History
1987–1999: From manufacturing to a recognizable brand
Lilanz traces its origins to 1987, when the Wang brothers established a men’s clothing manufacturing and wholesale business in Fujian. Although initially modest in scale, the enterprise gradually developed proprietary production capabilities and brand identity.
The “Lilanz” trademark was registered in 1990. By 1992, the Lilanz suit had been recognised as a Fujian Province Famous Brand Product. Throughout the 1990s, the company expanded beyond pure manufacturing into branded menswear. By 2000, Lilanz was actively promoting the concept of “business casual”, which became a defining element of its identity for the subsequent decade.[2]
2000–2008: Building the modern brand
The early 2000s marked a significant period of brand development. Lilanz increased investment in fashion design, advertising, and celebrity marketing. In 2002, prominent Chinese actor Chen Daoming was appointed as a major brand spokesperson.
During this era, the company also began collaborating with designer Ji Wenbo, who later assumed the role of full-time chief designer. Lilanz expanded its national marketing presence through major media platforms, including CCTV. In 2006, the establishment of the Xiamen operation strengthened the company’s organisational and design infrastructure. In 2008, the English brand name was officially standardised as Lilanz.[2]
2009: Hong Kong listing
A pivotal milestone occurred on September 25, 2009, when China Lilang successfully listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The company describes itself as the first Chinese menswear brand enterprise to list in Hong Kong, signifying a transition from a traditional apparel manufacturer to a publicly traded fashion entity.[1]
The listed entity operates as China Lilang Limited, while Lilanz remains its principal menswear brand.
2010s: From “business casual” toward minimalism
Throughout the 2010s, Lilanz increasingly aligned its collections with contemporary concepts of sophistication, simplicity, and understated design. The brand participated in industry events such as Beijing Fashion Week and Tokyo Fashion Week, while cultivating stronger relationships with professional designers and elevating design as a core competitive strategy.[2]
A significant strategic development occurred in 2016 with the introduction of the Lilanz LESS IS MORE line. This collection represented an effort to create a younger, more fashion-forward expression of the brand, moving beyond conventional businesswear to explore contemporary interpretations of men’s fashion.[1]
The “LESS IS MORE” philosophy
“LESS IS MORE” is a central concept in modern Lilanz branding. The brand’s current philosophy is articulated as:
LESS BUT BETTER
Rather than treating minimalism solely as an aesthetic of plain clothing, Lilanz presents it as a holistic approach to design, functionality, materials, and manufacturing. The company states its objective is to transform from conventional “Manufacturing” to “Intelligent Manufacturing,” leveraging technology and product development to enhance everyday clothing.[1]
This philosophy is reflected in products such as:
- Long-lasting white non-iron shirts
- Water-repellent down jackets
- Wash-resistant Polo shirts
- Minimalist business-casual clothing
- Contemporary outerwear
- Trousers and other everyday menswear
Consequently, the brand emphasises not only visual simplicity but also practicality, durability, and ease of care.
2023: “Minimalist Men’s Wear”
In 2023, Lilanz formalised its market positioning by officially defining itself as “Minimalist Men’s Wear.” This repositioning was accompanied by a new visual identity and logo.
This shift represented a strategic departure from the brand’s historical association with Chinese business menswear and business casual clothing, aiming instead to broaden its image toward contemporary, understated, and design-oriented men’s fashion.[1] Concurrently, Lilanz promoted products featuring functional fabrics, including wash-resistant and water-repellent collections.
2024–2025: Internationalization
Beginning in 2024, China Lilang formally adopted a strategy described as “Multi-brand and Internationalization.” The company commenced development of the Chinese business for MUNSINGWEAR, a golf and sportswear brand, while simultaneously preparing the Lilanz label for overseas expansion. Specific plans were announced to operate Lilanz product lines in Southeast Asia.[2]
By 2025, Lilanz had opened four overseas stores, while MUNSINGWEAR opened six new locations in China.[2] This marks a shift from a historically China-centric business model toward a broader international fashion strategy.
