About Dr Scholl’s
Dr Scholl’s is an American-origin foot care and comfort brand best known for insoles, shoe inserts, foot pain products, and treatments for common foot conditions. Founded by Dr William Mathias Scholl in Chicago in the early 20th century, the brand grew from a medically oriented arch-support business into one of the world’s most recognised consumer foot care brands. In markets outside the Americas, the same heritage is often represented under the shorter Scholl name.[1]
As of 2026, the brand is part of Scholl’s Wellness Company, a portfolio company of private equity firm Yellow Wood Partners. Yellow Wood acquired the American Dr Scholl’s business from Bayer in 2019 and acquired the international Scholl business from Reckitt in 2021, effectively bringing the two previously separated businesses back together.[2]

The brand’s own history states that Scholl patented his first arch-support invention in 1904 and established the Dr Scholl’s company in 1906.[2]
Founder background
The story of Dr Scholl’s begins with William Mathias Scholl (1882–1968). Born on June 22, 1882, in La Porte, Indiana, into a large family, Scholl was influenced by his grandfather, a German shoemaker, and became familiar with footwear and shoe repair from a young age. At 16, he left the family farm to become an apprentice at a shoemaker’s shop in Chicago.[1]
While working with shoes, he observed how frequently people complained about foot pain and discomfort, which led to his interest in the anatomy and medical treatment of the foot. He subsequently studied medicine at what became Loyola University Chicago, earning his M.D. in 1904. Rather than establishing a conventional medical practice, he applied his medical knowledge to footwear and foot-support technology.[3] This combination of medicine, footwear, and engineering became the fundamental philosophy behind the brand.
Early inventions and philosophy
In 1904, while still a student, Scholl patented his first arch-support invention. The concept was to support the arch of the foot from inside the shoe. This invention became the foundation for his business, and in 1906, he founded the Dr Scholl’s company to manufacture and sell foot care products.[2]
Scholl built the business around the idea that foot health affects the entire body, historically summarised by the phrase: “When your feet hurt, you hurt all over.” This concept transformed foot care from a niche medical concern into a matter of everyday comfort and mobility. Dr Scholl’s states that Scholl was responsible for bringing more than 1,000 foot care products to market during his lifetime.[4]
Instead of requiring consumers to visit a specialist for every minor foot problem, Dr Scholl’s developed products that could be purchased and used easily at home or with ordinary footwear. Over time, the product range expanded from arch supports to include insoles, shoe inserts, foot cushions, corn and callus treatments, wart treatments, blister protection, bunion products, odour control solutions, foot files, foot care devices, and footwear. The modern company describes its mission as helping people “move better from the ground up.”[3]
Brand naming and global structure
A significant aspect of the company’s history is that Dr Scholl’s and Scholl were not always controlled by the same entity. For decades, ownership and trademark rights were divided geographically. In the Americas, the brand was generally known as Dr Scholl’s, while outside the Americas, it was commonly marketed as Scholl. According to Yellow Wood, the brand rights had been separated between the Americas and the rest of the world for more than 30 years.[5]
This geographical split explains why consumers in the Philippines may encounter products branded as Scholl, while those in the United States know the same lineage as Dr Scholl’s. Both names trace back to the same historical founder and are now under the same broader ownership structure following the 2021 reunification.[11]
Corporate ownership history
Dr Scholl’s has undergone several major corporate ownership changes throughout its history:
- 1906–1970s: William Scholl built the business from his original inventions into an international foot care company.
- 1979: Schering-Plough acquired the Dr Scholl’s brand.
- 2009: Merck acquired Schering-Plough, making Dr Scholl’s part of Merck & Co.
- 2014: Bayer acquired Merck’s consumer health business, bringing the Americas Dr Scholl’s business into Bayer Consumer Health.[2]
- 2019: Bayer completed the sale of its Dr Scholl’s business to Yellow Wood Partners for US$585 million. Bayer reported that the business had generated US$234 million in sales in 2018.[14] Yellow Wood established Scholl’s Wellness Company as the standalone organisation operating the Americas business.
- 2021: Yellow Wood acquired the international Scholl business from Reckitt, completing the transaction in June 2021. This combination created an integrated global foot care company operating in over 50 countries, with annual retail sales exceeding US$700 million at the time.[11]
Current ownership and leadership
Today, Scholl’s Wellness Company is the parent company associated with the Dr Scholl’s brand and is owned by Yellow Wood Partners, a Boston-based private equity firm focused on consumer brands.[15] In March 2025, Scholl’s Wellness Company appointed Meghan Davis as CEO, with the company describing its strategy as accelerating global growth and continuing to unify the Dr Scholl’s brand worldwide.[16]
In May 2026, Scholl’s Wellness Company acquired VKTRY, a performance-insole and footwear technology brand specialising in carbon-fibre products for athletic performance.[5] This acquisition indicates an expansion beyond traditional foot pain relief towards performance, mobility, and broader foot wellness.
