History
1983: Foundation
Crown Tools traces its origins to 1983, when Chaosheng Xu established the Shanghu grinding wheel factory in Shanghu village, Yongkang County, Zhejiang. The initial operation was modest, employing approximately 10 workers to produce grinding wheels and cutting products. Early annual sales were reportedly around RMB 100,000 (approximately US$14,000 at the time), with finished goods transported to post offices for shipment via bicycle or motorcycle.
1992: Adoption of the CROWN name
In 1992, the company restructured and renamed itself Zhejiang Yongkang Jiamei Resin Grinding Wheel Co., Ltd., concurrently constructing its own workshop facilities. This period marked the emergence of CROWN as a recognisable brand in both domestic and overseas markets.
1994: Expansion into power tools
A significant turning point occurred in 1994 when the company expanded beyond grinding accessories into the manufacturing and sale of power tools. Crown Tools subsequently pursued international expansion, initially targeting markets in the Middle East, South America, Southeast Asia and the United States, before entering European and other global markets. During this expansion phase, the company obtained certifications including UL, GS, CE and EMC.
2000–2004: Transition to a branded entity
Around the turn of the millennium, CROWN established CROWN Power Tools Manufacture Co., Ltd. in Jinhua. The company became involved in OEM projects with international power tool manufacturers, beginning cooperation with Black & Decker and TTI in 2002.
In 2004, CROWN launched its own branded product business, initially selling rebranded products primarily in Southeast Asian markets. This marked a strategic transition from being solely a manufacturer to becoming a recognisable consumer and professional tool brand.
2005–2007: Diversification
During the mid-2000s, Crown Tools significantly expanded its manufacturing capabilities. A joint venture with Zhejiang Hengtai Machinery Co., Ltd. facilitated substantial growth in the garden equipment sector. The company also implemented ERP systems for products and spare parts while developing additional manufacturing and trading entities, broadening its portfolio beyond conventional power tools.
2010: Formation of Merit Link
In 2010, Merit Link Co., Ltd. was established in Shanghai to coordinate business strategy, branding, sales, marketing, logistics and supplier relations. Merit Link subsequently integrated CROWN, DWT and Tosan within its broader brand structure. Additionally, Merit Link International AG was established in Stabio, Switzerland, to oversee brand development, communication, design, marketing and international customer support.[1]
Consequently, Crown Tools is best understood today as a principal brand within the Merit Link group rather than an isolated manufacturer.
2016 onwards: The B3 generation
From 2016, Merit Link International began developing the European market using the CROWN B3 series. This range represented a deliberate shift towards premium, professional-oriented positioning, featuring redesigned industrial aesthetics, improved performance specifications and increased R&D investment intended to compete with established global power tool brands.

Garden equipment
Following its expansion in the 2000s, the portfolio includes equipment designed for landscaping, gardening and outdoor maintenance.
Welding equipment
Welding equipment constitutes another key category within the broader CROWN/Merit Link hardware offering.
Pneumatic and air tools
The brand offers air/pneumatic tools and related equipment, extending its catalogue beyond electrically powered devices.
B3 Series
The CROWN B3 range is central to the brand’s modern positioning. Described as a line developed around design, materials and technology, it specifically targets professional users by combining robustness, power, modern industrial design and usability.[1]
Strategically, the B3 range represents an effort to penetrate the professional and premium power tool segment, moving beyond competition based solely on cost.
Manufacturing
Published company figures describe a substantial manufacturing footprint in China. Crown Tools reports operating:
- 4 factories
- More than 105,000 m² of manufacturing facilities
- More than 1,500 employees
- Annual production exceeding 4 million power tools
- Annual production exceeding 9 million accessories
The company states that it directly manufactures more than 90% of its products, requiring outsourced suppliers to adhere to specific quality and labour protection standards. Production management is described as being based on the Toyota Production System (TPS). These metrics are company-reported figures rather than independently audited industry statistics.
Corporate structure and Merit Link
Crown Tools operates within a multi-brand strategy managed by Merit Link, which covers various segments of the hardware market through private-label brands and agency relationships.
According to corporate information, the group maintains major bases in:
- China: Manufacturing, purchasing, operations and APAC activities
- Switzerland: Brand management, product design, R&D, innovation and EMEA activities
International operations serve markets including Europe, the CIS, South America, the United States, China and Southeast Asia. Structurally, Crown Tools functions as a key component of the wider Merit Link international tools and hardware business.
International presence
Crown Tools states that its products are sold in more than 40 countries across all five continents. International expansion commenced in the 1990s with exports to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, South America and the United States, followed by broader entry into European markets. Since 2016, the company has placed particular emphasis on Europe in conjunction with the B3 professional range.

- Serious DIY/home-improvement users
Contemporary branding explicitly prioritises professional users, particularly through the B3 range.
Brand philosophy
Corporate materials identify several guiding principles:
- Innovation
- Trust
- Union
- Passion
- Care
The company also highlights customer needs, product quality, technology, health and safety, social responsibility and sustainability. The overarching brand message can be summarised as professional performance at an accessible price, though exact positioning varies by product line and market.[1]
Position in the power tool market
Crown Tools exemplifies a Chinese-origin manufacturer that has progressed through distinct developmental stages: from grinding wheel manufacturer to OEM provider, then to international tool manufacturer, branded power tool company, and finally to a professional/premium tool brand.
This trajectory distinguishes it from recently created consumer brands sourcing generic tools. With a manufacturing history dating to 1983, the company has progressively expanded its production, engineering, distribution and product development capabilities. Its primary differentiation lies in combining Chinese manufacturing scale, international OEM experience, professional product development and Merit Link’s global infrastructure.
Comparison with other brands
| Brand group | Typical market perception |
|---|---|
| Milwaukee / DeWalt / Makita / Bosch Professional | Major established professional-tool brands with extensive global ecosystems |
| Crown Tools | International Chinese-origin brand with professional-oriented products and growing premium positioning |
| Generic Chinese tool brands | Usually more price-oriented, with varying manufacturing and brand infrastructure |
| Local/regional tool brands | Often focused on particular countries or market segments |
The B3 programme is particularly relevant to Crown Tools’ efforts to compete at the higher end of this spectrum.
Reputation and quality
Crown Tools resists simple categorisation as either “cheap” or “premium”. The brand encompasses diverse product categories with varying quality and price points; professional B3 products are explicitly engineered for higher-tier competition.
The company emphasises professional users, durability, performance, materials, technology, R&D, international standards and after-sales support. However, individual tools should be evaluated model by model, as manufacturing scale does not guarantee uniform equivalence to specific products from brands such as Makita, Bosch Professional, DeWalt or Milwaukee.
Brand identity
Visual identity has evolved through several logo generations. “CROWN red” became prominent during the second-generation redesign, leading to the current iteration. The aesthetic generally combines red, black, white and industrial styling, providing a conventional professional appearance that distinguishes the brand from generic alternatives.
