History
Oral-B traces its origins to 1949, when California periodontist Dr. Robert W. Hutson noticed that many patients were damaging their gums by using hard-bristled toothbrushes. To solve this problem, he designed a toothbrush featuring 60 soft nylon bristle tufts, making brushing gentler while maintaining effective cleaning.
The toothbrush became known as Oral-B, short for “Oral Brush.” Initially, the products were distributed mainly through dentists, who recommended them to patients. The commercial launch followed in 1950. [3]
During the following decades, Oral-B expanded beyond manual toothbrushes into professional dental products and electric toothbrushes. The brand later became part of The Gillette Company, and in 2005, when Procter & Gamble acquired Gillette, Oral-B joined P&G’s oral care portfolio alongside Crest. [4]
