History
Origins
Agf’s history predates the current company. Its origins can be traced to General Foods, Inc., which was established in Japan in 1954 as the Japanese subsidiary of the American General Foods Corporation. General Foods initially handled products such as Bireley’s beverage concentrates before expanding into coffee.[1]
In 1960, the Japanese General Foods operation began selling Maxwell instant coffee, helping contribute to the development of Japan’s postwar coffee-drinking culture. Other products, including Yuban instant coffee and coffee gift sets, followed during the 1960s.
Creation of Agf
On August 1, 1973, Ajinomoto Co., Inc. and the U.S. General Foods Corporation established Ajinomoto General Foods, Inc. (AGF) as a 50–50 joint venture. Ajinomoto became the general sales agent for Agf products in Japan.[1]
The new company expanded its coffee portfolio throughout the 1970s. MAXIM instant coffee was launched in 1975, followed by ground coffee and other products. The company also invested in freeze-drying technology and manufacturing infrastructure.
Development of Blendy
One of Agf’s most important brands became Blendy. The brand developed from instant coffee into a much broader range of products, including ground coffee, bottled coffee, chilled coffee, stick-format beverages, and other coffee products.
Agf introduced Blendy chilled coffee in cups in 1998, followed by bottled Blendy coffee with milk in 1999. The company subsequently expanded the brand into single-serve instant coffee, café au lait, flavoured beverages, and other formats.
Blendy eventually became one of Japan’s best-known coffee brands and remains central to Agf’s business.
Becoming part of the Ajinomoto Group
A major change occurred in 2015 when Ajinomoto acquired the remaining 50% of Agf’s shares from Mondelēz International, making Agf a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ajinomoto Group.[1]
The following year, Ajinomoto acquired the trademarks for Blendy, MAXIM, and other Agf-manufactured products from Jacobs Douwe Egberts for approximately ¥25.9 billion. This gave Ajinomoto greater control over the brands that had historically been licensed to Agf.
In 2017, the company’s name was changed from Ajinomoto General Foods, Inc. to Ajinomoto AGF, Inc.[1]
Major brands and products
Blendy
Blendy is arguably Agf’s flagship consumer brand. It covers a wide range of coffee and café-style beverages, including:
- Instant coffee
- Ground coffee
- Coffee sticks
- Café au lait
- Bottled and chilled coffee
- Flavoured coffee beverages
- Single-serve products
Agf describes Blendy as one of the most well-known coffee brands in Japan.
MAXIM
MAXIM is another major Agf coffee brand with roots going back to the company’s early years. The brand has been sold in multiple forms, including instant coffee, ground coffee, gift products, and cold-brew products.[1]
marim
marim is Agf’s creamer brand. It originated as a non-dairy powdered coffee creamer in 1974 and became part of Agf’s broader coffee-consumption ecosystem.
AGF Gift
Agf also operates a substantial coffee gift business, an area that has been part of the company’s product portfolio since the 1960s and expanded considerably after the establishment of Agf.[1]
Tea and other beverages
Although Agf is strongly identified with coffee, its business extends beyond coffee. The company has developed Japanese tea, café-style powdered beverages, fruit tea, hojicha beverages, and other drink products, including products sold in convenient single-serve stick formats.
Business strategy
Agf’s business has historically focused on making coffee and other beverages convenient and accessible in different consumption situations.
Its product development has progressed through several formats:
Instant coffee → ground coffee → bottled/chilled coffee → stick products → café-style and specialty beverages
The company says it uses consumer taste research and market data to develop products and marketing suited to changing consumer preferences.
A particularly important development was the growth of individually packaged stick beverages. Agf began expanding this category in the 2000s, offering coffee, café au lait, tea, and other powdered beverages in single-serving formats.[1]
Manufacturing and research
Agf has developed manufacturing facilities and research capabilities in Japan, including operations associated with Suzuka in Mie Prefecture and Kanto/Gunma.
The Suzuka operation has been particularly important to the company’s coffee production. Agf established freeze-drying equipment there in the 1970s and later expanded facilities for coffee and packaging.[1]
Research and development have also played a significant role in Agf’s history, particularly in coffee processing, product formats, and consumer taste.
Relationship with Ajinomoto
Today, Agf is an integral part of the Ajinomoto Group’s food and beverage business.
The relationship is historically unusual because Agf originated from a partnership between Ajinomoto and General Foods, rather than being founded independently by Ajinomoto. After decades as a joint venture, Ajinomoto eventually obtained full ownership in 2015.
Ajinomoto describes Agf as playing a central role in its beverage business, while Agf contributes coffee and beverage technology, product development, and manufacturing expertise to the wider group.
Corporate identity
Agf’s corporate philosophy has increasingly emphasised the idea of creating moments of comfort and mental well-being through beverages.
The company’s current Japanese corporate message centres on “ふぅ” (fū)—roughly conveying the relaxing feeling of taking a breath or sigh of relief. Agf says it aims to contribute to a society filled with such moments of comfort and to support mental well-being.
In 2025, Ajinomoto highlighted Agf’s approach of developing the “3Rs” of coffee and beverages: Relax, Reset, and Refresh, connecting its beverage business with the broader Ajinomoto Group purpose of contributing to human well-being.
Significance in Japan
Agf is significant to Japan’s modern coffee culture because it has participated in the market across several generations and helped popularise different ways of consuming coffee.
Its history spans:
- The introduction and expansion of instant coffee
- The development of Japanese household coffee consumption
- Ground and regular coffee
- Coffee gift culture
- Bottled and chilled coffee
- Single-serve stick beverages
- Café-style powdered drinks
- Tea and other non-coffee beverages
This makes Agf more than simply an instant-coffee company. It is a full-line beverage manufacturer whose roots are in coffee but whose portfolio has expanded into multiple beverage categories. Agf itself describes its business as having evolved through instant, regular, liquid, and individually packaged powder-stick coffee products.
