Origins

The history of Nicholson began with William Thomas Nicholson, an inventor focused on improving the manufacture of metal files. As early as 1856, he had been developing concepts for industrial file production. At that time, high-quality files were largely produced by hand, which made consistent mass production difficult.2

On April 5, 1864, Nicholson patented his first file-cutting machine and established the Nicholson File Company in Providence, Rhode Island. His mechanized process allowed files to be manufactured with greater consistency and at a lower cost than traditional hand-made alternatives.3

This technological shift became the foundation of the brand’s reputation. Rather than operating as just another tool manufacturer, the company became closely associated with the industrialization of file production.

Expansion in the 19th century

Nicholson File Company expanded considerably during the second half of the 19th century. Its product range grew beyond basic files to include numerous shapes, sizes, and types of files and rasps designed for different trades and industrial applications.

A significant milestone occurred at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where Nicholson reportedly exhibited more than 3,000 varieties of files and rasps.

By 1900, the company had expanded its international business and opened an additional location in Anderson, Indiana, reflecting the growing scale of American industrial manufacturing at the beginning of the 20th century.

Nicholson built its reputation on precision, consistency, and durability. One of the company’s historic slogans was:

“Twelve perfect files in every dozen.”

This slogan expressed the company’s emphasis on manufacturing consistency, a critical factor for tools whose cutting performance depends heavily on the uniformity of their teeth.

By the 1950s, Nicholson was described as dominating the file market worldwide.

Nicholson’s traditional specialty is manual material removal, comprising tools designed to remove, shape, smooth, or finish material through hand operation.
