History
Caltex was established on June 30, 1936, as a 50–50 joint venture between the Standard Oil Company of California (Socal) and The Texas Company (Texaco). The company was originally named California Texas Oil Company Limited, from which the name “Caltex” was derived.
The partnership combined Socal’s access to crude oil with Texaco’s international marketing and distribution network, allowing the new company to expand rapidly across regions east of the Suez Canal. During its early decades, Caltex built refineries, fuel terminals, pipelines, and service stations throughout Asia, Australia, Africa, and the Middle East. [1]
Following the merger of Chevron and Texaco in 2001 to form ChevronTexaco (later renamed Chevron Corporation in 2005), the Caltex brand became part of Chevron’s global portfolio. Today, Chevron continues to use the Caltex name in markets where it has strong brand recognition. [1]
Brand Identity
The Caltex brand is recognized by its distinctive red star logo, a symbol associated with quality fuel and reliable service for decades. In 1996, the company introduced the modern Delta Star design, combining a red five-pointed star with a blue triangular “delta” element. This visual identity reflects innovation, energy, and forward movement. [1]
