About RhinoShield
RhinoShield (Chinese: 犀牛盾) is a Taiwanese consumer-electronics accessories brand best known for impact-resistant smartphone cases, screen protectors, and device accessories. Originating from materials-science research, the company has built its identity around impact protection, proprietary materials, customisation, design, and, more recently, circularity and plastic management.[1]
In simple terms: RhinoShield started as a materials-science project intended to make phones harder to break, became known for highly protective phone cases, and subsequently evolved into a global lifestyle and accessories brand with a strong emphasis on material engineering and sustainability.

The company describes itself today as a combination of “scientists, artists, [and] activists,” reflecting its move beyond conventional phone-accessory manufacturing.[2]
Origins
RhinoShield’s story began in materials science rather than consumer electronics. Its founder, Wang Ching-fu (Eric Wang), was studying materials science at the University of Cambridge when he became interested in protecting fragile glass surfaces such as smartphone and tablet screens. The idea was to adapt advanced impact-resistant materials to consumer electronics.
The resulting project eventually became Evolutive Labs, a Cambridge-linked materials-science startup. After research and development, the team took the product to Kickstarter, where it attracted substantial crowdfunding support. Contemporary documentation records a campaign that raised approximately £73,716 from 3,674 backers.[3]
This origin is central to understanding RhinoShield: the brand was originally built around material engineering, not simply around designing attractive phone cases.
The Kickstarter beginning
RhinoShield’s first major product was an impact-resistant screen protector. According to the company’s own history, its first major technological milestone came in 2013, when its ShockSpread™ technology was applied to screen protection. The company describes this as the foundation of its later impact-protection technology.[4]
The early product was unusual for its time because it attempted to combine impact resistance, thinness, transparency, flexibility, and protection of glass surfaces. The concept was essentially to manage the energy of an impact instead of merely putting a thick layer of hard material over the screen. That materials-science approach became the foundation of the RhinoShield brand.
From screen protectors to phone cases
RhinoShield subsequently expanded from screen protection into cases.
2014 — CrashGuard
In 2014, the company introduced CrashGuard, an impact-resistant bumper case. The design used ShockSpread™ technology together with a honeycomb-like structure intended to disperse impact forces.[5] This was a significant step because it established RhinoShield as a phone-case company, rather than simply a screen-protector company.
2015 — PlayProof
The company then introduced PlayProof, its first more comprehensive full-coverage case. It combined protection with different colours and customisable designs.[6]
2016 — SolidSuit
In 2016 came SolidSuit, which became one of RhinoShield’s signature products. SolidSuit was designed around a combination of high drop protection, relatively slim construction, comfortable grip, minimalist aesthetics, and premium finishes. RhinoShield says SolidSuit first appeared through Kickstarter and subsequently evolved through numerous iterations over roughly a decade.[7]
Competitive positioning
The simplest way to understand RhinoShield’s competitive positioning is as a materials-technology company that sells phone protection, rather than a traditional phone-case manufacturer. RhinoShield emphasises that its expertise is not merely manufacturing cases. Its R&D focuses heavily on materials science, with different materials and structural designs being developed for different protection and usability requirements.[8]
ShockSpread™
ShockSpread™ is one of RhinoShield’s most recognisable material technologies. The basic concept is impact management: when a phone hits a surface, the material and case structure are designed to help distribute and dissipate the energy rather than allowing it to concentrate at one vulnerable point. RhinoShield has continued developing the material rather than treating the original formulation as a finished technology.
Major product families
Today RhinoShield has a much broader portfolio than its original screen protector.
SolidSuit
One of its best-known traditional protective cases, SolidSuit’s design philosophy is essentially strong protection without making the phone case unnecessarily bulky. It has undergone numerous material and structural revisions since its introduction in 2016.[9]
CrashGuard
The bumper-style product that helped establish RhinoShield’s early reputation. Instead of completely surrounding the back of the phone, the original concept concentrated protection around the edges and corners.
MOD NX
MOD NX represents RhinoShield’s move toward modular and customisable cases. The concept allows users to change components of the case, rather than treating the case as one completely fixed object. The company identifies MOD NX as an important product milestone in its product-development history.[10]
SolidX
A newer protective case family that continues RhinoShield’s emphasis on structural protection and material engineering.
ClearX
A transparent case line intended to combine clear aesthetics with protection. RhinoShield currently promotes ClearX under the positioning “Clear, made stronger.”[11]
AirX
AirX represents a newer philosophy in phone protection. Rather than focusing exclusively on external drop protection, RhinoShield says AirX was developed around the possibility of internal damage to increasingly sophisticated smartphones. Modern phones contain cameras, antennas, processors and other delicate components, so RhinoShield argues that merely passing conventional drop tests does not necessarily describe every type of real-world damage.[12]
Design philosophy
RhinoShield has gradually moved away from the image of a purely utilitarian rugged phone-case brand. Its products increasingly combine three ideas:
Protection
The original foundation. The case should protect the device from drops, impacts and everyday accidents.
Design
RhinoShield gives significant attention to colours, graphics, textures, collaborations and customisation. This allows the case to become an expression of personal style, rather than something that simply hides the phone.
Material innovation
This is arguably the most distinctive part of the brand. Rather than relying exclusively on conventional materials, RhinoShield positions itself as a company that continually researches how materials can be engineered to produce particular combinations of impact resistance, thinness, flexibility, grip, transparency, durability and recyclability.
