About sengso
SengSo (also written Sengso or SENGSO) is a Chinese brand of twisty puzzles and educational toys widely recognised in the cubing community for its association with ShengShou (圣手). Retailers and enthusiasts frequently use the two names interchangeably, although product branding is not always entirely consistent.1 The brand is particularly noted for its high-order Rubik’s-style cubes, unusual shape modifications, Megaminx-family puzzles, and other specialty twisty puzzles. It has maintained a long-standing reputation for manufacturing large cubes at times when relatively few producers were willing to undertake such production.2## Quick facts

History
Origins
The company behind ShengShou and SengSo originated in Chenghai, Shantou, Guangdong, China, an area internationally known for its extensive toy-manufacturing industry. Huiqijia Science and Education Toys was established in 2000, initially concentrating on mould processing and manufacturing. This technical background proved significant, as producing twisty puzzles requires precision plastic injection moulding and the development of complex internal mechanisms.
In 2009, the company launched its own puzzle brand, ShengShou (圣手). The brand subsequently became one of the better-known Chinese manufacturers in the international twisty-puzzle market.3
Meaning of “ShengShou”
The Chinese name 圣手 is romanised as Shèngshǒu. Its literal meaning is roughly “divine hand”, but the expression can also refer to a person who is exceptionally skilled at a particular craft or activity. This linguistic nuance explains the variety of romanisations seen in the international market, including ShengShou, Shengshou, SengSo, Sengso, and SENGSO. The name SengSo appears extensively on modern products and retail listings, while ShengShou remains the designation most commonly used when discussing the company’s historical identity. Retailers explicitly describe SengSo as another name for ShengShou.14
Relationship between SengSo and ShengShou
The relationship between the two names is often a source of confusion. SengSo is not generally regarded by the cubing community as a completely unrelated manufacturer; rather, it is closely associated with the ShengShou brand and company and is frequently presented as SengSo/ShengShou. Current retailers often list products under “SengSo” while describing them as having ShengShou mechanisms or explicitly labelling the brand as ShengShou/SengSo.5 Historical community evidence also shows cubers referring to products as “Sengso (ShengShou)” and discussing SengSo as a branding or name used by ShengShou.6
For practical purposes, SengSo can be understood as a modern international product branding associated with ShengShou rather than a wholly separate puzzle manufacturer. However, due to some inconsistency in how retailers and databases classify individual products, it is generally safer to use “SengSo/ShengShou” when discussing the brand as a whole.
Rise in the cubing industry
SengSo/ShengShou gained particular prominence during the development of the high-order cube market. At the beginning of the modern speedcubing era, most manufacturers concentrated on relatively small puzzles such as the 2×2×2, 3×3×3, 4×4×4, and 5×5×5. ShengShou distinguished itself by producing increasingly large cubes. Its product history includes a progression from 6×6 through 7×7, 8×8, 9×9, 10×10, 11×11, 12×12, 13×13, 15×15, 16×16, 17×17, and up to 19×19.
The brand’s historical importance in this area is substantial. It was among the earliest manufacturers to make high-order cubes widely available, and its products helped make large cubes significantly more accessible to collectors and enthusiasts.2
High-order cubes
High-order cubes are arguably SengSo/ShengShou’s defining product category. While a standard Rubik’s Cube is 3×3×3, a 7×7 cube has seven layers on each axis, producing a vastly larger number of pieces and possible configurations. ShengShou became particularly well known for producing these large puzzles.
Historically important examples include:
- ShengShou 7×7: One of the company’s important early high-order products, it became a recognisable puzzle within the speedcubing community.11
- ShengShou 8×8: Part of the company’s early expansion into increasingly large cubes.18
- ShengShou 11×11: Released in 2016, this model represented an important milestone in the development of mass-produced high-order cubes.8
- SengSo 16×16: The pillowed 16×16 became particularly notable because it was described by the Speedsolving wiki as the only mass-produced 16×16 at the time.18
- SengSo 17×17: This model continued the company’s push into extreme high-order puzzles and became one of the largest commercially available cubic puzzles.18
- SengSo 19×19: Released in August 2020, the 19×19×19 was particularly significant. According to the Speedsolving Wiki, it was the largest mass-produced cube until MoYu introduced its 21×21 the following year.18
Beyond ordinary cubes
SengSo is not solely a manufacturer of large cubes. One of its most distinctive characteristics is the enormous variety of non-standard twisty puzzles it has produced.