Products and design
Lilanz has evolved from a producer of suits and traditional men’s clothing into a full-category menswear brand. Its current product range encompasses:
- Outerwear
- Jackets
- Down jackets
- Shirts
- Polo shirts
- T-shirts and innerwear
- Trousers
- Shoes
- Accessories
The company characterises this evolution as a transition from a single-category product business to a comprehensive product portfolio.[1]
Design philosophy
The contemporary Lilanz aesthetic is broadly defined as:
Minimal + functional + contemporary + understated
The brand generally avoids reliance on large logos or highly decorative elements, emphasising instead:
- Clean silhouettes
- Neutral and versatile styling
- Refined details
- Fabric technology
- Easy-care properties
- Business-to-casual versatility
- Practical everyday wear
This approach positions Lilanz as relevant to the modern Chinese professional men’s wardrobe, where garments must function across office, travel, social, and casual environments.
Technology and materials
A distinctive aspect of Lilanz’s current strategy is its emphasis on functional apparel technology.
Water-repellent down
Lilanz has invested significantly in water-repellent down products. The company utilises DownTek™ water-repellent down and has developed products designed to meet a Level-5 water-resistance standard under specified testing conditions.
In 2025, Lilanz led the formulation of two group standards relating to water-repellent down, covering terminology and testing/evaluation methods for moisture- and cold-resistance performance.[1]
Non-iron shirts
The company has developed technologies intended to preserve the whiteness and appearance of white shirts through repeated machine washing. Lilanz states that its technology enables certain shirts to maintain more than 95% whiteness retention after 30 machine washes under specified testing conditions.[1]
Wash-resistant Polo shirts
Another key innovation is the Wash-resistant 3.0 fabric. The company asserts that this material combines:
- Wash resistance
- Wear resistance
- Dimensional stability
- Colour fastness
- Breathability
- Comfort
The objective is to combine the easy-care characteristics of synthetic fibres with the comfort traditionally associated with cotton pique.[1]
Brand communication
Lilanz has historically maintained significant investment in celebrity endorsements, television advertising, entertainment partnerships, and cultural collaborations. Notable figures associated with the brand include:
- Chen Daoming
- Han Han
- Xu Kai
- Designer Ji Wenbo
The brand has also featured in entertainment programmes such as Call Me by Fire and This is Trend.[2]
In 2019, Lilanz initiated a broader IP collaboration strategy spanning animation, film, art, and other creative fields. It subsequently partnered with China National Geography on the “Seeing the Beauties of China” project, integrating Chinese landscape and cultural imagery into fashion products.[2]
Lilanz LESS IS MORE
Lilanz LESS IS MORE functions as a distinct younger and fashion-oriented expression of the brand. Launched in 2016 as a second growth curve, the line aims to render the brand more youthful and fashionable while retaining its minimalist design philosophy.[1]
The collection has been featured in various fashion events and designer collaborations. In 2025, for example, Lilanz released the “From Stone to Structure” designer collaboration series.[2]
Retail network
Lilanz has historically relied on an extensive physical retail network throughout China. Its store footprint covers diverse market tiers, including:
- Major cities
- Smaller cities
- County-level markets
- Shopping malls
- Traditional retail locations
- Outlet locations
According to company data, the group operated 2,817 terminal stores at the end of 2025, representing a net increase of 44 stores during the year.
The company has also shifted toward greater direct-to-consumer (DTC) operations and shopping mall placements, alongside the development of online sales channels. The 2025 annual report indicated that e-commerce revenue grew by 25% during the year.
Corporate structure
It is necessary to distinguish between Lilanz and China Lilang Limited.
Lilanz is the principal consumer-facing menswear brand. China Lilang Limited is the listed corporate group that owns and operates the brand. Historically, the group focused on designing, sourcing, manufacturing, and selling men’s business and casual apparel under the Lilanz label.[1]
The current corporate strategy is expanding beyond a single menswear label toward a multi-brand fashion group structure.
Financial scale
Lilanz operates as a substantial Chinese apparel business rather than an independent boutique label. For 2025, the company reported:
- Revenue: Approximately RMB 4.069 billion
- Lilanz terminal stores: 2,817
- Overseas Lilanz stores: 4
- Continued expansion of its multi-brand strategy
- Development of MUNSINGWEAR in China[1]
The company’s 2025 annual report was published in March 2026.[1]
