About Sebago
History
Foundation (1946)
Sebago was established in 1946 by Daniel J. Wellehan Sr., William Beaudoin, and Joseph Cordeau. The company was named after Sebago Lake in Maine, with “Sebago” originating from the Abenaki language, meaning “large stretch of water” or “long-shaped water basin.” [1]
The founders began by producing hand-sewn penny loafers using traditional moccasin construction techniques. Their first product, the Classic Beefroll Penny Loafer, quickly gained popularity for its comfort, durability, and meticulous craftsmanship. Remarkably, the shoe is still produced using many of the same hand-sewing methods employed over 75 years ago. [2]
Growth and Expansion
By the early 1950s, Sebago had become one of America’s fastest-growing casual footwear companies. The company celebrated the production of its one-millionth pair of shoes in 1954, with products sold through major American retailers including Sears and Montgomery Ward. [3]
During the 1950s and 1960s, Sebago expanded its offerings to include women’s footwear and began exporting internationally, establishing a strong presence across Europe. [3]
The Birth of Docksides (1970)
In 1970, Sebago introduced what would become its signature product: the Docksides boat shoe. [4]
Designed by avid sailors within the company, the Docksides featured:
-
Hand-sewn moccasin construction
-
Full-grain leather uppers
-
Slip-resistant rubber outsoles
-
Non-corrosive brass eyelets
-
Rawhide leather lacing system
Originally intended for sailing enthusiasts, the shoe soon became a fashion icon, especially among coastal communities and preppy dressers. Today, Docksides remains one of the most recognizable boat shoes in the world. [4]
Ownership Changes
Sebago remained an independent American company until 2003, when it was acquired by Wolverine Worldwide, a major American footwear corporation. [5]
In 2017, the Italian fashion group BasicNet S.p.A. acquired the Sebago brand, integrating it into its portfolio of heritage labels. Under BasicNet, Sebago expanded its global presence while continuing to emphasize its American roots and handcrafted identity. [5]
