History
Foundation
Toy Kingdom was established in 1991, with its first branch opening at SM Megamall. The business was developed within the SM Group, the Philippine conglomerate founded by Henry Sy Sr. The concept was to create a large-format specialty retailer dedicated to toys rather than treating toys simply as one department within a general merchandise store.2
The launch of Toy Kingdom coincided with the continuing expansion of SM’s shopping-mall network. This gave the brand a natural distribution platform: Toy Kingdom stores could be positioned inside major SM shopping centers, where they could reach families and children as part of the broader mall experience.
Expansion
Following its establishment, Toy Kingdom expanded beyond its original SM Megamall location. Its stores became a recognizable feature of SM Supermalls, while smaller toy departments known as Toy Kingdom Express were also developed within SM Stores.3
Over time, the retailer broadened its assortment beyond traditional children’s toys. Its catalog now encompasses categories such as action figures, vehicles, dolls, plush toys, learning toys, building sets, puzzles, arts and crafts, games, collectibles, blind boxes, riding toys, sports and outdoor products, and children’s accessories.
SM Retail integration
Toy Kingdom is now part of SM Retail’s Specialty Stores segment. SM Retail describes Toy Kingdom alongside specialty brands such as ACE Hardware, Baby Company, SM Appliance Center, Our Home, Pet Express and other retail concepts.4
This relationship is important to understanding Toy Kingdom’s identity: although it operates as a distinct toy-retail brand, it benefits from the wider SM ecosystem of malls, retail operations, logistics, marketing and customer traffic.
Business and retail concept
Toy Kingdom’s central proposition is essentially a one-stop toy and children’s lifestyle store. Rather than concentrating exclusively on conventional toys for young children, the retailer serves several overlapping audiences:
- Young children looking for conventional play toys
- Parents and families shopping for birthdays, holidays and rewards
- Older children and teenagers interested in games, collectibles and franchises
- Hobbyists and collectors interested in figures, trading cards and limited releases
- Adult collectors or “kidults” interested in LEGO, anime merchandise, blind boxes and other collectibles
The retailer’s current assortment demonstrates this broad positioning. Its online catalog includes traditional toy categories alongside collectibles, gaming, arts and crafts, STEM-related products, riding toys, outdoor play equipment and other merchandise.5
Product categories
Toy Kingdom’s assortment is considerably broader than the word toy might initially suggest.
Action figures and vehicles
The company carries action figures, toy vehicles and related play accessories. These include products based on major entertainment franchises as well as traditional toy lines.6
Dolls and plush toys
Dolls, doll accessories and plush toys form another major part of its children’s assortment.7
Building and educational toys
Toy Kingdom also has a significant learning-oriented assortment, including blocks, puzzles, STEM toys and electronic learning products.8 One prominent example is LEGO, for which Toy Kingdom carries sets across numerous themes and age groups.9
Games and collectibles
The modern Toy Kingdom assortment extends heavily into gaming and collecting. Its catalog includes indoor games, arts and crafts, collectibles, blind boxes, consoles and accessories.10
Franchise merchandise
A particularly important component is merchandise connected to globally recognizable entertainment franchises. For example, Toy Kingdom maintains a dedicated Pokémon assortment featuring trading cards, action figures, games and other merchandise.6 This illustrates how Toy Kingdom has evolved from a conventional children’s toy retailer into a retailer that also serves the collector and fandom market.
Toy Kingdom and the “kidult” market
One of the more interesting developments in Toy Kingdom’s modern identity is its appeal to kidults—teenagers and adults who continue to purchase toys, collectibles and hobby products. This is visible in the company’s emphasis on:
- Collectible figures
- Trading cards
- Blind boxes
- LEGO
- Anime merchandise
- Limited-edition products
- Franchise merchandise
- Hobby and gaming products
Toy Kingdom itself describes its Toy Expo as an event for “parents, kids and kidults alike,” explicitly recognizing adult collectors as part of its customer base.11
Toy Kingdom Toy Expo
The Toy Kingdom Toy Expo is one of the brand’s most prominent events. The event began in 2014 and developed into a recurring celebration of toys, collectibles and popular franchises. The 2026 edition is scheduled for August 13–16, 2026, at the SMX Convention Center at the SM Mall of Asia complex. Toy Kingdom says the 2026 event features more than 200 brands, collector zones, experiential booths, limited-edition collaborations, anime merchandise, blind boxes and exclusive products.12
The Expo is significant because it illustrates Toy Kingdom’s evolution from simply being a place to buy toys into a broader toy-and-pop-culture experience brand.
