Founding
Kosas was created by Sheena Zadeh, a beauty entrepreneur with a background that combined science and art. Her interest in cosmetics began early: her mother worked behind the makeup counter for brands including Clarins and Clinique, exposing Zadeh to the beauty industry while she was growing up. Zadeh later studied biological sciences and developed an interest in art and color theory, experiences that would influence Kosas’s approach to formulation and shade development.2
Zadeh’s motivation came partly from frustration with conventional makeup. She felt that many beauty products were either uncomfortable on the skin, difficult to choose from, or focused too heavily on hiding imperfections. She wanted to create products that were simple to understand, comfortable to wear and genuinely beneficial to the skin.3
Kosas launched in 2015 with a deliberately small collection of four lipsticks. Rather than offering hundreds of shades, the original collection concentrated on carefully developed, wearable colors. The early products were produced and shipped from Zadeh’s kitchen table.2
Interestingly, Zadeh has said that she did not initially set out to build a “clean beauty” company. Instead, her emphasis was on finding ingredients that provided the performance and feel she wanted; the resulting formulations happened to fit within the emerging clean-beauty movement.2
Early growth
The brand initially focused heavily on color cosmetics, particularly lip products. It subsequently expanded into products such as blushes, highlighters and complexion products.
One of the early breakthrough products was Tinted Face Oil, which introduced a lightweight, skincare-like approach to complexion makeup. According to Forbes, development of the product took approximately two years because the format was relatively unusual for foundation at the time.2
Kosas expanded its retail presence during the late 2010s. It entered Goop’s retail ecosystem in 2018 and reached Sephora in 2019, helping transform the company from a small independent cosmetics label into a prominent prestige beauty brand.2
Name and philosophy
The name Kosas comes from the Sanskrit philosophical concept of the five koshas, or layers of the self. The concept treats a person as something more complex than their physical appearance.
This idea became closely connected to the company’s broader philosophy: beauty should not simply be about covering or changing the surface of the face. Instead, makeup can be part of a person’s overall expression and relationship with themselves.
This philosophy helps explain why Kosas frequently describes its products as makeup that works with the skin rather than simply sitting on top of it.
Brand philosophy
Kosas currently describes its philosophy with the phrase:
“100% Makeup. 100% Skincare.”
The company’s objective is to blur the traditional distinction between cosmetics and skincare. Its products are intended to provide the visual effects of makeup while incorporating ingredients and formulations associated with skincare.1
The brand emphasizes several principles:
- Skin improvement: Kosas says many of its formulas contain skincare ingredients at active levels and are clinically tested for their intended benefits.
- Comfort: Products are designed to feel lightweight, nourishing and comfortable.
- Ease of use: Kosas favors products that are relatively intuitive and difficult to “mess up.”
- Natural-looking enhancement: The aesthetic tends toward healthy, luminous and believable skin rather than heavily masked complexion makeup.
- Color with personality: Although the overall look can be described as natural, Kosas does not restrict itself to neutral makeup.
- Sensitive-skin consideration: The company says its formulas are dermatologist-tested and designed with different skin sensitivities in mind.1
Kosas refers to this approach as “Comfy Glam”—makeup that is noticeably polished and pigmented while retaining a comfortable, natural quality.1
“Clean beauty” positioning
Kosas is strongly associated with the clean beauty movement, although the company says it did not originally create the brand specifically to be a clean-beauty label.
