Oculus was a pioneering American virtual-reality (VR) technology company and brand best known for developing the Oculus Rift, a headset that helped revive consumer interest in modern virtual reality. History
Origins
The story of Oculus begins with Palmer Luckey, an American electronics enthusiast and VR hobbyist. While still young, Luckey became fascinated by head-mounted displays and began collecting and experimenting with existing VR hardware.
He eventually designed his own VR headset prototype with the goal of producing something that offered better performance than contemporary VR systems while remaining affordable for gamers. Oculus VR was formally established in 2012, with Luckey joined by entrepreneurs and engineers including Brendan Iribe, Michael Antonov, Nate Mitchell, and Andrew Scott Reisse.
The company initially focused on the Oculus Rift, a PC-connected virtual-reality headset.
Kickstarter and the Oculus Rift
Oculus became widely known after launching a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 to fund development of the Rift development kit.
The campaign raised roughly US$2.4 million, attracting thousands of supporters and considerable attention from the gaming and technology industries.
One particularly important figure was John Carmack, the legendary game programmer associated with Doom and Quake. Carmack experimented with one of Luckey’s early prototypes and subsequently became involved with Oculus, helping demonstrate the potential of the technology to the wider gaming industry.
The Kickstarter was significant because VR had already experienced several failed attempts to become a mainstream consumer technology during the 1990s. Oculus demonstrated that modern displays, sensors, graphics processors and software could make VR considerably more convincing and affordable.
Facebook acquisition
On March 25, 2014, Facebook announced that it had agreed to acquire Oculus VR.
The announced transaction was valued at approximately US$2 billion, consisting of roughly $400 million in cash and $1.6 billion in Facebook stock, with additional potential consideration tied to milestones.
The acquisition was controversial among some members of the gaming community. Oculus had originated through crowdfunding, so some Kickstarter supporters were unhappy that the company was being sold to Facebook.
Facebook, however, viewed VR as something considerably larger than a gaming accessory. Its stated vision was to develop immersive technology for gaming, communication and new social experiences, eventually treating VR as a potential new computing platform.
The acquisition was completed in 2014, and Oculus continued developing its hardware as part of Facebook.
Major Oculus products
Oculus Rift
The Oculus Rift was the company’s flagship PC-based VR headset.
The first consumer version, commonly known as the Rift CV1, launched in March 2016. It represented one of the first major consumer VR headsets of the modern era.
The Rift required a relatively powerful gaming PC and used external hardware for tracking. It was primarily aimed at gamers and VR enthusiasts.

Announced in 2018 and released on May 21, 2019, Quest was an all-in-one headset offering six degrees of freedom (6DoF) tracking without requiring a PC or external tracking sensors. Its launch price was US$399.
This was a major technological and commercial shift. Instead of relying on a setup involving a PC, cables, and external sensors leading to a headset, Quest integrated the battery, processor, cameras, displays, and controllers into a single unit.
The headset used cameras mounted on the device to track the user’s surroundings and position, a technique commonly called inside-out tracking.
It also introduced a much more flexible model in which Quest could operate independently but later use Oculus Link to connect to a PC and access PC VR software.
This combination of convenience and capability became the foundation for the later Meta Quest platform.
Oculus Quest 2
The Oculus Quest 2 launched in October 2020.
It was lighter and more powerful than the original Quest and initially started at US$299, substantially reducing the entry price for standalone VR.
Quest 2 became particularly important because it moved VR away from being primarily an enthusiast product and toward a much larger consumer audience.

Why the Oculus name is still important
Even though Meta no longer uses Oculus as its primary consumer brand, “Oculus” remains one of the most recognizable names in VR history.
For many people, Oculus was effectively synonymous with the modern VR revival.
