SUSE states that it was founded in 1992 and describes itself as the world’s first provider of an enterprise Linux distribution.2
Origin of the Name
The company’s original name was S.u.S.E., an acronym derived from the German phrase Software und System-Entwicklung, which translates to “Software and Systems Development.” The company was established in 1992 by Roland Dyroff, Thomas Fehr, Burchard Steinbild, and Hubert Mantel. Initially, the firm focused on Unix and Linux-related software and services before developing its own Linux distribution.3

History
Early Years and Linux Distribution
SUSE was founded in Germany in 1992. During its formative years, it became closely associated with Linux distribution development. SUSE Linux 1.0 was released in 1994, and the company subsequently expanded throughout Europe and internationally. By 1997, SUSE had become the leading Linux distribution in Europe according to its own historical records, followed by expansion into North America and Asia-Pacific.5

Enterprise Linux and Partnerships
In 2000, SUSE introduced SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), marking a fundamental shift in positioning. In 2021, SUSE acquired NeuVector, a cloud-native and container security company.11 NeuVector provides security capabilities for Kubernetes and containers, including vulnerability scanning, runtime protection, network security, container firewall capabilities, compliance, and threat detection. SUSE subsequently incorporated NeuVector into its portfolio as SUSE Security.12 This acquisition complemented the Rancher platform, creating a logical progression where Rancher manages Kubernetes and NeuVector secures it.
IPO and Return to Private Ownership
SUSE went public in 2022.11 However, the public-company period was relatively short, and the company subsequently returned to private ownership. Throughout these ownership changes, SUSE has maintained increasing independence from its earlier Novell and Micro Focus heritage, concentrating on open-source enterprise infrastructure.
StackState and Observability
