The origins of Qman predate the adoption of the Qman name itself. According to company accounts reported by China Daily, the founder established a plastic-moulding factory in Chenghai in 1984, a district that subsequently developed into one of China’s most significant toy-manufacturing hubs.[16]

In 1994, the founder returned from an overseas business trip with a set of building blocks. His children’s interest in the toy inspired the family to develop an indigenous Chinese construction-block brand, leading to the establishment of the company’s building-block business.[2]

The company’s current website similarly states that it has produced original building blocks since 1994.[3]

The Enlighten era

For many years, the company’s products were marketed under the Enlighten name. The Chinese designation 启蒙 broadly conveys concepts of enlightenment or education. During this period, the company became one of the more recognisable Chinese manufacturers of LEGO-compatible construction blocks.

However, the early history of the brand remains controversial. Certain older Enlighten products drew criticism from LEGO enthusiasts and collectors for closely resembling LEGO sets. Early controversy

During the Enlighten era, Qman was associated with products that resembled LEGO sets and designs, becoming part of the broader debate surrounding Chinese “clone brick” manufacturers. This generated legal and commercial conflict with LEGO, as well as disputes involving European intellectual-property authorities.

The 2024–2026 LEGO/Qman case

In December 2024, LEGO A/S brought an action before the General Court of the European Union against Guangdong Qman Toys Industry Co. Ltd. concerning a registered EU design for a building block.[9] The case was designated T-628/24, LEGO v EUIPO – Guangdong Qman Toys Industry.

The General Court issued its judgment on 14 January 2026. The case concerned whether the Qman design lacked individual character and whether it created a different overall impression from an earlier LEGO design. The Court’s procedural result was dismissal of LEGO’s action on the merits.[6]

It is important to note that the 2026 judgment addressed the legal validity of a particular registered design; it should not be interpreted as a blanket declaration regarding the compatibility or infringement status of Qman’s entire product range.

Modern Qman emphasises legitimate IP authorisation, with its website specifically describing Keeppley as focusing on high-quality, cost-effective building blocks with legitimate IP authorisation.[7]

One of the most visible changes in Qman’s modern strategy is its use of official licences. Current Qman and Keeppley products include properties such as Pokémon, Hello Kitty, Doraemon, Naruto, Crayon Shin-chan, Detective Conan, Ultraman and Sumikko Gurashi.[8][20][23]

This licensing strategy allows Qman to compete through character recognition and model design rather than relying purely on price.

Keeppley is not a competing company but rather a Qman brand and product line.[22]

Qman occupies a distinct position within the global construction-toy market. While LEGO dominates the premium segment with extensive international retail presence and proprietary intellectual property, Qman operates at a different scale and competes through lower prices, large product variety, compatibility with the common brick format, strength in the Chinese market, licensed Asian IP, original themes, compact display models and manufacturing efficiency.

Keeppley, in particular, enables Qman to compete in the increasingly popular adult and collector building-set market.[24]

Qman is significant beyond being a LEGO alternative. China has developed a substantial domestic construction-toy industry, and Qman represents one of the companies that successfully transitioned from OEM and plastic manufacturing towards proprietary consumer brands.

Modern Qman/Keeppley

Evaluating Qman without distinguishing between its historical and modern products can therefore yield a misleading impression.

Qman is best understood as one of China’s established construction-toy manufacturers that evolved from the older Enlighten brand into a more modern, original-design and IP-focused company. Its trajectory reflects the broader evolution of China’s toy industry: beginning with plastic moulding and relatively inexpensive construction toys, building a substantial domestic manufacturing base, becoming associated with the controversial “LEGO clone” era, and subsequently shifting towards original designs, licensed franchises and internationally recognisable sub-brands such as Keeppley.

Today, the most distinctive element of Qman’s portfolio is arguably Keeppley, where licensed pop-culture models and compact architectural sets provide the company with a recognisable identity beyond serving as a lower-cost alternative to LEGO.
