History
Foundation in 1937
Physicians Formula traces its origins to 1937, when Dr. Frank Crandall created the brand after seeking cosmetics suitable for his wife, who had sensitive skin. Rather than treating cosmetics simply as conventional beauty products, Crandall approached them from an allergist’s perspective. This origin story became central to the brand’s identity: beauty products should be effective while being gentle enough for sensitive skin. Historical records also describe the company’s early products as hypoallergenic skincare and cosmetics.[2]
The company initially sold products primarily through Dr. Crandall’s medical practice and to his patients. Over time, the business expanded into retail distribution. By the early 1960s, Physicians Formula products were being sold through hundreds of retail outlets in California and neighboring states.[3]
Expansion during the 20th century
Physicians Formula gradually developed from a small, medically inspired cosmetics company into a broader consumer beauty brand. The trademark PHYSICIANS FORMULA was registered in California in 1938 and later received federal trademark registration, reflecting the brand’s growing commercial presence.[3]
By the 1970s and 1980s, the company had expanded significantly. Historical court records indicate that by 1985 it was distributing its products through more than 2,000 retail outlets across 28 states.[3]
Ownership changes
Physicians Formula went through several ownership phases as the company grew. In 1990, Pierre Fabre Dermo-Cosmétique, the French pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical company, acquired Physicians Formula as part of its strategy for expanding brands in the United States.[2]
In 2003, entities affiliated with Summit Partners and members of management completed a buyout of Physicians Formula from Pierre Fabre.[2] A major subsequent change came in 2012, when Markwins acquired Physicians Formula. Markwins is a large independent beauty company whose portfolio has included brands such as Wet n Wild, Black Radiance, Lip Smacker and LORAC.
Brand philosophy
The central idea behind Physicians Formula is often summarized as “healthy beauty”: makeup should not require consumers to choose between appearance and skin comfort. The brand describes its current approach as combining science-backed technologies, natural ingredients and physician-informed expertise.[1] It says its products are developed with input from a “Physicians Coalition” and are evaluated for safety and efficacy.
Its current brand messaging emphasizes three major characteristics:
- Hypoallergenic
- Dermatologist tested
- Cruelty-free
Physicians Formula also says it avoids more than 500 known or questionable ingredients on its internal “No-No List.”[1] It is worth distinguishing brand claims from universal medical conclusions: “hypoallergenic” does not mean that every individual will be free from an allergic reaction, as ingredient sensitivities can vary from person to person.
Sensitive-skin positioning
Sensitive skin is arguably the most important differentiator in Physicians Formula’s brand identity. Unlike brands positioned primarily around professional artistry, luxury, fashion, or trend makeup, Physicians Formula historically connected cosmetics with allergy and dermatology concerns.[2] The company’s founder was an allergist, and the brand’s earliest products were developed specifically around sensitive skin.
Today, the company says its products are:
- Non-irritating
- Non-greasy
- Hypoallergenic
- Dermatologist approved
- Formulated without PABA
- Designed with sensitive skin in mind
The company says its safety evaluations include clinical evaluations and human-use trials under the supervision of a board-certified dermatologist.[1]
Product categories
Physicians Formula has developed a broad range of color cosmetics rather than remaining a niche sensitive-skin skincare company.
Face
Its complexion portfolio includes products such as foundation, concealer, powder, blush, bronzer, contour, highlighter, and setting products. The Mineral Wear line is particularly associated with the brand’s mineral-oriented approach.
Bronzer
Bronzer is one of Physicians Formula’s most recognizable categories. The brand has developed multiple bronzing formulas intended to provide warmth and glow while retaining its characteristic skin-conscious positioning.
Eyes
The brand produces mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, eye pencils, and other eye products. Its eye makeup benefits from the company’s historical emphasis on products suitable for consumers concerned about sensitivity.
Lips
Its lip portfolio includes lipsticks, lip glosses, lip liners, lip oils, and lip treatments. The current assortment includes products such as Mineral Wear Diamond Lip Oil Stain.[1]
Skincare-oriented makeup
Physicians Formula frequently blurs the traditional boundary between skincare and cosmetics by incorporating ingredients associated with moisturizing, conditioning, mineral or botanical formulations. This is particularly evident in collections such as Organic Wear and Mineral Wear.
Major product lines
Butter Collection
The Butter franchise is among Physicians Formula’s most recognizable modern product families. It is associated with rich, creamy textures and tropical-inspired ingredients, particularly murumuru butter. The collection has expanded beyond its original complexion products into a broader range of face makeup. The Butter aesthetic also represents an important evolution of the brand: rather than communicating only “medical” or clinical cosmetics, Physicians Formula combines its sensitive-skin positioning with sensory textures, tropical ingredients and mainstream beauty trends.
Murumuru Butter
The Murumuru Butter range is closely associated with the Butter Collection and is particularly recognized for bronzing and complexion products. Its positioning emphasizes a smooth, creamy feel and a luminous finish rather than a purely clinical appearance.
