Fellow says it began with the goal of bringing a more approachable, design-conscious café experience into the home. After launching its first product through Kickstarter, the company expanded into coffee-brewing equipment, with Stagg becoming an important part of that expansion.

Origins of Fellow

Stagg’s history is closely tied to Fellow’s founding in San Francisco in 2013. Founder Jake Miller established Fellow with the idea that coffee equipment could combine high performance with attractive industrial design rather than forcing consumers to choose between functionality and aesthetics. Fellow’s first product was the Duo Coffee Steeper, which was launched through Kickstarter.[1]

The company’s subsequent products increasingly focused on specialty coffee brewing.

Stagg Pour-Over Kettle

In 2014, Fellow introduced the original Stagg stovetop pour-over kettle. Unlike a conventional household kettle, Stagg was designed specifically around controlled pouring for manual coffee brewing. Its narrow gooseneck spout allowed the brewer to direct water more precisely onto coffee grounds.[2]

This established several characteristics that would become associated with the Stagg name:

Stagg EKG

The most important development in the Stagg family came in 2016, when Fellow introduced the Stagg EKG, an electrically heated version designed around precise temperature control. Fellow describes the EKG as becoming an industry standard among electric pour-over kettles.[3]

The EKG combined a distinctive gooseneck spout with electronic temperature control, a digital display, a control dial, and a brew stopwatch. These features made it possible to set and maintain a specific water temperature rather than simply boiling water and waiting for it to cool.

The product became particularly recognizable in specialty coffee shops and among home brewers. SFMOMA’s museum store, which was an early Fellow retailer, has described the EKG as the product that helped put Fellow “on the map.”

A defining characteristic of Stagg is its focus on pour-over brewing rather than general-purpose boiling.

The long, narrow spout is designed to give the user greater control over the rate and location of water flow. This matters in pour-over brewing because the brewer can manipulate the coffee bed through techniques such as controlled pouring, blooming, and pulse pouring.

The physical design also became part of the product’s identity. The Stagg EKG features a sculptural handle, compact base, and minimalist body, making it visually distinct from conventional electric kettles. Contemporary coverage has particularly highlighted its gooseneck spout, distinctive handle, and squared-off base.[4]

In other words, Stagg was designed not merely as a water-heating appliance, but as a coffee-brewing instrument.

The Stagg EKG is the flagship product associated with the Stagg name.

Fellow subsequently expanded the EKG concept with the Stagg EKG Pro.

Rather than hiding the appliance away as a purely utilitarian object, Fellow treats coffee equipment as part of the visual environment of the kitchen. The Stagg EKG’s appearance is therefore almost as recognizable as its technical specifications.

Fellow is the company and overarching coffee-equipment brand, while Stagg is a product family within Fellow’s catalog.

Fellow’s portfolio has expanded substantially beyond Stagg to include products such as:

The Stagg EKG Pro was also selected for Oprah’s Favorite Things in 2023, illustrating the product’s crossover from specialty-coffee equipment into mainstream premium kitchen design.[11]

Its importance is arguably less about inventing the electric gooseneck kettle than about popularizing the idea that precision coffee equipment could also function as a premium design object.

As of 2026, the Stagg family remains part of Fellow’s kettle lineup. Current products include the Stagg EKG, Stagg EKG Pro, and Stagg EKG Pro Studio, alongside the original-style Stagg pour-over kettle.[12]

Fellow has expanded internationally and states that it has distributors and customers in more than 50 countries.

The brand’s continuing identity is centered on precision brewing, particularly pour-over coffee, with design serving as a major differentiator.

Legacy

In the history of modern home coffee equipment, Stagg can be viewed as one of the products that helped merge specialty-coffee culture with premium consumer industrial design.

Its significance comes from three things:

1. It made precision pouring approachable.
The gooseneck kettle transformed a relatively specialized brewing tool into a recognizable consumer product.

2. It made temperature control central to the kettle experience.
The EKG turned temperature selection and maintenance into explicit brewing controls rather than incidental appliance functions.

3. It made coffee equipment aspirational.
The Stagg EKG is intentionally designed to be displayed rather than hidden, contributing to the broader trend of treating coffee equipment as part of kitchen and lifestyle design.
