About Spyder
Spyder is an American premium performance apparel brand best known for its technical ski and snow sports clothing. Founded in 1978 in Boulder, Colorado, the company has built a reputation for combining advanced fabric technologies, athletic performance, and modern design. Spyder is recognized worldwide for outfitting professional ski racers, Olympic athletes, and recreational skiers with high-performance outerwear and technical apparel. Today, the brand is owned by Authentic Brands Group and continues to operate through licensed partners while maintaining its focus on winter sports and outdoor performance. [1]
History
Spyder was founded by David L. Jacobs, a former member of the Canadian National Ski Team and Canadian Downhill Ski Champion. While supporting his sons’ ski racing careers, Jacobs noticed a lack of high-quality racing apparel available to competitive skiers. He began producing padded racing sweaters from his kitchen in Boulder under the company name David L. Jacobs, Incorporated. [2]
One of the company’s earliest products was a distinctive blue racing pant with yellow padded panels extending from the knees to the hips. Ski racers nicknamed them “spider pants” because the padding resembled spider legs. Jacobs adopted the name Spyder, intentionally spelling it with a “y” after the “Spyder” designation used on certain Porsche sports cars, creating a memorable brand identity. [3]
The business grew rapidly from a small mail-order operation into an internationally recognized ski apparel company. During the 1980s, Spyder expanded beyond race sweaters into insulated jackets, ski pants, speed suits, and technical outerwear designed for elite alpine competition. [4]
Innovation
Throughout its history, Spyder has emphasized technical innovation. The company pioneered several performance-oriented developments, including:
-
Advanced waterproof and breathable ski jackets
-
Stretch performance fabrics for alpine racing
-
Lightweight insulation systems
-
Aerodynamic racing apparel
One of Spyder’s most notable innovations was SpeedWyre, introduced in the mid-1990s. This technology used raised seams on racing suits to improve airflow and reduce aerodynamic drag. Laboratory testing suggested measurable performance gains, but the technology was later prohibited in international competition after governing bodies ruled it provided an unfair competitive advantage. [5]
Sponsorships and Competitive Skiing
Spyder has maintained strong relationships with professional skiing organizations for decades. It has served as the official apparel supplier for the U.S. Ski Team since 1989 and has also supplied uniforms and technical gear for the Canadian Alpine Ski Team and other national programs. These partnerships helped establish the brand’s reputation for elite-level performance and technical expertise. [6]
