About Torani
Torani is an American manufacturer of flavored syrups, sauces, beverage concentrates, and specialty drink ingredients used in coffee, tea, cocktails, sodas, desserts, and culinary applications. Founded in 1925 in San Francisco, California, the company is one of the world’s best-known syrup brands and is widely recognized for helping popularize the flavored latte in the specialty coffee industry. Today, Torani products are sold in cafés, restaurants, hotels, convenience stores, and retail markets across more than 40 countries. [1]
History
Torani was founded in 1925 by Italian immigrants Rinaldo Torre and Ezilda Torre after returning from Lucca, Italy with family recipes for handcrafted flavored syrups. They began producing syrups in San Francisco’s historic North Beach neighborhood, serving the growing Italian-American community.
The company’s first five flavors were:
-
Anisette
-
Grenadine
-
Lemon
-
Orgeat
-
Tamarindo
Originally, these syrups were mainly used to create traditional Italian sodas. [2]
Prohibition Era
When Prohibition ended in 1933, Torani expanded into producing cordials and liqueurs. After Rinaldo Torre’s death in 1938, Ezilda Torre continued running the company, becoming one of the first female rectifiers (licensed distilled spirits producers) in the United States. Her leadership helped the family business survive the Great Depression and World War II. [3]
The Birth of the Flavored Latte
One of Torani’s most significant contributions to the coffee industry occurred in 1982.
According to the company’s history, coffee industry veteran L.C. “Brandy” Brandenburg experimented with Torani Vanilla and Orange syrups while making espresso drinks. His recipe became one of the first flavored lattes, helping establish a beverage category that would later become common in coffee shops around the world.
As specialty coffee grew during the 1980s and 1990s, Torani shifted its primary focus from alcoholic beverages to coffee flavorings and expanded rapidly into cafés globally. [4]
Growth and Expansion
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Torani evolved from a regional syrup producer into an international beverage ingredient company.
Major milestones include:
-
Expansion into international markets in 1994.
-
Development of more than 150 flavor varieties.
-
Growing consumer use for home beverage preparation.
-