Product portfolio
The brand’s portfolio is broadly divided into several categories relevant to consumers seeking foot comfort and care.
Insoles and inserts
This is the product category most strongly associated with Dr Scholl’s. Products are designed for everyday walking, standing for long periods, work, running, heel pain, arch support, shock absorption, fatigue reduction, general cushioning, and odour control. The company markets products such as Advanced Pain Relief Insoles, 24-Hour Energy Insoles, Walk Longer Insoles, and Work Insoles with Massaging Gel.[6]
Foot pain and comfort products
Dr Scholl’s develops products intended to address specific sources of discomfort, including heel pain, tired feet, pressure points, blisters, bunions, corns, and calluses. The philosophy focuses on addressing discomfort at the foot level rather than treating footwear solely as a fashion accessory.[7]
Foot skin treatments
A major part of the brand involves foot skin care, including treatments and tools for warts, corns, calluses, hard skin, dry skin, cracked feet, and blisters. The current portfolio includes products such as Freeze Away and various foot files.[8]
Odour and perspiration products
The brand sells products aimed at controlling foot odour, excessive wetness, sweat, and odour inside footwear, including sprays, powders, and odour-fighting insoles.
Foot care devices
The company has expanded into electronic and mechanical devices, such as the Pedi Perfect Electronic Foot File, designed for removing hard skin and improving the appearance and feel of the feet.
Technology and product philosophy
A defining characteristic of Dr Scholl’s is its presentation of foot care products as engineered solutions. The company emphasises biomechanics, cushioning, shock absorption, arch support, pressure distribution, energy return, fatigue reduction, and foot stability. For example, its Massaging Gel® technology is marketed as providing cushioning and shock absorption, while newer technologies are designed around energy return and support.[9]
Insoles serve as the modern expression of William Scholl’s original idea: the shoe provides the outer structure, while the insole modifies how the foot interacts with that structure. Depending on the product, an insole can alter cushioning, arch support, heel impact, pressure distribution, foot positioning, and comfort during prolonged standing.
Market positioning
Dr Scholl’s occupies a distinct position between performance footwear brands and professional podiatric care. It focuses on everyday foot health, comfort, and accessible technology. Its fundamental consumer promise is to make feet feel better to facilitate continued movement. The company explicitly frames its purpose around helping consumers move better, stay active, and address discomfort at its source.[10]
Unlike a specialist medical practice, Dr Scholl’s is primarily a consumer foot care and wellness brand. Its products are designed for common problems such as everyday discomfort, tired feet, odour, blisters, and general support during work or exercise. This accessibility is a key reason for the brand’s global recognition.
Footwear heritage
The broader Scholl heritage includes footwear designed around comfort and foot anatomy. Historically significant products include the Pescura sandal and other comfort-oriented footwear. Modern Scholl footwear continues to combine comfort technology with fashion-oriented designs.[17] While Dr Scholl’s is particularly prominent as a foot care and insole brand, Scholl maintains a strong footwear presence in various international markets. Product assortments and branding can vary by country, even though the brands now sit within the same corporate organisation.
Brand evolution
The history of Dr Scholl’s can be categorised into four eras:
- Medical innovation (1904–mid-20th century): Built around Scholl’s medical knowledge, inventions, and arch-support technology.
- Mass-market foot care (mid-20th century–1980s): Expansion into a household name with a wide range of consumer products.
- Multinational consumer-health ownership (1980s–2019): Ownership by large corporations including Schering-Plough, Merck, and Bayer, with international rights following a separate path.
- Independent global foot-care company (2019–present): Acquisition by Yellow Wood, creation of Scholl’s Wellness Company, and reunification of the global business in 2021. The company is now expanding towards a broader concept of foot health, wellness, and performance.[11]
Philanthropy
In 1947, William Scholl established the Dr Scholl Foundation, an independent charitable foundation funded from the success of his business. Scholl died in 1968, leaving most of his estate to the foundation. Since 1980, the foundation has contributed more than $312 million to various organisations. The foundation operates separately from the modern commercial Dr Scholl’s business.[4]
Global presence
The 2021 combination brought the Dr Scholl’s and Scholl businesses together across more than 50 countries, with particularly strong positions in markets across Europe, Australia, and the Americas.[12] In the Philippines and many other international markets, products are typically sold under the Scholl name, whereas in the United States and much of the Americas, the Dr Scholl’s name is used.
Competitive identity
The brand’s competitive identity is defined by six key factors:
- Heritage: Origins dating to 1904/1906 provide over a century of category history.
- Founder credibility: William Scholl combined medical education with practical shoemaking knowledge.
- Mass-market accessibility: Transformation of foot health into everyday consumer products.
- Association with insoles: Strong linkage to specialised in-shoe support.
- Broad product ecosystem: Expansion from arch supports into pain relief, skin care, odour control, footwear, and devices.
- Global brand reunification: The 2021 acquisition reunited the previously separated American and international businesses.[13]