Shape modifications
The catalogue has included numerous shape mods such as the Mastermorphix, Mirror Cube, Axis-style puzzles, Windmill-style puzzles, Phoenix/Birds puzzles, circular cubes, pillowed cubes, column puzzles, and various geometrically modified 3×3, 4×4, and 5×5 puzzles.9
Cubes with unusual mechanisms
SengSo has also produced puzzles involving unusual rotational axes and mechanisms, including products marketed as 5-Axis, 7-Axis, and other unconventional designs. Current puzzle databases contain numerous examples of these specialised mechanisms.7
Megaminx family
The company has produced a substantial range of dodecahedral puzzles, including the Megaminx, Kilominx, Master Kilominx, Gigaminx, Teraminx, and larger Megaminx variants. Historical Speedsolving databases document several of these products, including the Elite Kilominx, Master Kilominx, Gigaminx, and Teraminx.9
Other twisty puzzles
The broader catalogue has also included the Pyraminx, Square-1, Square-2, Mastermorphix, Mirror puzzles, Magic Clock variants, high-order Mastermorphix puzzles, Face-Turning Octahedron-related products, and various experimental shape modifications. Current product listings demonstrate the breadth of this range, encompassing circular cubes, Magic Clock products, Mastermorphix puzzles, Megaminx variants, Square puzzles, and very large cubes.9
Design philosophy
SengSo/ShengShou’s product philosophy has historically differed somewhat from companies such as GAN, MoYu, or QiYi. Where modern flagship brands frequently compete on extremely fast turning, sophisticated magnetic positioning, adjustable cores, premium coatings, and highly refined 3×3 speedcubes, ShengShou has often concentrated on variety, unusual mechanisms, and large puzzles.10
Its strength is therefore not necessarily in making the fastest possible 3×3. Instead, it has historically been willing to produce puzzles that other manufacturers might consider too specialised or commercially risky, including enormous cubes and unusual shape modifications.
SengSo and speedcubing
SengSo/ShengShou occupies a complex position in competitive speedcubing. It has produced many cubes capable of being solved competitively, and its high-order puzzles have been used by serious cubers. The company has also contributed heavily to the availability of high-order puzzles. However, ShengShou’s reputation for 3×3 speedcubes has historically been less dominant than its reputation for large and unusual puzzles.
The Speedsolving Wiki, for example, documents numerous older ShengShou 2×2 and 3×3 models while describing some early models as unsuitable for modern speedcubing. Consequently, SengSo’s historical identity is more aligned with being a puzzle manufacturer and innovator than a premium 3×3 speedcube specialist. This distinction is important when comparing the brand with competitors like GAN, MoYu, QiYi, or YJ.11
Product generations
The evolution of SengSo/ShengShou can be broadly categorised into distinct phases:
2000–2008: Manufacturing foundation
The parent company developed expertise in mould production and manufacturing.12
2009–early 2010s: ShengShou emerges
The ShengShou brand entered the twisty-puzzle market and began establishing itself with conventional cubes and increasingly ambitious puzzles.13
Early–mid 2010s: High-order expansion
The company became especially recognisable for 6×6, 7×7, 8×8, and larger cubes.13
Mid–late 2010s: Puzzle diversification
The catalogue expanded substantially into Megaminx variants, Mastermorphix, Square puzzles, Pyraminx, shape modifications, and very large cubes.13
2020s: SengSo branding
“SengSo” became increasingly visible on product packaging and international retail listings, particularly for newer and more unusual puzzles. At the same time, retailers and enthusiasts continued to use SengSo and ShengShou interchangeably.13
Brand identity
SengSo occupies several different positions simultaneously within the market.
As a toy company
Its products are educational toys designed around spatial reasoning, problem solving, memory, logical thinking, and hand-eye coordination. The parent company’s registered business activities include toy manufacturing, mould manufacturing, plastic products, and related educational items.15
As a cubing brand
It is a recognised name among twisty-puzzle enthusiasts globally and in the Philippines.16
As a collector brand
SengSo is particularly interesting to collectors because it has produced many puzzles that are not simply different versions of the standard 3×3.
