History
Founding and early years
Kwikset was established in 1946 by entrepreneurs Adolf Schoepe and Karl Reinhard. The company’s first significant innovation was a tubular lock design created to make residential lock installation faster and simpler. The name “Kwikset” was selected to highlight this quick-installation concept. The product launched during a period of rapid post-war housing construction in the United States, which generated strong demand for affordable, reliable, and easy-to-install residential hardware.[1]
In 1948, Kwikset built a manufacturing facility to serve the expanding post-war housing market. By 1957, it had become a subsidiary of American Hardware Corporation (AHC). While AHC focused heavily on commercial and industrial locksets, Kwikset concentrated on the residential sector. The company states that it became the number-one manufacturer of residential locksets during this era and has retained a leading position since.
Key innovations and ownership changes
A notable early milestone occurred in 1958 with the introduction of the distinctive “K” key design. During this period, Kwikset also developed a plastic coating for brass and bronze-finished locksets, helping to establish the combination of security hardware and decorative finishes that remains central to the brand’s identity.
The brand subsequently passed through several corporate owners. American Hardware Corporation merged with Emhart Manufacturing Company in 1964, bringing Kwikset into the Emhart organisation. In 1989, Black & Decker acquired Emhart Corporation, including the Kwikset business, and continued to expand its residential lockset range under the Hardware & Home Improvement division.[1]
During the 1990s, Kwikset moved beyond traditional entry-level residential locks. In 1992, it launched the Titan product line targeting the higher-quality and higher-security segment of the residential market. In 1998, Titan introduced a remote keyless-entry deadbolt and handleset, establishing Kwikset’s presence in the emerging electronic lock category.[2]
Modern era and smart locks
In 2002, Kwikset introduced Kwik-Install technology, which used pre-installed screws to simplify lock installation. The company also reorganised its offerings around specific security and style-oriented families, increasingly integrating electronic access technologies with traditional mechanical locks.
In 2012, Spectrum Brands Holdings acquired Stanley Black & Decker’s Hardware & Home Improvement Group for approximately $1.4 billion, adding Kwikset to a portfolio that included Weiser, Baldwin, National Hardware, and Pfister.
Kwikset played a significant role in the transition from keyed locks to smart locks. In 2013, it introduced Kevo, a Bluetooth-enabled smart deadbolt developed with UniKey Technologies that allowed smartphones to function as digital keys and featured touch-to-open functionality.[1] The company expanded into Wi-Fi-connected locks in 2019 with the Halo smart lock range, enabling users to control and monitor locks via the Kwikset app without a separate smart-home hub. In 2020, Halo Touch added fingerprint recognition to the Wi-Fi smart lock lineup.
Kwikset marked its 80th anniversary in 2026, tracing its history from the original 1946 tubular lock to modern connected home security products.
Products
Kwikset offers both traditional mechanical door hardware and electronic or connected security products.
Mechanical locks
Traditional products include:
- Deadbolts
- Door knobs
- Door levers
- Handlesets
- Security sets
- Light-commercial hardware
- Padlocks
- Replacement parts and accessories
These items are available in numerous architectural styles and finishes, allowing the hardware to serve as both a security measure and a visible element of interior and exterior design.
SmartKey Security
SmartKey Security is one of Kwikset’s most prominent technologies. It allows owners to re-key a compatible lock without replacing the entire cylinder, which is useful when moving into a new property, losing a key, changing tenants, or updating access permissions. SmartKey remains a core technology in the brand’s residential deadbolt portfolio.[1]
Electronic and smart locks
SmartCode is Kwikset’s electronic keypad lock family. Compatible models allow users to enter a programmed access code instead of using a physical key, and certain versions integrate with smart-home systems. This category represents the brand’s shift from conventional mechanical security toward electronic access control.
Kevo, introduced in 2013, was a pioneering smart lock that utilised Bluetooth and smartphone technology for touch-based unlocking, electronic key sharing, and activity notifications.[1]
Halo is the brand’s family of connected Wi-Fi smart locks designed for remote monitoring and control via the Kwikset app. Unlike earlier smart-home products, Halo connects directly to a home Wi-Fi network without requiring a separate hub. The range includes keypad and touchscreen models, as well as Halo Touch, which uses fingerprint authentication.
The current portfolio combines mechanical hardware with smart locks featuring SmartKey Security, Wi-Fi and Matter compatibility (including Halo Select), and other connected-home technologies.
Brand positioning
Kwikset occupies a distinct position in the residential lock market by combining three primary categories:
- Security: Traditional and electronic locks designed to protect residential entry points.
- Convenience: Features such as SmartKey re-keying, keypad entry, fingerprint access, and smartphone control reduce reliance on physical keys.
- Design: A wide variety of shapes, architectural styles, and finishes positions door hardware as part of a home’s overall aesthetic rather than solely as security equipment.[1]
This approach enables Kwikset to serve homeowners, renters, builders, remodelers, and property managers, distinguishing it from brands focused exclusively on high-security commercial applications.
Manufacturing and distribution
Kwikset has strong historical ties to Southern California. Founded in Los Angeles in 1946, the company has maintained its presence in the region, with headquarters in Lake Forest, California, since 2001.
Products are distributed through retailers, distributors, and online channels. Kwikset states that its products are sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Australia.
Corporate ownership
Kwikset is a brand rather than an independent publicly traded company. Its corporate lineage is summarised as follows:
Kwikset → American Hardware Corporation → Emhart → Black & Decker → Spectrum Brands → ASSA ABLOY
The most recent major change occurred when ASSA ABLOY acquired Spectrum Brands’ Hardware and Home Improvement business. Current corporate information identifies Kwikset as part of ASSA ABLOY’s Hardware & Home Improvement division. Although ownership and organisational structure have changed multiple times, the consumer-facing Kwikset name remains prominent.

Significance in the lock industry
Kwikset’s historical importance stems partly from making residential locks easier and faster to manufacture and install. Its original tubular lock concept was particularly well-suited to the expanding American housing market of the post-war era.
Over subsequent decades, the brand evolved alongside changing consumer expectations, progressing from mechanical keys to easier installation, higher security, keyless entry, electronic locks, smartphone access, and connected smart-home security. This trajectory reflects the company’s consistent adaptation of traditional residential door locks to new technologies while maintaining a focus on mass-market residential use.
Brand identity
Kwikset’s identity is broadly defined as residential security made convenient and accessible. Unlike brands focused primarily on commercial access control or specialised high-security applications, Kwikset has historically concentrated on the everyday front door. Product development addresses questions such as installation ease, re-keying capability, keyless entry for family members, remote control, smart-home integration, and aesthetic compatibility with home design. This consumer-oriented approach is a defining characteristic of the brand.[1]
Kwikset today
As of 2026, Kwikset remains a major residential door hardware brand under ASSA ABLOY’s Hardware & Home Improvement organisation. Its portfolio ranges from basic mechanical hardware to sophisticated connected smart locks. Current positioning increasingly centres on the smart home while maintaining a substantial traditional lock business. The company highlights SmartKey Security, smart locks, Halo Select with Wi-Fi and Matter, Microban-treated hardware, knobs, handlesets, levers, electronic locks, and other residential hardware.
Kwikset is an 80-year-old American residential security brand that began by making mechanical locks quicker to install and has evolved into a comprehensive home-access brand encompassing traditional door hardware, re-keyable locks, electronic keypads, fingerprint locks, and connected smart locks.