The company says its formulation standards go beyond a simple prohibited-ingredient list. According to Kosas, it excludes more than 2,700 ingredients and follows European Union clean standards. Its stated exclusions include parabens, phthalates, sulfates, talc, formaldehyde, BHA/BHT, petrolatum, aluminum, synthetic fragrance and cyclic silicones.1
Importantly, “clean” does not mean that Kosas products are preservative-free. The company explicitly says it uses preservatives and antimicrobial stabilizers when necessary for product safety and shelf life. Its products undergo preservative-efficacy testing before being brought to market.1
Product categories
Kosas has expanded considerably beyond its original lipstick collection. Its current range includes:
Face
The face category is one of Kosas’s most important areas. Products include:
- Revealer Skin-Improving Foundation
- Revealer Concealer
- Revealer Extra Bright Color Corrector
- Cloud Set Setting + Smoothing Powder
- Cloud Set Loose Powder
- The Sun Show Bronzer
- Blush Is Life
- DreamBeam SPF 40
The brand’s complexion products are particularly representative of its skin-first philosophy, combining coverage, brightening, hydration and other skincare-oriented attributes.1
Eyes
Kosas also sells products for the eyes, including:
- Mascara
- Eyeliner
- Brow pencils
- Brow gels
- Brow and lash treatments
Its Air Brow line is particularly associated with the brand’s approach to low-effort, fuller-looking brows.1
Lips
The company’s roots are in lipstick, and lips remain an important category. Its current range includes:
- Lipsticks
- Lip oils
- Lip liners
- Lip balms
- Lip treatments
- Lip-plumping products
Examples include Wet Stick, Wet Lip Oil, LipFuel, Hotliner and Plump + Juicy.1
Cheeks
Kosas offers blushes, bronzers, highlighters and multi-use color products. The brand has increasingly embraced multifunctional products that can be applied across cheeks and lips. Its newer Impressionist Multistick, for example, is designed as a cream cheek-and-lip color.1
Skincare and body
Although historically a makeup company, Kosas has expanded further into skincare-adjacent and body products. Its current portfolio includes products such as:
- Mineral sunscreen
- Lip treatments
- Facial treatment products
- AHA-based deodorant
- Body wash
- Brow and lash treatments
This expansion reinforces the company’s central positioning of makeup and skincare as interconnected rather than separate categories.1
Revealer Concealer
Revealer Concealer is arguably Kosas’s best-known product and one of the products most strongly associated with the brand.
It is positioned as a creamy, brightening concealer with skincare-oriented ingredients including caffeine and hyaluronic acid. Kosas describes it as more than a conventional concealer because its purpose is not simply to cover imperfections but to help create a healthier-looking complexion.3
The product has become particularly important to Kosas’s reputation because it exemplifies the company’s core concept: high-performing makeup that behaves more like skincare.
Tinted Face Oil
The Tinted Face Oil was another major product in Kosas’s early development. Rather than behaving like a traditional heavy foundation, it was designed around an extremely lightweight, skin-like format.
It helped establish Kosas’s reputation for complexion products that prioritize a natural finish and comfortable wear.2
Cloud Set
Cloud Set is a baked setting and smoothing powder designed to set makeup while maintaining a soft, natural appearance rather than producing an overly dry or heavy finish. The current line includes both pressed and loose versions.1
Air Brow
Air Brow is Kosas’s brow line, including tinted and clear formulations. It reflects the company’s preference for easy, quick beauty routines rather than elaborate application techniques.1
DreamBeam
DreamBeam SPF 40 represents the brand’s movement further into skincare. It is a mineral sunscreen positioned around both sun protection and cosmetic wearability, reinforcing Kosas’s makeup-skincare crossover.1
Design and visual identity
Kosas’s visual identity is distinct from the minimalist beige-and-white aesthetic historically associated with some clean-beauty brands.
Its packaging and marketing tend to combine:
- Soft but saturated colors
- Rounded forms
- Playful typography
- Simple product names
- Close-up skin imagery
- Bright, contemporary campaign photography
The overall visual language communicates approachability rather than luxury formality.
This is important to the brand because Kosas attempts to make makeup feel less intimidating. Rather than presenting beauty as a technically complicated transformation, it presents makeup as something that can be incorporated easily into everyday life.
Target consumer
Kosas primarily appeals to consumers interested in modern, skin-focused makeup.
