History

The lubricant business of S-OIL predates the S-Oil Seven brand by several decades. The company entered the finished lubricant business in 1989, initially developing a broader portfolio of products in response to market demand before subsequently investing in technology, product development, and marketing.[1]

A significant milestone was the expansion into lubricant base oil manufacturing. Commercial production of lubricant base oil began in Korea in 1981, followed by the introduction of aramcoULTRA, a Group III/VHVI base oil, in 2002. This established a direct link between base oil production and the finished lubricant business.[1]

2014: Launch of S-OIL 7

S-OIL officially launched S-OIL 7 in May 2014 as a premium lubricant brand. At launch, six 100% synthetic engine oil products were introduced for various gasoline, diesel, and LPG applications.

The original concept of “7” combined five engine-related performance characteristics with two customer-oriented values:

  1. Fuel economy
  2. Environmental friendliness
  3. Drivability
  4. Engine durability
  5. Engine cleanliness
  6. Forward — improvement in driving performance
  7. Ascend — improved and satisfying driving experience

This seven-part framework served as the conceptual foundation of the brand.

2019: Brand integration

In 2019, S-OIL integrated its lubricant brands under the S-OIL 7 family. The previous S-OIL DRAGON and S-OIL 7 Eco brands were incorporated into the broader S-OIL 7 portfolio to strengthen the premium image while covering a wider range of products. Consequently, S-OIL 7 evolved from a specific product line into a master brand covering multiple grades and applications.[1]

Relationship with S-OIL

S-Oil Seven is a brand of S-OIL Corporation and should not be confused with a separate entity. S-OIL is a major South Korean energy company involved in petroleum refining, petrochemicals, and lubricants. Its lubricant operations are integrated with the company’s wider refining and base oil capabilities.

Regarding sales channels, S-OIL handles overseas lubricant sales directly, while domestic Korean sales are managed by S-OIL TotalEnergies Lubricants, a joint venture established in 2008 with TotalEnergies.

Technology and base oils

A key technical aspect of S-Oil Seven is its connection to S-OIL’s proprietary base oil production. Lubricants generally consist of a base oil combined with an additive package; the base oil determines fundamental physical and chemical behaviors, while additives enhance properties such as wear protection, oxidation resistance, cleanliness, and viscosity control.

S-OIL produces several grades of base oil, including Group II and Group III materials. Its aramcoULTRA product is classified as a Group III/VHVI base oil, characterized by a high viscosity index, oxidation stability, and low-temperature performance. Depending on the specific formulation, S-OIL 7 products may also utilize aramcoPRIMA, aramcoDURA, and PAO.

PAO technology

PAO (polyalphaolefin) is a synthetic base oil technology used in high-performance lubricants for its low-temperature behavior, oxidation resistance, and thermal stability. Not all S-OIL 7 products contain PAO; its inclusion depends on the specific grade and application. For instance, the S-OIL 7 GOLD #9 PAO series specifically incorporates PAO into its formulation.

Product structure

The current S-Oil Seven range is significantly broader than the original 2014 lineup.

Passenger car engine oils

The passenger car range is organized into multiple performance tiers:

  • #9 — Fully synthetic and high-performance products
  • #7 — Synthetic products
  • #5 — Premium products

The catalog includes formulations such as S-OIL 7 GOLD #9 PAO C3, S-OIL 7 GOLD #9 C2, S-OIL 7 GOLD #9 C5/C6, and newer additions like S-OIL 7 EV HYBRID. The GOLD #9 PAO C3 products, for example, are described as synthetic engine oils produced using PAO and advanced additive technology.

Hybrid vehicles

Addressing the specific demands of modern hybrid powertrains, which include frequent engine start-stop cycles and fuel economy requirements, the portfolio includes S-OIL 7 EV HYBRID. Available in 0W-16 and 0W-20 grades, the 0W-20 version is a VHVI-based fully synthetic gasoline engine oil meeting API SQ and ILSAC GF-7B specifications.

Commercial and diesel vehicles

S-Oil Seven includes lubricants for heavy-duty and commercial diesel engines. These products follow the same #9, #7, and #5 categorization as the passenger car line and are designed for trucks, buses, and other commercial vehicles requiring engine durability, soot control, oxidation resistance, and extended drain intervals.

Motorcycle oils

The brand offers a dedicated motorcycle oil category comprising fully synthetic, synthetic, and premium products.

Transmission and axle fluids

Beyond engine oils, the portfolio covers a comprehensive range of automotive fluids, including ATF, MTF, axle oils, and other transmission-related fluids.

Industrial and marine lubricants

S-OIL 7 exists within a larger ecosystem that extends to industrial and marine applications. The official product structure includes:

  • Hydraulic oils
  • Gear oils
  • Turbine and compressor oils
  • Process oils
  • Transformer oils
  • Greases
  • Marine cylinder oils
  • Trunk-piston engine oils
  • System oils

Brand philosophy

The number 7 is central to the brand’s identity, representing a combination of five technical engine benefits and two customer-focused values (Forward and Ascend). This philosophy positions the brand beyond simple synthetic classification, associating the numeral with a complete set of performance and experiential benefits.

K-LUBE positioning

S-OIL describes S-Oil Seven as a representative brand of “K-LUBE”, denoting Korean-made lubricant products. With exports to more than 70 countries, the brand maintains an international footprint consistent with S-OIL’s role as a global base oil supplier and lubricant manufacturer.

Research and development

Product development is supported by S-OIL’s TS&D Center, completed in 2017. This facility provides infrastructure for analysis, testing, and technical support, enabling the evaluation of lubricants against demanding modern engine technologies and industry specifications.

Product classification system

S-Oil Seven utilizes a system of numbers and colors to differentiate product categories. The #9 / #7 / #5 structure is part of the brand architecture rather than an indication of viscosity. It is distinct from SAE viscosity grades such as 0W-20 or 5W-30.

For example, the designation S-OIL 7 GOLD #9 PAO C3 5W-30 conveys specific information:

  • S-OIL 7: Brand
  • GOLD: Product family
  • #9: Performance tier
  • PAO: Formulation/base oil technology
  • C3: Performance specification category
  • 5W-30: SAE viscosity grade

Users should always verify individual specifications against vehicle manufacturer requirements.

Brand identity

The visual identity of S-Oil Seven features a distinctive black-and-gold color scheme centered around a stylized 7. Earlier brand materials presented this design as the top-tier lubricant identity, which later evolved into the automotive master brand aesthetic. The brand also utilizes a mascot named “Goodoil Seven” (구도일 세븐), derived from S-OIL’s broader “Goodoil” character concept.

Position in the lubricant market

S-Oil Seven occupies the premium and high-performance segment of S-OIL’s portfolio. Its market positioning relies on S-OIL’s refinery and base oil manufacturing capabilities, Group II/III and PAO technologies, extensive R&D, and a unified premium brand architecture established after the 2019 integration. S-OIL refers to S-OIL 7 as its “top-tier lubricant brand.”
