, trading operations, and manufacturing businesses.[1]
Corporate philosophy and strategy
Kowa describes its modern management direction as centred on “Health and Environment,” aiming to contribute to a prosperous society while pursuing sustainability. This strategy unifies diverse business units under two overarching themes:[1]
- Health: Pharmaceuticals, OTC medicines, medical devices, ophthalmology, optical technology, and self-care.
- Environment: Green energy, energy-saving technologies, green hydrogen and ammonia, sustainable architecture, and planetary health initiatives.
This framework gives the modern Kowa Group a strategic identity considerably broader than its historical reputation as a pharmaceutical and optical manufacturer suggests.[1]
Kowa today
Kowa marked its 130th anniversary in 2024. Today, Kowa Company, Ltd. serves as the core of the Kowa Group, combining trading activities with manufacturing, R&D, and technology businesses. The group’s current portfolio spans:[1]
