About RMK
Overview
RMK (pronounced R-M-K) is a Japanese makeup and beauty brand established in 1997. It was created around the sensibility of makeup artist RUMIKO, who was active in New York, and was designed to bring a professional makeup-artist perspective together with Japanese beauty-product technology. The brand is particularly associated with natural-looking, luminous base makeup, while also offering color cosmetics, skincare, body care, and makeup tools.1

History
1997: The beginning
RMK launched in March 1997, opening its first counter at Seibu Department Store Ikebukuro in Tokyo. Its debut included two products that would become central to the brand’s identity: RMK Makeup Base and RMK Liquid Foundation.2
The concept was relatively distinctive for its time. Instead of treating foundation primarily as a way to conceal the face beneath a heavy layer of makeup, RMK emphasized a more transparent, natural and dimensional complexion. The brand says these products introduced a new approach to Japanese base makeup and attracted considerable support.3
This philosophy became one of RMK’s defining characteristics: makeup should enhance the person’s own appearance rather than obscure it.
1999–2005: International expansion
RMK began its international expansion in 1999, opening its first overseas counter in Taiwan, followed by Hong Kong later that year.4
During the following years, the brand expanded into:
- United Kingdom — 2003
- South Korea — 2003
- Thailand — 2005
- Singapore — 2008
RMK also expanded beyond makeup. In 2000 it introduced its “delicious skin care” line, inspired by the idea of using the natural power of food-derived ingredients in skincare.
In 2001, RMK opened its flagship store in Aoyama, Tokyo, establishing a physical presence in one of the city’s major fashion districts.5
Creative direction
One of the most important things about RMK is that it has historically been an artist-led cosmetics brand.
RUMIKO
The brand’s origins are closely associated with RUMIKO, a Japanese makeup artist who worked in New York. Her approach combined international fashion and makeup-artistry influences with Japanese product development. RMK was consequently one of the Japanese brands to strongly emphasize the idea of the makeup artist as the creative force behind a cosmetics line.6
The original RMK identity was built around:
- natural-looking skin
- professional makeup techniques made easy for consumers
- transparency and luminosity
- individuality rather than uniform beauty
- a combination of New York fashion sensibility and Japanese cosmetics technology
KAORI
In 2013, RUMIKO’s period as creative director came to an end, and KAORI subsequently became the next creative director. Her first collection for RMK appeared in 2014.7
YUKI
In May 2021, makeup artist YUKI, based in New York and active internationally, became RMK’s creative director.
YUKI’s role goes beyond individual products: RMK says she leads product development across collections and directs campaigns and other aspects of the brand’s creative expression. Her first RMK collection was ROSEWOOD DAYDREAM, released in 2021.8
The current RMK philosophy emphasizes a tension between opposites: sophistication and naturalness, timelessness and the present, delicacy and boldness, with the idea of discovering beauty that is still “unfinished.”9
Brand philosophy
RMK’s philosophy can broadly be described as “enhance rather than disguise.”
The brand has traditionally rejected the idea that makeup should make everyone look the same. Instead, its products are intended to reveal or emphasize the individual’s existing features.
Its Japanese corporate description characterizes RMK’s original proposition as healthy, sophisticated natural makeup, developed from contemporary New York beauty influences and RMK’s own ideas.10
This produces a recognizable RMK aesthetic:
Natural → translucent → polished → sophisticated → individual
Rather than an extremely dramatic or heavily concealed look, RMK tends to occupy the space between bare skin and fully made-up skin.
That is particularly evident in its foundations, which historically became the brand’s best-known category.
Product categories
Today RMK is much broader than a foundation brand.
1. Base makeup
Base makeup remains arguably RMK’s most important category.
The range includes:
- Makeup bases / primers
- Liquid foundations
- Cream foundations
- Concealers
- Face powders
- Other complexion products
The original RMK Liquid Foundation, introduced in 1997, established the brand’s reputation for lightweight-looking, luminous complexion makeup.11
Later milestones included:
- RMK Creamy Foundation — 2005
- RMK Gel Creamy Foundation — 2012
- RMK Creamy Foundation EX — 2019
- RMK Liquid Foundation Flawless Coverage — 202212
The 2022 Flawless Coverage foundation was positioned as a continuation of RMK’s longstanding philosophy: maintaining transparency, dimensionality and a natural-skin impression rather than simply maximizing coverage.13
2. Color makeup
RMK’s current color-makeup portfolio includes:
- Eyeshadow
- Eyeliner
- Eyebrow products
- Mascara
- Lip color
- Lip gloss
- Cheek products
- Nail color
This is where RMK’s seasonal collections allow the brand to become more experimental. The complexion philosophy may be understated, while eye, lip or cheek colors can introduce stronger fashion-oriented elements.