Mineral Wear
Mineral Wear is another important Physicians Formula franchise. The collection emphasizes mineral-based beauty and has included face powders, complexion products and other makeup. The brand continues to introduce products under the Mineral Wear name, including newer lip products.[1]
Organic Wear
Organic Wear represents the brand’s natural/organic-oriented side. Physicians Formula describes Organic Wear as using natural, organic and earth-friendly ingredients while maintaining performance.[1] This line is particularly important to understanding the brand’s attempt to occupy the intersection of natural beauty, sensitive skin, and affordable cosmetics.
Rose All Day
Rose All Day is a more lifestyle-oriented line within the portfolio. It demonstrates how Physicians Formula has expanded beyond its traditional “clinical cosmetics” image toward products influenced by contemporary beauty trends. The brand currently showcases Rose All Day among its product families.[1]
Cruelty-free status
Physicians Formula states that it is 100% cruelty-free and a PETA-certified member of the Beauty Without Bunnies program. The company says that it does not test its products on animals and does not commission outside facilities to conduct animal testing on its behalf. Instead, it says products are evaluated through human-use testing and clinical evaluations.[1]
Vegan status
Not every Physicians Formula product is vegan. The company offers a dedicated vegan collection, but it explicitly notes that some products may contain animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax or carmine.[1] Therefore, consumers looking for vegan cosmetics should check the ingredient information for individual products rather than assuming the entire brand is vegan.
“Clean beauty” positioning
Physicians Formula currently describes its formulas as clean, hypoallergenic and cruelty-free. The brand says its formulation philosophy involves excluding hundreds of ingredients that it considers harsh, questionable or undesirable.[1] However, “clean beauty” does not have one universally standardized regulatory definition. Therefore, it is best understood here as Physicians Formula’s own product-positioning and formulation philosophy, rather than a legally standardized category.
The Physicians Coalition
In 2018, Physicians Formula introduced its Physicians Coalition, bringing together medical professionals to provide expertise related to skin health and cosmetic formulation.[4] The original coalition included specialists in areas such as allergy, dermatology, and plastic surgery. The stated purpose was to incorporate medical and clinical perspectives into product development and healthy-beauty education.
The brand continues to use physician involvement as part of its identity. In 2025, Physicians Formula announced a new generation of Physicians Coalition partners.[4]
“Beaumanitarian” initiative
Physicians Formula has also developed a social and environmental positioning called “Beaumanitarian.” The concept combines beauty with environmental and social responsibility. According to the company, its initiatives have supported environmental health, literacy, women’s empowerment and related causes. The brand says it partnered with EARTHDAY.ORG and Dress for Success, among others, as part of these initiatives.[1]
The company states that it has contributed $500,000 to its Beaumanitarian Movement through partners supporting various global initiatives.[1]
Relationship with Markwins
Today, Physicians Formula is part of Markwins, a major privately held beauty company. Markwins was founded by Eric Chen in 1984 and developed a portfolio of mass-market and specialty beauty brands. Its history includes the acquisition of AM Cosmetics, which brought Wet n Wild and Black Radiance into its portfolio, followed later by acquisitions including Physicians Formula.[1] Markwins acquired Physicians Formula in 2012.
This ownership structure is significant because Physicians Formula operates within a larger beauty-brand ecosystem while retaining its own distinct identity centered on sensitive-skin-friendly cosmetics.
Market positioning
Physicians Formula occupies an interesting position within the beauty industry. It is generally positioned closer to mass-market and affordable prestige/masstige beauty than to traditional luxury cosmetics. Its competitive proposition can be summarized as accessible makeup combined with sensitive-skin positioning, physician/scientific credibility, and fashionable product development.
This gives the brand a different identity from luxury makeup houses, professional makeup brands, pure skincare companies, indie clean-beauty brands, and ultra-low-cost makeup brands. Physicians Formula attempts to combine elements of several of these categories.
Brand identity
One of the most interesting aspects of Physicians Formula is the evolution of its image.
Early identity
The original identity was essentially “cosmetics created by an allergist for sensitive skin.” This gave the company a medical/scientific point of differentiation at a time when the concept of hypoallergenic cosmetics was less mainstream.
Modern identity
The modern identity is closer to “healthy, gentle beauty that is still glamorous and trend-conscious.” The brand therefore uses colorful packaging, attractive textures, bronzers, highlighters and trend-driven makeup while continuing to emphasize dermatologist testing, hypoallergenic formulations and cruelty-free practices. This allows Physicians Formula to avoid looking exclusively “clinical.”
Reputation and recognition
Physicians Formula has maintained a particularly strong association with sensitive-skin-friendly makeup. Its longevity is itself notable: the company traces its history back to 1937, meaning that as of 2026 it has existed for almost 90 years. The brand has also historically been associated with introducing products that brought hypoallergenic concepts into mainstream cosmetics. For example, Physicians Formula has described itself as the creator of an early hypoallergenic lipstick and as a pioneer in “healthy beauty.”[4]
