History
Royal was introduced in 1922 by the original San Miguel Brewery as its first non-alcoholic carbonated beverage. During the early decades of the 20th century, San Miguel expanded beyond brewing beer into soft drinks, and Royal quickly became one of its flagship beverage brands. The orange flavor eventually became the company’s signature product under the name Royal Tru-Orange. [3]
In 1927, San Miguel became the first international bottler of Coca-Cola products. For many decades, Royal and Coca-Cola products coexisted under San Miguel’s beverage operations. [4]
A major restructuring occurred in 1981, when San Miguel transferred its soft drink business into Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines, Inc. (CCBPI), a joint venture with The Coca-Cola Company. Although production moved to the joint venture, San Miguel continued to own the Royal trademark. [5]
In 2007, San Miguel sold its remaining stake in CCBPI together with the rights to the Royal brand to The Coca-Cola Company, making Royal a fully Coca-Cola-owned brand. Since then, Royal has served as Coca-Cola’s primary fruit-flavored soft drink brand in the Philippines, occupying a role similar to Fanta in many other countries. [6]
Position in the Coca-Cola portfolio
Unlike many countries where Fanta is Coca-Cola’s flagship fruit-flavored soda, the Philippines uses Royal as its primary fruit soda brand because Royal was already a well-established local brand long before Coca-Cola acquired it. Rather than replacing it with Fanta, Coca-Cola retained Royal and continued investing in it as a uniquely Philippine brand. [7]

Royal’s lineup has expanded beyond its original orange soda to include several fruit flavors. Current products include:

Brand identity
Royal has traditionally positioned itself as a fun, youthful, and energetic beverage brand. Throughout its history, the brand has been promoted through colorful advertising campaigns centered on enjoyment, friendship, entertainment, and Filipino youth culture. Coca-Cola currently describes Royal as a “playful fruity indulgence” designed to deliver a lively fruit-flavored soft drink experience. [11]
Market presence
Royal remains one of the Philippines’ best-known orange soda brands and competes with other fruit-flavored carbonated beverages such as Fanta (internationally), Mirinda, Crush, and Sunkist. Because Royal is deeply established in the Philippine market, it enjoys strong brand recognition across multiple generations of consumers. [12]
The brand is widely distributed through:

-
Sari-sari stores

Legacy
Royal is notable for being one of the oldest continuously marketed soft drink brands in the Philippines. Having survived multiple ownership changes while retaining its identity, it has become part of Philippine food and beverage culture. More than a century after its launch, Royal continues to be one of Coca-Cola’s flagship local brands in the country and remains exclusive to the Philippine market. [14]