3. Skincare
RMK also has a substantial skincare business, including:
- Cleansers
- Face washes
- Pre-care products
- Lotions
- Essences
- Special-care products
- UV-care products
- Treatment products
Its best-known skincare concept is the W Treatment line.15
A notable product is the RMK W Treatment Oil, introduced in 2013. It combines a water-based moisturizing layer with an oil layer and became one of the brand’s skincare icons.16
4. Body care
RMK expanded into body care in 2015, and the current range includes body- and hand-care products.
5. Brushes and tools
Because of its makeup-artist origins, tools remain part of the brand’s identity. RMK sells makeup brushes, tips and other beauty tools alongside its cosmetics.17
Signature products and categories
If someone were trying to understand RMK through a handful of products, the most historically important would be:
RMK Liquid Foundation
This is arguably the product most responsible for RMK’s early identity.
It debuted with the brand in 1997 and represented the company’s approach to creating a fresh, transparent complexion. It helped establish RMK’s reputation for base makeup.
RMK Makeup Base
Also launched in 1997, the Makeup Base formed the other half of the original complexion system alongside Liquid Foundation.18
RMK Gel Creamy Foundation
Introduced in 2012, this product combined the transparency associated with gel textures with the coverage of a cream foundation.19
RMK W Treatment Oil
Introduced in 2013, this became one of RMK’s recognizable skincare products. Its two-layer formulation was designed to provide moisturizing benefits without the heavy feeling traditionally associated with facial oils.20
RMK Liquid Foundation Flawless Coverage
Introduced in 2022 as part of RMK’s 25th-anniversary period, this foundation represents the continuation of the brand’s complexion-focused heritage under YUKI.21
What makes RMK distinctive?
1. Makeup-artist heritage
Unlike a conventional mass-market cosmetics label, RMK was conceived from the beginning around the expertise and creative perspective of a professional makeup artist.
That heritage remains visible in the brand’s emphasis on application technique, texture and finish.
2. Base-makeup expertise
RMK’s strongest historical association is with complexion products. Its early Liquid Foundation and Makeup Base essentially established the brand.22
Consequently, RMK is particularly relevant to people interested in natural, luminous and sophisticated skin rather than extremely opaque foundation.
3. Japanese × New York aesthetics
The brand’s identity comes from an unusual combination:
Japanese cosmetics craftsmanship + New York makeup/fashion sensibility.
This was part of RMK’s original proposition and remains an important part of its historical identity.23
4. Professional results without complicated technique
RMK explicitly describes its products as allowing consumers to enjoy a professional-quality result without requiring complicated technique.
That makes the brand different from professional makeup brands whose products may be designed primarily for experienced artists.
RMK and the Japanese beauty market
RMK occupies an interesting position in Japanese cosmetics.
It is neither simply a mass-market drugstore brand nor an ultra-luxury skincare house. Instead, it has historically functioned as a prestige, department-store-oriented makeup brand, with a strong emphasis on artistry and product design.
Its sister brand SUQQU, also operated by e’quipe, occupies a different position, while RMK has remained particularly identified with makeup and complexion products.
The brand has also maintained international operations. e’quipe currently states that RMK is sold through more than 170 stores domestically and internationally.

Current identity
Under YUKI, RMK is not simply trying to preserve the aesthetic of its 1990s origins. The brand is using its original ideas—individuality, sophisticated natural makeup and artist-driven creativity—as a foundation for a more contemporary visual identity.
RMK currently describes its worldview in terms such as effortless sophistication, delicacy and boldness, sweetness, and discovering beauty in an unfinished, evolving state.
In other words, modern RMK can be understood as:
Japanese prestige makeup with New York fashion-artistry roots, centered on natural-looking skin and individual expression.
In one paragraph
RMK is a Japanese prestige cosmetics brand founded in 1997 through the vision of New York–active makeup artist RUMIKO. Beginning with its iconic Makeup Base and Liquid Foundation, RMK helped popularize a more transparent, natural and sophisticated approach to complexion makeup in Japan. Over time it expanded into color cosmetics, skincare, body care and tools, while developing an international presence across Asia and Europe. After creative directors including RUMIKO and KAORI, New York–based makeup artist YUKI became creative director in 2021 and currently leads the brand’s creative direction. Today, RMK remains particularly known for luminous, natural-looking base makeup, artist-inspired product development, and a Japanese-meets-New-York approach to beauty.
Note on similarly named entities
There is also a Philippine company called Rustan Marketing Corporation (RMK), which is unrelated to the Japanese cosmetics brand discussed above.