As a manufacturer
Its manufacturing heritage in mould development and plastic production is central to its ability to produce complicated puzzle mechanisms and enormous numbers of pieces.14
Trademark
Formal trademark evidence exists for the name SENGSO. A U.S. trademark registration for SENGSO was filed in March 2019 and registered in September 2019. The listed goods included cube-type puzzles, dominoes, jigsaw puzzles, magnetic building blocks, and other toys. The registered owner was Guangzhou Jingfa Commercial and Trading Co., Ltd.8
This demonstrates that SENGSO is not merely an accidental English spelling appearing on reseller websites; the name has been formally used as a trademark. However, this trademark record does not by itself establish the entire corporate relationship between Guangzhou Jingfa and the Huiqijia/ShengShou manufacturing operation, so those entities should not automatically be treated as identical.
Reputation among cubers
SengSo has developed a distinctive reputation within the cubing community.
Strengths
- Huge variety: Few companies have produced such a wide range of unusual twisty puzzles.
- High-order cubes: This remains arguably the brand’s signature area.
- Willingness to experiment: SengSo frequently produces puzzles with unusual shapes, axes, and mechanisms.
- Collector appeal: Some SengSo puzzles are interesting even when the buyer is not particularly interested in speedsolving.
- Accessibility: Historically, ShengShou helped bring large cubes to a wider audience rather than restricting them to extremely expensive boutique products.14
Weaknesses
The brand’s products are not uniformly high-performing. A SengSo 3×3, a 19×19, a Mastermorphix, and a Square-2 can have completely different design priorities. Community discussions also frequently distinguish SengSo’s unusual or collector puzzles from the highly optimised flagship speedcubes produced by modern competitors.10
Comparison with major competitors
| Brand | Particularly known for |
|---|---|
| SengSo/ShengShou | High-order cubes, unusual puzzles, shape mods, experimental designs |
| GAN | Premium speedcubes, magnetic technology, flagship 3×3s |
| MoYu | Competitive speedcubing, high-performance cubes, broad range |
| QiYi | Speedcubes, budget-to-premium products, creative puzzles |
| YJ | Budget/competitive cubes and specialized puzzles |
| YuXin | High-order cubes and speedcubes |
| DaYan | Innovative mechanisms and historically important speedcubes |
While GAN describes itself as a speedcubing-focused company with an emphasis on technological innovation and magnetic or smart-cube systems, SengSo’s identity is closer to large-scale and imaginative twisty-puzzle manufacturing.17
Historical importance
SengSo/ShengShou’s importance lies not necessarily in producing the world’s best 3×3, but in expanding the idea of what a mass-produced twisty puzzle could be. The company was willing to progress from 3×3 to 19×19 while simultaneously producing increasingly strange puzzles such as Mastermorphixes, Megaminx variants, and unusual shape modifications. Its 19×19 was, for a period, the largest mass-produced cube available before being surpassed. This gives SengSo/ShengShou a particularly important place in the history of high-order and experimental twisty puzzles.15
The name “SengSo”
The original Chinese brand is 圣手, normally romanised as Shèngshǒu, hence ShengShou. SengSo is therefore not a conventional pinyin romanisation of 圣手. Instead, SengSo appears to function as an international product brand spelling. This explains why one may see “SengSo 7×7” on one website and “ShengShou 7×7” on another. This is not necessarily evidence that they are two different cubes; modern retailers routinely categorise SengSo products under ShengShou and vice versa.16
Legacy
Today, SengSo/ShengShou is best understood as one of the long-running Chinese twisty-puzzle manufacturers. Its legacy can be summarised in four areas:
- High-order cubes: Helping popularise commercially available cubes far beyond 5×5.
- Puzzle variety: Producing an unusually broad selection of twisty puzzles.
- Manufacturing expertise: Leveraging its mould-production background to make complicated plastic mechanisms.
- Collector culture: Creating many puzzles whose appeal comes from novelty, engineering, and appearance rather than pure speed.14
