History
The Beginning (1935)
The story of Sperry began when Paul A. Sperry, an avid sailor, slipped and fell overboard while sailing on Long Island Sound. Frustrated by the lack of grip on wet decks, he searched for a better solution.
His inspiration came from watching his cocker spaniel, Prince, effortlessly run across icy and slippery surfaces without falling. Looking closely at the dog’s paw pads, Sperry noticed tiny grooves that provided exceptional traction.
Inspired by nature, he carved a similar pattern into rubber soles, creating the world’s first non-slip boat shoe. This innovation became known as Wave-Siping™, a design that remains one of Sperry’s signature technologies today. [2]