Customisation and collaborations
Another major part of RhinoShield’s identity is customisation. Instead of selling only standardised black or transparent protective cases, the company has built a large ecosystem of original artwork, graphic designs, artist collaborations, pop-culture collaborations, character designs, limited editions and user-created designs.
This helped RhinoShield bridge the gap between protective equipment and fashion or lifestyle accessories. Its corporate profile also emphasises relationships with both established brands and independent artists.[13] Consequently, two people can own essentially the same protective-case platform while having completely different visual designs.
Sustainability
Sustainability has become increasingly important to RhinoShield. The company says its thinking has evolved from “How do we make the best protective product?” toward “How do we make protective products without creating unnecessary plastic waste?”
Its current strategy focuses on plastic management and circularity. RhinoShield says approximately 1 billion phone cases are produced annually and 99% are difficult to recycle, which it uses as part of the rationale for changing the conventional case-production model.[14]
Its current sustainability philosophy is organised around three broad directions:
Modern Plastic™
Circulate rather than discard. The objective is to design products and materials so that plastic can remain within a circular system and potentially be reused.
Legacy Plastic™
Recover existing plastic waste. This involves addressing plastic that already exists rather than focusing exclusively on future products.
Future Plastic™
Develop lower-impact materials. The long-term goal is to develop materials that can provide the necessary functionality while reducing environmental impact.[15]
Circular materials
RhinoShield has increasingly experimented with mono-material and recyclable designs. The company says it began moving toward mono-material phone cases around 2017, challenging the conventional practice of combining multiple materials with adhesives and other components that can make recycling more difficult.[16]
More recently, RhinoShield has promoted ShockSpread™ ECO and other circular-material initiatives. According to the company, ShockSpread™ ECO has been engineered for repeated recycling and regeneration into subsequent products.[17]
This represents a significant change in the company’s philosophy, shifting from making a very durable case to making a durable case that can also participate in a circular material system.
Brand identity
RhinoShield’s visual identity is built around a shield and rhino concept. The name itself combines Rhino and Shield. The rhinoceros communicates strength, toughness and resilience, while the shield communicates protection. The company says that in Taiwan the brand is commonly known as 犀牛盾 (“rhino shield”).[18]
Since 2022, the company has standardised its English branding as RHINOSHIELD, in all capitals.[19]
Global expansion
Although RhinoShield originated in Taiwan, it has become an international brand. The company operates across markets in Asia, Europe, North America and other international markets. It maintains localised websites and operations in multiple languages, including English, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Spanish and Thai.[20]
Taiwan remains particularly important to the brand, but France and other European markets have also become significant.
Corporate evolution
RhinoShield’s development can roughly be divided into several eras:
| Period | Main identity |
|---|---|
| 2012–2013 | Materials-science startup / research project |
| 2013–2014 | Impact-resistant screen protection |
| 2014–2016 | Expansion into protective phone cases |
| 2016–2020 | Global protective-case brand |
| 2020–2022 | Broader lifestyle/design/customisation identity |
| 2022–2024 | Global brand consolidation and material innovation |
| 2024–present | Protection + design + circularity/plastic management |
The transition is particularly visible in RhinoShield’s own language. Its earlier identity centred heavily on military-grade impact protection, while its current corporate narrative talks about scientists, artists, activists, sustainability and plastic management.[21]
Relationship with “military-grade” protection
One phrase frequently associated with RhinoShield is “military-grade” or protection that exceeds military testing requirements. It is worth understanding this carefully. The term generally refers to products being tested against particular standardised impact or drop requirements; it does not mean a phone case is literally military equipment.
RhinoShield’s marketing historically used military-standard performance as a benchmark for demonstrating the toughness of its materials. Its newer products continue to emphasise protection, although the company increasingly frames protection in terms of material science and real-world device protection rather than simply quoting a drop-test number.[22]
Business model
RhinoShield essentially operates at the intersection of several industries: consumer electronics accessories, materials technology, industrial and product design, lifestyle and fashion, creative collaborations, and sustainability or circular economy.
This is why RhinoShield is somewhat different from a conventional generic phone-case manufacturer. A cheap case manufacturer primarily competes on price and appearance. RhinoShield attempts to compete on materials, engineering, protection, design, customisation, brand and sustainability.
Factors in brand success
Several factors contributed to RhinoShield’s growth.
Strong technical origin
The company began with materials scientists and an actual engineering problem rather than simply copying existing phone cases.
Kickstarter validation
Crowdfunding gave the original product international exposure and allowed RhinoShield to obtain funding and early users before becoming a conventional global accessories brand.[23]
Distinctive product proposition
The brand developed a recognisable proposition: very protective, but not necessarily enormous and bulky.
Customisation
Customers could treat the case as an accessory representing their personality.
Constant iteration
Products such as SolidSuit have been repeatedly redesigned rather than remaining static.[24]
Strong brand storytelling
RhinoShield combines engineering stories with visual design, artists and collaborations, making a relatively ordinary product category—phone cases—more emotionally interesting.
Sustainability
The company’s newer circular-material strategy gives it a broader purpose beyond simply selling more plastic accessories.[25]
RhinoShield today
As of 2026, RhinoShield is no longer best understood simply as a company that makes tough phone cases. Its own current positioning is closer to a materials-technology and sustainable-product company whose most recognisable products happen to be phone cases and protective accessories.
The company now explicitly talks about moving from accessory manufacturer to material-tech innovator to sustainable solution provider.[26] Its recent corporate storytelling places substantial emphasis on plastic management, circular design and environmental impact, while continuing to develop protective products such as AirX, ClearX, SolidX and SolidSuit.[27]