Toy Kingdom Kiddie Crew
Another distinctive initiative is the Toy Kingdom Kiddie Crew program. Started in 2014, the program allows children to experience what it is like to work in a toy store. Participants learn activities such as greeting customers, gift wrapping, selling and cashiering through a play-oriented workshop. The program is designed for children aged 6–9.8
The program reflects an important aspect of Toy Kingdom’s marketing strategy: the store is presented not merely as a retail environment but as a place connected with children’s imagination and experiences.
Toy Kingdom Amazing Card
Toy Kingdom operates a customer loyalty program known as the Toy Kingdom Amazing Card (TKAC). Members can earn points from purchases and receive various promotions, discounts, freebies and special privileges. The program also provides members with access to selected events, product launches and other activities.9
The loyalty program is particularly useful for a retailer whose customers make recurring purchases around birthdays, holidays, school seasons and collecting hobbies.
Online retail
Although Toy Kingdom’s identity was originally built around physical stores, the brand has also developed an online retail presence. Its official website provides online shopping alongside information about stores, catalogs, brands, promotions and customer services.13
Toy Kingdom’s official social-media hub also lists several online shopping channels, including its own website, Shopee, SM Malls Online, GrabMart, MetroMart and Pick.A.Roo.10 This gives the brand a multichannel retail model, combining physical stores with e-commerce and third-party delivery/shopping platforms.
Relationship with SM
Toy Kingdom’s relationship with SM is central to its history and distribution strategy. SM’s retail business originated with Henry Sy Sr.’s ShoeMart store in Manila in 1958 and subsequently grew into the much larger SM retail ecosystem.14
Toy Kingdom represents the group’s specialization in the toy and children’s-products category. SM Retail currently identifies Toy Kingdom as one of its specialty-store brands, with specialty formats operating both inside SM malls and, selectively, outside them.15 This gives Toy Kingdom access to one of the Philippines’ largest retail ecosystems while allowing it to maintain its own specialized brand identity.
Social and community activities
Toy Kingdom has also participated in SM’s community-oriented initiatives. For example, an SM Foundation annual report documented a Share-A-Toy initiative in which SM and Toy Kingdom donated 45,000 toys in 2013 to children served by organizations accredited by the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development.16
Such activities reinforce the brand’s association with children, families and gift-giving rather than positioning it purely as a commercial retailer.
Brand identity
Toy Kingdom’s brand identity can broadly be understood through four ideas:
- Play — Toys and games remain the foundation of the business.
- Discovery — Large assortments encourage customers to browse and discover new products.
- Family — The brand is strongly associated with parents, children and family shopping trips.
- Fandom and collecting — Its modern assortment increasingly encompasses older consumers, collectors and pop-culture enthusiasts.
Consequently, the modern Toy Kingdom is considerably broader than a traditional children’s toy shop.
Market position
Within the Philippine retail market, Toy Kingdom occupies the position of a large-scale specialty toy retailer. Its competitive advantage comes partly from its relationship with SM. Many branches are located within major shopping malls, putting the brand directly in front of large volumes of family and leisure shoppers.
The company also competes with other toy retailers and with alternative channels such as department stores, specialty shops, hobby stores, online marketplaces and direct-to-consumer brand websites. Its differentiation comes from combining a broad toy assortment with physical retail experience, major entertainment franchises, collector products, promotions, events and an established nationwide retail presence.
Current era
As of 2026, Toy Kingdom continues to operate as an SM Retail specialty brand while expanding its relevance beyond traditional children’s toys. Its current website shows an assortment spanning toys, learning products, games, collectibles, outdoor products, children’s accessories and other categories.17
The 2026 Toy Expo also demonstrates the direction of the brand: Toy Kingdom is increasingly positioning itself around toys + collecting + fandom + experiences, rather than only children’s playthings. The inclusion of anime merchandise, blind boxes, limited collaborations and collector zones alongside traditional children’s activities is particularly indicative of this broader strategy.
Toy Kingdom is a Philippine specialty toy retailer founded in 1991, operated by International Toyworld, Inc. under SM Retail, and known for its extensive selection of children’s toys, games, educational products, collectibles and pop-culture merchandise through physical stores and online channels.18