Its target audience can broadly be described as people who:
- Want makeup that looks relatively natural
- Care about skincare ingredients
- Prefer lightweight formulas
- Are interested in clean beauty
- Want relatively simple application
- Like a polished but not heavily made-up appearance
- Are willing to pay prestige-beauty prices for formulation and performance
The brand has also become strongly associated with younger beauty consumers and social-media-driven beauty culture. ELLE described Kosas as a prominent “It-girl” beauty brand, with products such as Revealer Concealer gaining significant attention on TikTok and among celebrities.4
Retail and distribution
Kosas began primarily as a direct-to-consumer business, selling products through its own website.
Its expansion into established beauty retailers was a major part of its growth. By 2019, the brand was available through Sephora, giving it access to a substantially larger prestige-beauty customer base.2
Today, Kosas maintains its own online store while also being sold through major beauty retail channels. Sephora’s current catalog lists dozens of Kosas products across makeup and skincare categories.5
Business growth
Kosas remained relatively small during its earliest years before expanding its product portfolio and retail footprint. The company’s growth accelerated substantially after entering major retail channels.
By the time of its 10th anniversary in 2025, Forbes reported that Kosas had developed into a global beauty business, with approximately 30% of annual revenue coming from international sales at that time. The company had expanded internationally, including into Australia and New Zealand.2
This marks a significant evolution from its origins as a four-lipstick startup being operated from its founder’s kitchen table.
Brand positioning
Kosas occupies an interesting position within the beauty market.
It is not quite traditional luxury cosmetics, because its communication is relatively accessible and its products are designed for everyday use.
It is also not simply a skincare company, because color, complexion and cosmetic performance remain central to its identity.
And although it is strongly associated with clean beauty, the brand’s messaging increasingly emphasizes clinical testing, formulation science and skin benefits rather than relying solely on “natural” or “clean” language.
A useful way to describe Kosas is:
A modern prestige beauty brand that combines makeup performance with skincare-oriented formulation and an effortless, skin-first aesthetic.
Competitive landscape
Kosas competes within a broader generation of beauty brands that have blurred the boundaries between makeup and skincare.
Its competitive environment includes brands such as:
- Glossier — minimalist, skin-focused and effortless beauty.
- ILIA — makeup with skincare-oriented formulations.
- Tower 28 — sensitive-skin-oriented and clean beauty positioning.
- Rare Beauty — accessible, contemporary makeup with strong social-media influence.
- Saie — lightweight, natural-looking and clean-positioned cosmetics.
Kosas differentiates itself particularly through its emphasis on skin improvement + makeup performance + comfortable wear.
Why Kosas became influential
Kosas’s importance in contemporary beauty comes from its role in helping normalize the idea that makeup doesn’t have to be separate from skincare.
Traditional cosmetics often emphasized coverage, pigmentation and transformation. Kosas instead helped popularize a model in which a foundation or concealer could simultaneously be marketed around hydration, brightening, barrier support or other skin benefits.
The brand also helped move the beauty conversation away from the binary of “makeup” versus “no makeup.” Its philosophy is closer to “good makeup, not no makeup”: enhance what is already there rather than completely conceal it.1
Founder: Sheena Zadeh
Sheena Zadeh is the founder and driving creative force behind Kosas.
Her combination of science and art is central to the brand’s identity. Her scientific background informs the company’s emphasis on formulation and testing, while her experience with painting and color theory influenced Kosas’s approach to shades. She has explained that some of the company’s earliest colors were inspired by work with color in portrait painting.2
Her personal frustration with the beauty market became the foundation for Kosas: she wanted fewer, better, easier-to-understand products rather than an overwhelming assortment of options.3
Current identity
As of 2026, Kosas can be characterized as a global, digitally influential prestige beauty brand centered on the intersection of makeup, skincare and comfort.
Its evolution can be summarized as:
2015: Four lipsticks →
Early growth: Color cosmetics →
Breakthrough: Tinted Face Oil and complexion products →
2018–2019: Major retail expansion →
2020s: Viral complexion, brow and setting products →
Today: Broad makeup + skincare + body portfolio with international expansion.2
The central idea, however, has remained remarkably consistent: makeup should enhance the person wearing it, feel good on the skin and ideally contribute something positive to the skin itself.
